The problem with salicylic acid is that it dries the skin, which increases oil production, and the problem with sunscreen is that it plugs the pores. Any alternatives?

There is another condition that looks a lot like sebaceous filaments, known as trichostasis spinulosa. It appears as tiny black dots on the nose, that, in reality, are irregular shedding of vellus hairs from the follicles, causing a collection of multiple hairs stuck together in one follicle. Not a lot of people talk about this condition, and I believe it needs more light shed on it. If your sebaceous filaments are BLACK and not AMBER/BROWN/WHITE and upon close inspection look like little hair-like projections, then, you may have trichostasis spinulosa! Dr. Dray made a great video about it & the treatment options differ A LOT from blackheads and sebaceous filaments❤

Oh my god thank you so much for this! I've been dealing with these black dots on my nose since my teens and I'm 23yo this year. I've been using exfoliating acids since 2020 on and off, but these black dots have always been persistent. Recently, I noticed that my nose has been clearer than before however those black dots are still there, and I noticed that I've been able to get rid of my sebaceous filaments which resulted in a clearer nose appearance, so those black dots are definitely not SE and they don't respond to acne treatments. Definitely gonna be buying pore strips and use them once a week now, cheers!

I’ve struggled with sebaceous filaments since early teens and it got really bad around 25. I developed dry skin and a ton of SFs, that I couldn’t even wear makeup. I tried a ton of products in the past 3 years, based on your videos, and finally this is the only combination that works for me: PM routine 1) The Inkey List - Oat Cleansing Balm 2) CeraVe - SA cleasner 3) The Ordinary - Glycolic acid toner 4) Purito - Dermide sleeping pack This alone does magic for my skin! When I change even a single step, my pores are all filled up and look horrible. AM routine is nothing fancy: 1) Water 2) Niacinamide cream (Right now Purito Deep Sea water) 3) Frudia SPF 50

Oh my goodness! @makeupbymonicaa (Monica Ravichandran) sung your praises in a video (9 mos ago) regarding your recommendation of the purple onion Korean sunscreen by Isntree. I am so glad I found your channel! About 3 months ago started taking better care of my 52 year old skin. I adopted a routine containing niacinamide serum, a vitamin c moisturizer (vit c ester) and a weekly treatment of glycolic and lactic acid. In theory they are wonderful, but I've never had so many clogged pores. I love this video bc you recommend a cleanser with SA or sulphur. I have been using one a few times a week but I think I need to use it every night. Will try! Can't wait to watch more of your videos! Thank you!

I don't wear makeup, but using a cleansing balm reduced my SFs so much! I do a single cleanse with a balm that's strong enough (contains enough emulsifier) to rinse off completely and leave no oily residue. I massage it thoroughly into my skin without water, especially over my nose and chin, and I start adding water with the massage a little at a time. After about a minute, I rinse. I make my own cleansing balm with cheap carrier oils, castor oil, emulsifying wax, and cetyl alcohol or stearic acid, plus a little kaolin clay for exfoliation that's so gentle you can't even feel it.

I use olive oil and mineral oil mixed together. Rub into your skin and wipe off gently with a very warm, wet washcloth, it works really, really well. Hold the washcloth on your face for a few seconds before you wipe off the oil. Also, do it right before you put your makep on, it cleans out the pores and moisterizes your skin. The best way to remove oil is with oil, not alcohol or by trying to dry it up. I'm telling you, do this once or twice a day for a whiile, it works!

I have a question about re-application of sunscreen. My skin is very quick to flare with acne if I am applying moisturising cream or sunscreen without washing it first. I don't think it is good for my skin or particularly realistic for me to wash my face multiple times throughout the day. Does this happen to other people who re-apply frequently enough? What can I do? I have considered that facial wipes might actually be a more realistic option if I find something gentle enough.

Buy the CeraVe SA (Salicylic Acid) cleanser. I had such a HUGE change in my skin! I used to be so embarrassed of my nose - until I used this cleanser. I've only been using it for 2 months and I'll never go without it again! Realistically, it won't make them all disappear - but you will be so happy with the result! Your skin will be so lovely and smooth. I cannot recommend this product enough!

So I have come to the conclusion that I may have sebaceous filaments but oddly located on my chest, like on the actual boob area. I feel like they started to be come apparent in my mid twenties and I have struggled in past with picking at my KP on my arms. Which I sporadically treat but no longer pick. However that has moved to my sebaceous filaments on my boobs. It's most definitely anxiety and adhd related picking and I have tried exfoliating them with various products. I have used hyaluronic acid on my chest to help heal the after effects of picking but tend to leave out body moisturizing. I know you recommended sulfur products but I am slightly worried about doing that as I has an allergy to sulfonamides. Also I am a plus woman who tends to sweat under the boobs almost as much as under the armpits. So any tips on how to treat my sebaceous filaments and the flareups I get from picking?

Yes! It doesn't matter how clear the rest of my face is, underneath my bottom lip in between my chin is always full of bumps and clogged pores. And right around my nostrils. It will look completely clear one day, then they all show up again a cpl days later if I sweat at.all or wear makeup. I can only wear tinted CC cream now bc seems like everything breaks me out these days.

Just washing with SA never did anything for me, either. Stuff needs to sit on the skin for 2 to 3 minutes at least. I'd recommend trying a mask with SA instead. The Ordinary has one, but I'm sure there are others, that work just as well. I leave it on my skin for up to 10 minutes and find it much more effective. And yeah. I used tretinoin for a little while a couple years back and that helped big time. Unfortunately it made my skin very sensitive and I couldn't tolerate chemical sunscreen anymore. So I reluctantly stopped using it.
