My biggest red flag is the one-person indie brands who try to demonize large cosmetic companies. These indies say: "the big mega-corporate capitalists are selling you toxic things that will ruin your skin - but we use only pure, natural things like lemon juice, and we avoid nasty preservatives." First, not all indie brands do this. I'm an amateur formulator myself ... I follow all the accepted practices of the large labs, and if I can't safely make something in my clean kitchen, I won't make it at all. Large companies can afford $$$$$ fully equipped labs and to pay PhD cosmetic chemists. They can afford to try out hundreds of formulae, and can afford to test them all. Large companies have access to ingredients and methods we can't do at home. [I can't buy or stabilize retinol.] Large companies are in business to increase their sales. If they ruin customers' skin, they will lose sales. It's in their best interests to make good products. That lemon juice I mentioned some indies use ... lemon juice is acidic enough to hurt skin, it has sugar and other things that encourage spoilage, and chemicals derived from lemon juice (citric acid) work much better.

What people don't understand, or don't want to believe, is that drugstore products and more expensive brands generally have the same major ingredients and similar formulas. When I say "major ingredients", I mean the first 4 to 6 ingredients on the ingredients list which are generally very mundane ingredients like water, glycerin, petrolatum (aka petroleum jelly, aka Vaseline), mineral oil, beeswax, etc. When you compare ingredients lists, you learn this. All you get with more expensive products is a dusting of ingredients with botanical names that sound impressive, fancy packaging, and a prestigious brand name.

Dr Vanita Rattan’s sunscreen brand “Inzincable” claims to leave no white cast (it’s a mineral sunscreen SPF 50, she claims it’s good esp for skin of color) and she has a video of her and some relatives “reapply” the sunscreen over makeup but they disappear into the bathroom, don’t film them reapplying it and come out saying they applied it over their make-up and they looked flawless. My last ex would make comments about my acne, not like "ew your skin is nasty" but he would just always mention it and say weird things as a "joke" that made me feel bad, even though I told him many times it made me uncomfortable and I didn't want him to. The relationship ended up being awful (for multiple reasons). My current partner has never made me feel that way, the only time we talk about it is when *I* bring it up. One pet hate of mine is going to a spa and having a facial, and it always goes the same way, them putting the hard sell on you and telling you how dehydrated your skin is. It’s also embarrassing when I have taken clients for a Spa Day and they feel obligated to buy something they were put under so much pressure (Inevitably form a really expensive line). Hi Cassandra, all sweeties, I'm almost 65 and never used skincare, only cold water on my face + I did never go in the sun because I have a bit of vitiligo (some spot when I have been in the sun (walking and no shadow!), I get white and brown spots, very annoying and this is why I never went into the sun as I could prevent it. I have combination skin BTW. I also had acne and ulcers, even with multiple heads, even now I can get them!! But since a couple of years I use skincare for that from the farmacy, like f.i.: 'ROC', 'LA ROCHE-POSAY', 'LOUIS WIDMER'(advice from dermatologist) but I never used or use anything for wrinkles or such. And people think I'm much younger than 64!! Almost no wrinkles and proud of that. Cold water is the best when you are young and have no skinproblems. Do you have skinproblems? Go to a professional, do not experiment on your own sweeties!! And listen to Cassandra!!!!! BTW: advice I've got from the dermatologist (for my skin because it can cause irritantion and yes, acne (on my skin!): make sure there is no perfume in the product you buy. And not all skins are the same, what is good for my skin is not allways good for your skin!!! Lots of love from an old rebel-Pinkie

One of my red flags: when a product claims to do too many things. I'm sure they're area lot of good products out there with multiple active ingredients that can address more than one condition, but I'm not believing that a small $10 tube of something is going to fix every problem under the sun and then some!

Skincare red flags 🚩 🚩 1. Changes in lighting in before and after photos 2. Identical before and after pics (to spot if they’re the same look at the eyelashes, eyebrows, hairs on the skin, etc) > it means it was photoshopped if theyre the same 3. Preservative free products > they will grow mold 4. No expiration date 5. The ingredients dont match what the product claims. Tip for knowing if ingredients are genuine in a beauty product: look for the INCI list 6. ‘Chemical free’ products (everything is made of chemicals which means they have no idea what they were doing and not real scientists) 7. ‘Tried and tested’ products. Look for tested AND APPROVED 8. When brands attack/blame customers online 9. No negative reviews on the product 10. Pop ups like ‘5 people just put this in their carts’ > its preprogrammed for when u click on it 11. Expensive ass shit that could be found on aliexpress/alibaba/shein/temu > they got it from these stores and are drop shipping 12. Green washing

Expression is such a game changer in a photo since it hits on a psychological level, not just the physical.

I met this person for the first time, talked with him for like 20 minutes. He started giving me dieting advice! I had just shrunk 14 sizes in 9 months, and this jerk is giving me dieting advice! I'm an honest to G-d medium. And he's calling me fat‽ As for how I shrunk, I was large because I had a grumbling appendix. If dieting or exercise does not work for, go to your doctor. If you can't afford too, or your doctor is criminally negligent. Get something Iodized, like potassium per Iodine, Do Not Use More Than The Recommended Dose. If that works, you have a thyroid issue. My appendix problem (technically a thyroid issue) was solved with antibiotics for a rooster attack, so I avoided surgery, Yay. Also physical therapy for my injured back, caused by the appendix problem.

A red flag for me is the type of marketing they do for a product. Do they make fun of people or a hurtful situation, or recreate it in demeaning ways? Or is their advertising very cheap, poorly done, or in bad taste? I'm also apprehensive when companies push products on people too hard, or make completely unrealistic claims.

I don't look at the coding, but any time it has a timer of how much longer a "sale" lasts--not like like 3-day Labor Day weekend sale but an actual clock counting down the seconds--or showing "someone in Ohio just purchased," I immediately refuse to buy from that seller on principle alone. Even if the product was actually fine, that's a skeevy practice that I don't want to support and also associate it with particularly low quality crap. Sometimes "only X left!/low stock" is one of them, but that can also appear legitimately, so that one alone is less of a red flag. Lots of major companies use that one, and products do go out of stock, though often only temporarily.
