HOW To Fly a Bush Plane Into a STEEP Runway
Enjoy the views and shoots from some of the most beautiful places in West Papua.
The runway we're landing on is called Sipogol and it's located along a ridgeline. Landing at late mornings are usually not possible due to dangerous up valley winds and crosswinds. Its steep section allows for the plane to slow down quickly and a lot of power is needed to reach the top. Enjoy the stunning views!! Air America style!
Big thanks to Hartley and Patrick for allowing me to record the formation shots and John Knox for helping me out with the cameras.

Pure flying visuals, no theatrics. As a pilot, I can feel myself in his seat. Thanks.
The skill to land safely and depart from that location is nothing less than highest level !

Back in 1978, Republic of Vietman, I was a flight engineer on a HH43B Kaman Huskie (rescue and recovery chopper) I was at that time stationed at Cham Ran Bay- My last mission I was a part of was one of these Pilatus PT6, they took off out Nha Trang just north of us and their engine fuel starved. They ditched in the South China Sea, just off the Beach at Cham Ran Bay. Two men lived to try it again...The next day I returned to my wife in the states. Wilber

It's my all-time favorite aircraft, spent 500hrs in them.. Always heard the legends of pilots bailing out, then later finding the plane landed fine in a field, unpiloted, cool if true (easy to believe)!.. THANKYOU for your service 🤙

I did some flying out of Port Moresby and Goroka while living in PNG. On the advice of an Air Niugini Captain, I opted for a PNG Student Licence (I had an Unrestricted Licence with Aerobatic endorsement, with a fair few hours behind me - best advice I ever had). The country is beautiful, the flying experience absolutely stunning and I was (still am); in absolute awe of the pilots that fly there regularly. This video reminds me of many of the “cleared patches of jungle” I flew into under “instruction” from am experienced bush pilot - one had a red traffic cone halfway down the slope - if you could just see the cone through the mist, you could “safely” take off and climb out to the right once you “fell over” the sheer cliff drop off at the end of the dirt. These pilots have my absolute admiration for their skills and guts to fly there daily - one experience sticks in my mind as a reminder of how dangerous / fatal any loss of concentration could be - flying back to Moresby from the Highlands, just above solid cloud cover, we passed a few hundred feet away from a single tree sticking out of the clouds - the mountains either side of the (unseen, cloud covered) valley we were following were not very far away or below us - navigation error or engine failure was NOT an option.
Mannn that’s beautiful
This is really one of if not my favourite Pilatus Porter videos that ive seen on youtube. Truly fantastic on many different levels. Great work.
Stunning scenery and really skilled mountain flying Some of the best memories and satisfaction you'll have in your career. I've flown C130's into mountain strips in PNG, so have some inkling as to the challenges. Operating the Porter - on the edge - is both mesmerising and captivating. Aviation as an Artform. Serious stuff. I do have to profess though, in the opening frames of formation flying, I was on the edge of my seat. I do not wish to be negative, I only wish you well. But: Please, please strive not get below Lead , even when flying as loose as this appears. -------- Lead sees the ridge line, You see the Lead,,,,,,,, and the Ridge? well, that Ridge/ Tree is lookin' right at You. Stay high! Great operation though, keep it coming and keep on enjoying it!

Thank you for your comments Bob. Really appreciated! And thanks for sharing some of your flying. I can imagine it must have been amazing to fly a C130 in PNG. I don't have much formation flying and I take your feedback seriously. Like you said, it was loose flying and we rarely have an opportunity to do formation. Clearing ridges is to be taken seriously and I value your opinion. More videos will come soon! Hope to hear from you on other videos! Keep well!
Too great video. Love from Vietnam!
