The WORST Site I’ve EVER Seen for a RUNWAY! (See It For Yourself!)
By watching this video you're embarking on a journey through the jungles of West Papua. The video combines the construction of the runway in Tomosiga village along with the Pilots perspective while flying, taking off, and landing. This village is one of the most REMOTE places a plane can land on in the WORLD. It is located around 80 NM to the East of Nabire and on the Northern side of the first foothills of the mountain range that runs East West along the island of Papua.
I have to thank John Cutts for sharing his great work with the remote communities of West Papua and allowing me to use his footage to make this video possible. I am a witness of his unquestionable passion for his mission at hand.

Great video👍🏿 Excellent flying skills, this is precision landing at it’s best! Pilatus Porter, best STOL aircraft ever. Greetings from a former flight test engineer at Pilatus😎 Always happy landings!

Hey Pedro! Thank you for the message! I couldn't agree with you more! I followed you on LinkedIn. Would love to connect with you! Keep well and cheers!
The Pilatus Porter ! One of the best airplaines ever built ! I live just a few miles away from the Pilatus factory in Stans/Switzerland. What a tragedy, after 63 years of production of this epic planes, the last produced Porter crashed in sea at Crete in December 2022. It was on the way to Indonesia... Your videos are fantastic ! Greetings from Switzerland.

Hey! Thanks so much for your comment! I totally agree with you. The best STOL ever built. She's an amazing airplane. You're lucky you live so close to the factory. Yes, I know about the unfortunate event with the last Porter... Very tragic. Cheers from Papua!

My first experience with Porter was in the Ross River & Norman Wells areas in 1977. Fascinating machine then, still is.
Thank you for taking care of my brothers and sisters there ❤
Respect. This airstrip requires a lot of precision.

Thank you! Not many ppl realise that. One needs to land precisely on that first section of the runway, otherwise the plane will float down the runway into the narrow section. Keep well!

Actually some indigenous people want to free themself from the Republic, and took pilot hostage as their way to attract attention from the authority, the pilot is part of local airliner who helps the villagers in so many ways.

Would be interesting to know the pilots background and training. This little plane has tremendous lift capabilities. Takes only about 10 seconds to get the wheels off the ground !

It's very beautiful and always enthusiastic to watch your videos of planes flying and landing. I like the way you fit the music into the videos; it's superb. However, I have one issue. Please extend the video to focus on the people of the mountains, their lifestyle, their houses, and their culture. Show a bit more elaboration.

Good landing! And cool vids in general! Can I ask a technical question about the Porter? Does it always need to be in a high idle condition when landing? This is what the POH says. I am flying this beauty in the sim and I cannot scrub energy when light with little wind in high idle. If I put it into medium to low idle all is well.
@APilotsHome
Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Great question. We select low idle only after we touchdown. We want that engine on high idle in case of a go around, for example. Or if rapid acceleration is needed. You don't want to wait long for the engine to spool up in those situations. there's also no medium idle. There's only high or low idle. With the function of beta one should be able to bleed off that extra speed no probs. My guess it's a SIM defect 😂

Could you tell on what band they communicate on HF? I am an amateur radio operator and would love to hear them on air. Also curious to know if you communicate with them on HF from air to land?

There are possibly 10 or more frequencies used depending on the region and time of day. I don't know them by heart. I have them saved on my HF radio in the plane. I talk to them everyday to get weather reports and other safety related chats. Thanks so much for you comment!

i wonder if it would be possible to airlift a small bulldozer or even a mid size tractor with ripping blade and box scraper to build these runways ?
@APilotsHome
5 күн бұрын
The only way to get a bulldozer is to fly it in with a chopper. Too expensive for these villages to afford and extremely heavy. You’d need a big helicopter.
the separatist movement there is more worrying than the terrain itself. just last month a NZ pilot was taken hostage.
