How To Flush And Bleed Power Steering Fluid System

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to flush and bleed power steering fluid is explained by Landan with LMR.
These steps can be applied to other vehicles as long as you find the correct hoses. Like any other fluid in a car, the power steering fluid will break down and damage the power steering pump, hose, rack and pinion, and seals over time. Warn out fluid is dark in color and smells burnt. This is a good indicator that you need to flush your power steering fluid. It's important to reference the owner's manual for the proper change interval for power steering fluid and the appropriate fluid for your vehicle.

Don’t forget to pump the brakes on 1994-2004 V8s, they use a Hydro-Boost system for the brakes.

Saw some fluid coming from my dust boot on the steering rack. It looks pretty black and in much need of a flush. Really hoping I don't need a new steering rack.

I did the same overhaul as you on my 93 fox. Your videos and parts were a lot of help! My question is if EVERYTHING is new... can I leave the new hoses attached at the bottom and just start by filling the reservoir?

Thank you for your business and the great feedback. Your question needs more context? At what point are you referring to in the flush/bleed process? -Landan

@latemodelrestoration so I have installed a new rack, solid steering shaft, pump, lines, added filter, and new cooler tube. Everything is good to go, except there is no fluid in the system. My dad suggested that since everything is new to just fill it as it runs and not worry too much since it's a self bleeding system. Your input? Landan, I hope you're enjoying the new Mustang!

tim - Based on the other comment that I sent you on another video, drain the Type F fluid and run Mercon V. You can also add some Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier to the system to help quieten down the pump. -Landan

Update: Replaced the cardone reman. pump with oem new pump and replaced type f fluid with mercon v. Much better. No idle growl. Little whine when I turn but not bad. How much friction modifier should I use? Entire bottle or just a little? Thanks.

@@timsimons8946 That's good to hear! Thanks for the update. I just use the entire 4oz bottle. First, I remove 4oz of fluid with a turkey baster or syringe and then pour the friction modifier into the reservoir. -Landan

I’m getting a pretty nasty wheel/steering shudder and noisy pump when turning at slow speeds/idle. new rack, pump, lines, etc could it be because I used type f atf instead of mercon V? It goes away if I increase idle dramatically or if wheels are off the ground

Drain the fluid and fill it with Mercon V and see what happens. If the issue still exists, you can add a bottle of friction modifier to the system. This is an old trick of the trade. Just make sure you remove some fluid first before adding the friction modifer. You don't want to overfill the system. -Landan
