    rotate the steering wheel in both directions as you push the control for the 4x4. make sure the clutch is pressed down.

    you can also turn the steering wheel as you move the lever if the loader is not installed. I prefer using the loader method shown here.

    Awesomeness, I needed this information this past weekend. Thought I was in 4wd till I started spinning and couldn't back up a steep hill with a heavy load. I was a little frightened. Tore up a cedar tree, but finally got it in 4wd, and the 450lb pot in one piece. Thank you for this. You saved me from myself next time. Just not in time for the tree. I'll practice this method before I need It

    Thanks Jon, this is a video I have been planning on for quite a while. its a common issue with these tractors. also I likely should have mentioned in the video that driving on hard surfaces like dry pavement or concrete can cause your front differential to lock up with you rear and the tractor come to a sudden stop throwing the driver into the steering wheel or over the hood. this has happened before. be careful, where your seat belt! I may add a video about this subject as well.

    thanks for stopping by sometimes rotating the steering wheel side to side while pulling up on the lever will also be enough movement to get it to drop into front wheel assist. comes in handy for when the loader is not on the tractor or its so much mud the loader wont lift the tractor front end.

    awesome glad to hear it helps. yes it is a variance between tractor models due mainly to the size and type of tires in relation between front and rear. some models shift smooth with new tires and proper inflation once tire wear or inflation of the tires gets low or to high this will affect the engagement of the front wheel assist. I like to stay in two wheel drive most of the time. I only use front wheel assist when needed in snow or muddy soft ground. thanks for the kind words and for stopping by the channel.

    Thank you very much. Just bought a new tractor and I couldnt figure it out, I thought I was doing something wrong! If it binds up that easy makes me wonder why the dealer couldn't be bothered to humor me and put r1s on the back and r4s on the front. I can't complain about the r4s tho,I think ill run out of hp first with the loader and backhoe. Best of wishes and thanks again.

  • @daveknowshow

    @daveknowshow

    3 жыл бұрын

    yeah the difference in diameter between the R4 and the R1 would create a massive difference in gear ratio from front to back. this situation has caused tractor front differentials to explode into pieces, lock up and send people flying over the steering wheel. the dealers get instructed never to mix the two tires but they dont explain why so the dealer simply dont know why. but this is why they would not do that. you may could locate a set of r4 and r1 that would more closely compliment each other and if you only operated on loose dirt you may be fine. the minute you hit hard surface you would be puttint the machine under extreme stress. hope that helps take some of the mystery out.

    I have a century c-47 four-wheel drive I was wondering if you have any videos on adjusting PTO clutch it's hard to get mine in and out when I'm running the brush Hog .

  • @daveknowshow

    @daveknowshow

    5 жыл бұрын

    no I sure don't. I'm not familiar with the century c-47 however some tractors have two stage clutches. one engages the pto and the other engages the transmission. both are controlled by one clutch pedal. the linkage is where you typically adjust them. the linkage adjustment on some tractors is located under the tractor where it connects to the clutch pedal. additionally a problem that does occur quite often is the clutch will rust together and be stuck engaged. no matter how much you press in the pedal one or both clutches will not disengage. sometimes you have to break the tractor down in half to free up the clutch. this is why on new tractors they install a clutch pedal locking pin. it holds the pedal down to keep the clutch and pressure plate separated so it would not rust together. I hope this gives you some direction to look for a solution. a shop manual for that make and model would be a worthy investment. I would suggest googling it and see what comes up. you may be surprised. according to tractor data dot com that tractor does have a two stage clutch. www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/002/9/9/2995-century-c47.html

    with no front end loader you can put the tractor in neutral, hold in the clutch, pull up on the four wheel drive lever if it dont go in slightly turn the steering wheel right and left. this will cause a slight rotation of the front wheels and it should slip right into four wheel drive. the wheels only need to rotate just enough.

    so I will assume this is an HST drive tractor? if so it sounds like the supply hose for the main pump has a leak and the pump is sucking air. you need this fixed ASAP or it will burn up the pump if it has not already damaged the pump. this will cause cavitation in the pump and lack of pump pressure and flow resulting in poor hydraulic steering and poor HST performance. on my tractor that hose can easily be seen on the right side. not sure about yours. the HST style hose may be part number T1150-33340 found on messick's website. it is the rubber hose that goes to the hydraulic pump on the right side "passenger side USA" of the tractor. looking straight in at the brake pedal its located just in front of the brake pedal on the engine. if that hose gets a microscopic leak it will cause issues. you will not likely see fluid leaking. you could also have a collapsed hydraulic filter causing a restriction. additionally you could have a pressure relief valve that is stuck partially open. the hose is my first guess. check messick website for parts diagram under your tractor model number. here www.messicks.com/ku/85416?sectionId=220307&diagramId=371226

    Dave, I have a L3901HST with same mechanical engage lever. I can pull the lever just fine, but I never see the front wheels spin when I get stuck with the rear wheels spinning. It’s nearly brand new with 80hrs. I’m also new to tractors. But it seems like when I pull the lever for front wheel assist, I should notice that I have more traction, and I should see the front wheels spin. Any help or advice would be more than appreciated. Winter is coming and I won’t make it a week without 4x4 for snow plowing.

  • @daveknowshow

    @daveknowshow

    4 жыл бұрын

    yes you are correct you should see a marked improvement in traction with front wheel assist. you should also see at least one of the front wheels spin when traction is lost and a back wheel is spinning. you can test this by putting it in front wheel assist 4x4 and set the front end loader against the base of a tree. set the gear to low gear and drive forward slowly into the base of the tree. allow the front end loader to slightly lift the front end and when the rear tire spins you should see one of the front tires spins as well. if this is not happening contact your dealer ASAP! there could be parts floating inside the tranny and that is not a good thing. best of luck and keep us updated on what you find out.

I set the bucket down and lifted the front wheels up and then pulled the 4x4 handle. This time the handle moved significantly higher into position and I saw the front tires moving. Not sure that I want to kick you in the head Dave. What would you say if I just told you that I liked your video and I learned something very useful from it? Love to watch your videos. Very informative. I have been around tractors my whole life ( I am 62) and I now have my first front wheel assist tractor. A new Kubota L2501 gear drive. One quick question. I have found myself driving down the hard surfaced road after I have been working in the woods with the 4wd still engaged. Although this may not do any real harm to the tractor, it does cause wear on the front tires. Do you know of anyone who has put a warning light system for their 4wd being engaged such as Paul Short and Mech Uno have for their parking brakes? Gary Fox, Iowa

  • @daveknowshow

    @daveknowshow

    5 жыл бұрын

    so far no, as it would be on all the time and you would likely simply get use to it and not give it a thought. instead of adding a light to indicate my ebrake was on as Mech Uno did I used a back up beeper. it works very well for the ebrake and is much easier to acknowledge than a light on the dash which can be hard to see in bright sun light. the video is here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fq6uprN_mLa2qZc.html also a word of warning on these front wheel assist tractors. as pointed out in this video the gear ratio is not exact and more so after tire wear. a very bad situation has occurred with these tractors when driving on hard pavement or concrete at higher speeds while front wheel assist is engaged. the gear train can lock up and the tractor comes to an abrupt stop sending you over the hood if your not wearing a seat belt or even damaging the tractors internal gear drive. so it is extremely important to never drive on hard pavement with front wheel assist engaged. I have used it while plowing snow on the road but I typically drive slow when plowing snow depending on the type of snow. I'm always here to answer any question " if I know the answers ". hope this helps.

    I know exactly how I feel abut electronic actuation, I think its horrible. This applies to trucks as well as tractors as far as I'm concerned. On my wifes truck, there is a rotary knob on the dash to engage 4X4, if that goes, there is nothing you can physically do outside of the T-case to make it function if its jammed up for some reason. I'll take a lever any day of the week. When I was in the Army, I had a deuce lock up on me, it was manual steering, and while backing up and turning, it got into something that can only be described as wheel whip. The steering wheel is forced by the front end to try correcting the mismatch. You really had to watch your thumbs..... No idea why the trucks were in 6wd all the time, they were basically pavement dwellers.

    that's makes perfect sense as turning the steering wheel will also slightly rotate the front tire. however after some tire wear you may find that does not quite rotate the tire enough to line the gears. I could be wrong and it may be just enough since it don't really take much movement. in fact you can gently move forward or backward just ever so slightly and it will likely align it just enough to achieve the same results.

    Hope it works for you. If not you may have bigger issues that need to be addressed.

    If the front tires are straight it should go in and out of 4 wheel drive.

    no bucket, no problem. slip the tranny into neutral first. let the tractor roll just a tad, apply brake and it should slip into or out of four wheel drive. if it dont then while the clutch is pressed in and the transmission is in neutral apply the four wheel drive handle while releasing the brake just enough to slightly roll. most of the time it only takes a little bit. hope this helps.
