How To Fix Xbox One Black Screen of Doom 2021

Did you turn on your Xbox One and it suddenly had a black screen? So did I. I'll show you a couple of troubleshooting techniques that will help you get back online as well as my theory on what went wrong.

I have posted most of the FAQs on my blog post with the same title. Here are some others that I have come across.
🤔 If I have any peripheral devices (i.e. hard drives, USB port extensions) should I disconnect them?
I would recommend that you disconnect them as they may interfere with placing the console in safe mode.
🤔 Will I lose my game saves?
Every situation is different. Per Xbox Support site, game saves are uploaded to the cloud automatically when connected to the XBox Network. Game saves that are locally saved, may not persist when using the refresh or reformat method. See Official Xbox Statement on Cloud Saves and Offline Saves: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/g...
🤔 What do I do if my Sync or Eject Button is Broken?
If either your Sync/Bind or Eject Button are not working, it may be advisable to take your XBOX to an authorized technician or use the Offline System Update option.
🤔 How do I enter safe mode with an All Digital Xbox?
To enter safe mode/troubleshooting mode with an all digital Xbox, press and hold the XBOX button to completely shutdown the XBOX (do not put it in sleep mode). While holding the Sync button, Press (don't hold) the power on button.

    @@yosof4515 according to MS post (in the FAQs), game saves should persists as long as you played them while signed into XBL.

    Lol definitely not a good look. But sometimes firmware is faulty on the first go. Just glad it worked out cause we not ready for the next gen, right? 😂😂

    Yes- thanx Sage - only "problem" we had after getting reset menu we had to resynch the controller and the blue tooth

    @@SageTheProfessor many thanks for this info Sage. Really appreciate it. Before I go ahead with this though, can I just ask the obvious here? Saved game data is only removed locally, right? So whatever it has saved in the cloud (being an XBL / Ultimate Game Pass member) should be instantly retrievable, correct? Really hope you can answer this one as my console has been off and unplugged for the best part of a week now and I’m jonesin’ to get stuck back in with my Assassin’s Creed Odyssey game so bad.     This worked like a charm, sir. I went insane trying to figure this out. Got a refresh and back up and running. A pain but better than buying a new machine! Also, judging by the timing of this video and the comments a _lot_ of people are having this issue over the past couple of weeks. Mine started 22nd of July roughly. Not part of the insider program. I think an update must have bonked the system? Oh well, the fix worked. 😄

    Yo I second this. Haven't been on in a week and this happened so I was freaking out. I have had my xbox one for 6 years never once and issue believe it or not. I did the keep games and apps method and so far it has worked thanks! I hate that I had to reset everything but shit happens.

    You are a life saver, I have a hard drive and everything in the cloud because you know poopoo onboard storage, 160+ games. As soon as I signed in everything worked perfectly. Although I’m making this just in case someone was in the same situation as me. If your face place is messed up in any way, like your power button for instance unplug your power brick(original Xbox one) and as soon as the light comes one do the disc tray and sync and it will work the same.

    Thanks Sage. So almost 1 month after your initial issue, I got mine and followed very similar troubleshooting steps as you did, and suspected it was due to an update push. Anyway, followed your steps and it appears to have done the job.

    Thank you so much friend! I was watching youtube videos on my xbox just yesterday, noticed one video was playing at low res, changed resolution within the youtube video settings, finished up the video at 1080p just fine and gracefully closed the app and logged off the xbox. Roughly a half hour later I got the black screen of death just like you showed. Tried eject and power on and that didn't work. Tried new HDMI cable, still same results. Only until I tried the reset you mention did I recover. Again, like you said only had to log back into the xbox and apps. Can't thank you enough for sharing!

    I haven't been on my xbox for a few days, turned it on to this black screen, changed my HDMI lead then came to KZread. The fix worked great. Thank you, you have saved many of us a lot more stress and rage haha 😁👍

    I haven't used my xbox in about 2 months because this happened. I thought maybe the HDMI port went for a crap in the TV or xbox, so I bought a new cable and still nothing. I ended up just switching to my PC and watching shows off that. You saved my first gen xbox one! I followed your steps exactly and everything is working. Thanks man! You're frickin awesome! 👊

    Thank you very much! I just got this screen on Sunday for the first time after turning the Xbox on in the morning. The fixes Microsoft suggested didn’t work but putting it into safe mode and doing the “keep everything” option worked and everything is still there. Thanks again!

    THANK YOU! Other "solutions" said to go into Settings...which I *could not do* with the BSOD and no controller input (other than buzz for shut down options). After 45 "hard reboots" and signing out of everything Microsoft-related, this was exactly what I needed. (Hell, I didn't even know about the BT button!) I wiped it clean and started over; not a problem since I stink at video games (a little better w/keyboard). Basically I'm reduced to using the box for the Spectrum TV App...so it's a $300 Roku. Sigh!

    Just a heads up to everyone watching this before you reset the Xbox make sure if you have a SSD unplugged it from your Xbox and then reset your Xbox

    Sorry I didn't address it in the video. Unless you have your game saves backed to the cloud, they will likely not be saved if you use this option. If you think you didn't enable this function, you may want to try updating the firmware using a USB stick. I didn't cover it in this video but I can pin the link to the instructions from Microsoft if it's helpful. I think you can check if they are saved using the Xbox app or web browser.
