How to Fix / Repair Broken Wires, Cords and Cables

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have a wire, cord or cable that has been cut, frayed or otherwise made difficult, it's fairly easy to fix. You'll just need some scissors or a blade and some electrical tape. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

    Great question, Denis. Typically, the copper is the actual wire and the plastic/rubber shielding is just that - a shield. The shield needs to be peeled back to expose the copper, then the copper needs to be spliced to copper. If you have two wires like this in your cord, you can wrap each one individually with electrical tape and then tape the whole thing back up.

    If it's just wearing out and not actually broken, wrap it in electrical tape. You can also purchase wiring sleeves that you can place over the worn area and then apply heat (hair dryer) to shrink the sleeve onto the existing wire.

    Just wanted to say, an 11 year old video saved me. My rabbits chewed the cable that goes from my pedals to my steering wheel on my game racing steering wheel. It was a little scary to open the wire and discover there were six individual wires inside, but I followed these instructions and it totally works again. I couldn't find a replacement cable, so I figured I was looking at about $170 to replace the whole pedal assembly if this didn't work.

    instead of having to mess about bending wires back on themselves and double wrap etc why not just stagger the positive and negative connections so theyre an inch or so apart (at slightly different points along the cable). that way there is no physical possibility of them coming into contact and therefore less reliance on dreaded electrical tape as an insulator.

    I think i may have a freyed house wire somewhere inside the wall. I think its one of the wires going from the outlets in one of the bedrooms to the breaker box. Is there a way to have this fixed without tearing apart the drywall? I would really rather not have to deal with that if there is another way. There is a loud tick sound that occures from within the wall every time the compressor on my mini fridge kickes in. At first I was under the impression it was the mini fridge causing problems but now I'm thinking its a house wring problem reacting to the amp draw from the mini fridge when it turns on & off.

    Hello, I have a computer mouse and it has a fiber cord. The problem is that it has started to wear out and I would like to prevent it wearing out to the point the cord has no cover at all. Any tips will be appreciated, thanks.

    You did the right thing. I would wrap it securely with electrical tape and that should do the trick.

    Thanks for this. Very helpful. What needs to be done for an outside wire in terms of the elements.i.e waterproofing. ?

  • @LRN2DIY

    When it comes to outdoor wiring, you'll want to be much more careful. I'd recommend replacing the wire altogether if that's an option, being sure to use an outdoor-rated wire. You can use heatshrink tubing to help weatherproof things but it's not as secure as a new wire would be.

    you can buy heat shrink tubes that slip over the wire and than shrinks when you apply heat.

    My new laptop's charger cable got ripped, but the wires inside are fine and the cable still works fine, it's only the rubber coat around it that got a small crack. Is there some kind of liquid/rubber/glue material I can use to fuse the rubber together or should I use electrical tape instead?

  • @LRN2DIY

    @LRN2DIY

    Karrie Dreammind There isn't an easy way to fuse the rubber together without damaging the wire housings inside but you can buy plastic sleeves that you can heat up with a hair dryer to melt them around cable. Otherwise, electrical tape is your next best bet.

    It should work, yes, but keep in mind that the wires won't be as cleanly separated and may be separated by small nylon looking threads. I haven't tried it on that cable but it'd be worth a try!

    Hey! you video is fantastic, I do have a question tho. My keyboard has 4 wires inside a thicker wire. When I open the thicker wire, the 4 wires in the middle of it are wrapped around metal threads, do i need to worry about these metal threads, and if so there isn't a way to fix it is there?

  • @LRN2DIY

    @LRN2DIY

    10 жыл бұрын

    Great question. Here's the concept - if there's metal in there, it needs to be connected to the matching metal on the other end of the wire. It also needs to be insulated with the tape. In your case, you'll want to expose each of the four wires and connect them to the matching wires on the other side. Then connect the metal threads to each other as well. You'll end up with five separate connections. It's a pain but it should work. Good luck!

    My dog chewed, on my headphones right where it splits in two. How would I split the wiring? Is it the same concept?

  • @LRN2DIY

    @LRN2DIY

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, it's the same concept. If the dog chewed through both sides of the headphones (left ear and right ear), you'll need to splice together each wire, which will have two wires in each. Headphones are tough because the wires are tiny but it works the same way. Good luck, Eder!
