Before you do anything, flip the ps4 on it’s side and re insert disc. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you.

A fix that worked for me and for a lot of other people apparently is once you insert the disc start tapping on the top of your ps4 repeatedly until you hear it reading the disc. It'll sound smooth, not clunky like when it doesn't read it. I did everything on this video except for the last one and none of them worked. Decided to try the tapping method and IT WORKS. Now I'm off to play the Last of Us for the 100th time on my new monitor.

How do I update if my ps5 is already updated?

For everyone saying it didn't work, try turning it vertically. I literally thought it didn't work and then tried it again on the other side and bam! It worked.

Update on my post of 2 days ago... This fella’s advice DID work.. once. Just for the immediate issue, it did work. However, once a disk was removed or the power turned off.. the system went right back to, “Unrecognized Disk”. Now I was looking at performing this routine every time I wanted to play. So, I thought, “Why not just try this propping the console on it’s side deal that folks are talking about?”, and... PRESTO! Unbelievably, and most likely for some strange technical quirk that I don’t grasp, it works! I hadn’t tried it before due to how my entertainment system is set up - it’s a project. But, frustrated, I finally tried it. So for me, at least, standing the console on it’s side has solved the issue of “Unrecognized Disk”. Go figure. Still, this vid did provide relief for a problem that was driving me scooters.. at the time. Thanks for that.

If this doesn't work for you (it didn't for me) just stand your PS4 on its side and re-insert disc. That worked immediately. What I did to fix it permanently so I didn't have to turn my PS4 on its side or upside down was I bought a can of compressed air with the small straw and stuck the straw inside the disc reader and blew for like 20 seconds. Try to spread it around as much as possible. After that the discs started working again.

@@21Dazzler Vertically yes. Also what works for me is when I place the disc in you start tapping on the top of the PS4 and it should kick in. It's a dirty laser I believe.

call me synical but I think sony are deliberately doing this in there system updates to force users to purchase digital content and stop them buying cheap second hand copies of games which they make no money on. If you look back at pre launch of ps4 there was talk of making games assigning themselves to a specific console thus doing away with the second hand market. My ps4 pro has had this issue only after being 2 years old I mean come on surely a laser should last longer than that. I take good care of all my stuff and cant understand why this would happen. I still have my original Sega Saturn still boxed and its 25 years old and the laser on it is fine still loads games with no problem. So yeh in my opinion sony are at it big style. Im damn sure laser technology is now way more advanced than the unit that's in my Sega Saturn. 2 fingers up at u sony. And yeh I have tried all the so called fixes to no avail.

Adam Allardyce two of my discs don’t work but my third works and all three are first hand. Bought them directly from the store

OMFG! Flipping the PS4 on the side worked. It must be dust build up or something. I shook my PS4 while on its side while powered off to jiggle the dust off. It fixed the problem.

Thank you for the video. I followed the steps, but after step 3 - I cleared the cache and the disc worked after that. I'll try initialization if the problem becomes more stubborn, though, and it's great to know that's an option.

The “Update System Software“ (to V9.00 in my case) fixed the “Unrecognised Disc” (it was working for movie discs but not game discs, and instead drive was doing the clicking noise)

Mines stopped playing the game disc and i literally tried everything then i finally gave up and started to download my games then almost a week or 2 later it starts playing the disc again.

The issue actually continued to reoccur. I eventually took my PS4 SLIM apart and when I loosened some of the screws around the disk drive it’s worked fine ever since.

I want to know if tapping method only works when you have the "unrecognized disc" problem to your un-opened PS4. Coz tapping doesnt work on me and also putting it vertically. I got my "unrecognized disc" problem after disassembling and cleaning my PS4 Pro. But i dont think i broke something because im careful as fck. I want to know what might be causing it. I bought a PS4 that was extremely dusty, and it was a smoker's PS4, so the whole thing was gunked up. I started with spraying the dust out of everything. Then I tried the disc drive and it wasn't even taking, so I did the Qtip to the rollers thing and it worked like a charm like it usually does. But the disc wasn't reading afterwards. I tried your software methods, but I ended up having to take the disc drive apart and clean the laser. And luckily for me it did work right after. Very happy I don't have to replace the drive.

Just wanted to reiterate JellO’s comment from a year ago. If these tips from the video don’t work, and if the tip about turning the ps4 on it’s side doesn’t work either, try tapping the top of the ps4 when you put the disc in. As the video talks about at the end it might be an issue with the rollers inside, I think tapping the console gets them moving or something. Can’t say for sure, but it’s the only thing that consistently worked for me so far.
