The deficiency of the landcruiser handbrake is notorious and entirely at odds with Toyota's otherwise excellent engineering. You need to make several modifications to get it working. I suggest that you look at the Australian company "Superior Engineering". They do a replacement bell crank on the handbrake handle that pulls harder on the cable. Also the spreader bar between the shoes (in Australia we call those "dog bones") is too short. You can replace these easily and it will give more contact surface area of the shoes to the inner drum. Also, the shoes, hardware and cable need to be tip top. Everything must be properly lubed and adjusted for it to have a hope in hell of working.

I have literally spent the last week trying to get mine working and I'm all out of swears in my toolbox. What on earth is going on at Toyota that they think this POS design is OK? Thanks for the info about improved parts. Very happy to support local business!

@@lawnerddownunder3461 I used to think the handbrake was the worst design fail but I found a bigger issue. I popped a brake hose and found out that these vehicles do not have a dual circuit system! Foot to the floor - pump - NOTHING! Normally you'd only lose line pressure to either the front or rear brakes, not both. This happened to me twice at which point I replaced all rubber brake hoses with braided.

How do those running boards hold up on the trail? PO removed the boards on my truck. I don't do any heavy rock crawling but I like the rock slider look.

This particular pair isn’t that durable, but they are custom built and I got a good price on eBay.

does that adjustment "wheel" thing turn opposite direction on other side of car? for instance, right side turn it up to make the shoe tighten and left side turn it down to make the shoe tighten?

Mine was that way! I assumed it was wrong on my truck and flipped one so both sides the same way. Maybe that’s how they come though 🧐

@@JungleCatt yea, so ive got them both going same direction for adjusting now. still not 100% sure if its the correct way . but I found a video showing a much easier way of getting the shoe seated with that spring and cup and thing through the back plate, pain in the butt. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKCHz8d9nc-YlqQ.html

Sounds like the release button on the handle itself might be malfunctioning. I would remove the center console and inspect: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooqTwdaRmaewqag.htmlsi=TtJztqdR59DhFm2P
