ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this video, Matt demonstrates a convenient exercise to get rid of hunchback posture.
Using this exercise, you can train the muscles of the mid and upper back to achieve and maintain better posture. This exercise can help you with your hunchback (kyphosis) and forward head posture.
As with any exercise, this must be done regularly and consistently to get results that last. How long it takes will depend on how bad your posture is to start with and how much your daily habits put you in bad posture. In general, we recommend holding the position for 2.5 to 3.5 minutes and doing the exercise once or twice a day (more if your body responds well to it). If you spend a lot of time in a hunchback position or you find this exercise extremely difficult, you may need to do it more than someone who has less kyphosis.
If someone has a good overall lifestyle that allows them to stay out of bad posture for longer periods, they may need to do this very little.

    What about when I sleep? If I put a pillow under my head, I'm essentially pushing my head forward of my shoulders. Should I remove the pillow from under my head and put a pillow under my knees?

  • @TheEmbersFromAshes

    @TheEmbersFromAshes

    I've removed one of the 3 pillows I usually sleep using. That was a week ago. Man did it mess with my lower back! Finally seem to have adjusted to it so in a few days will start using just one pillow as am sure this has been a large contributor to my hunch posture. Once I've adjusted to that going to increase the wall sits and maybe start on some core exercises. Only drawback to the decrease in pillows is my snoring has increased in frequency and volume. Hubby verified that increase but I could tell by how my throat feels when I wake up. Hopefully he doesn't end up sleeping on the couch 😣

    This is awesome! This exercise worked for me right away! My whole life I've been told to "stand up straight" and "pay attention to my posture and it will improve". I knew there had to be an exercise that would strengthen my muscles and naturally improve my posture without me having to be thinking about it all the time. I had the intention to improve my posture and soon enough your video popped up on my app. This is a simple exercise and a small investment to make that makes all the difference on our appearance and even on our self esteem. From the first time I did it (for 3 minutes) I could feel my chest opening up and lifting! I've noticed that my shoulders are not hunched and my posture is GREAT without me having to worry about it! In fact, I tend to now straighten out often as though my muscles demanded it. I have done yoga for years and that was not sufficient to provide this effect. I'm writing this today because I want to thank you and let you know that I view this exercise as one of my Christmas gifts to me. Thank you so much!

I know some might argue and say that they make videos to "make money for creating KZread content" but they can choose to create any type of content they want it doesn't have to be informative helpful content like this it could be ridiculous videos like watching them play an online game or some other worthless useless activity but they choose to make content that is going to be helpful and possibly change people's lives for the better ..

    Wow. Thank you. So simple yet extremely effective. I suffered an injury to my back where I landed on the thoracic and upper spine . Took 50 days to recover and and 2 weeks later my back and lower limbs were neurologically sensitive. At my worse it took me 45 mins , with a cane, to walk a quarter of a mile. At one time I thought I wasn’t going to heal. Therapy,minimal paid meds, and lots of stretching and deciding to revisit scoliosis treatment got me to the point where I could attempt this exercise. Oh what a relief it is. Thanks again.

But your advice is applicable and gets effective results fast! I can feel the difference, and see the notable improvement immediately after 5mins of exercise against wall. Your method really pinpoints the key areas that need strengthening.

    This method is amazing! I have had severely bad posture for 5 years of my life, and I couldn’t get rid of it no matter how hard I tried. I started doing this method for 10 minutes a day 4 days ago, and I can already notice a significant improvement. It’s easier for me to stand up straight and hold the position for a longer period of time. I also noticed that I am standing up a little bit straighter subconsciously. Thank you!

    I love this! Thanks Matt for providing such simple yet effective techniques. Often don't even notice that am "slumping" while sitting or standing... but if I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or window, I can clearly see it. I am a guitar player ("classical nylon string") and I know I slouch doing that too. I want to see if I can improve my "playing posture" using this technique as well. Update: Well, I've been working on this for about 11 days now... Doing at least two 3.5 minute sessions every day. While I still can't touch the back of my head to the wall, I'm slowly getting closer. The biggest improvement I seeing (actully "feeling") is when am away from the wall and simply walking or standing, I'm beginning to get a sense of what my posture is doing and can feel when I'm close to getting it right. And that feeling is a good and positive one. So I'll keep working on it. I'm hoping that after a couple more weeks, I can actually begin to touch my head to the wall (without "cheating") but I'm not going to lock myself into an absolute time frame. I'll get there when I get there but will be happy to feel the progress in improved posture.

    I just tried doing this exercise and the immediate effect I can feel is actually insane, I stand much more upright! This is probably very short term and as my muscles relax again I will slouch a bit more again, but for now it's a very similar feeling to when you stand in a doorway and push your arms towards the outside against the frame of the door. When you do that for a minute and then step out of the doorway, your arms will feel like they're levitating so I think this is a similar effect now :D Can definitely see this make long term improvements for my posture though, thanks a lot!

    This absolutely works. I've been a competitive ballroom dancer for decades. I've always suffered from bad posture. In the last few months I've had a neck problem. My physio gave me this exercise. Almost immediately, it sorted my dancing posture. This absolutely works, and I do it for 5 minutes at least, 6 times per day. The presentation here is excellent. My physio told me off at first because I was just tilting my head back . I make a " double chin" , and keep it while getting my head against the wall . I just wish I'd seen this 20 years ago. I'd have done better ! I had lots of lessons from all sorts of professional teachers, but none of them came close to fixing it

On my first try I really felt all my muscles working, they stretched and I actually had trouble breathing, probably because my torso was in the right position in front after years of being without any work. I will try to do this multiple times every day because its getting critical with my back and people are making uncomfortable comments about my posture.
