Thank you for this video! I've actually started replacing the gas cap, and also the Purge valve under the hood (got a DORMAN OEM for about $36CDN on Amazon) and I did not have an engine light for about 3 days. Then, it was back :( so I ordered the part you showed replacing here (also $36CDN on Amazon), and I have yet to put it on, but I'm glad you showed what it looks like, and how to replace it. My old girl is over 255K Km so I can't sink hundreds/thousands of dollars into repairs, so I'm crossing my fingers this is it :) Thank you for showing this so clearly!

If this does not fix it, a trusted shop (Not Dodge dealer) should be able to do a smoke test to it and see where the leak is coming from at a reasonable cost. As for a quote on the test.

I have a 2007 Dodge Caravan and an acquaintance told me to use this one garage for my issue. I was noticing a gas smell after we made a trip. The garage replaced the fuel pump as they said the nipple was cracked and leaking. Day after I had the van I looked under it on the drivers side door and noticed 2 hoses not lined up and not connected to each other. Shortly after that a check engine light came on. Took it back. They had to drop the fuel tank again as one of the hoses was pinched under the tank. He showed me after he repaired it. One hose went to the charcoal canister. Then we went on a trip and I could not pmp gas in the tank as the pump would shut off like if the gas tank was full. I got 10 seconds of gas in with each try. I took it back again and told him it must be a breather hose that is pinched or something. Sure enough he dropped the tank again and it was. I asked if the hose was damaged, and he said NO. I was able to fill the tank with no issues. Full tank of gas. We went on another trip, and I noticed poor gas milage. We got home with half a tank of gas that should have been 3/4 tank. 3 hrs later we got in the van and within 1 minute of driving the "gascap" message came on. I did what you did in the video.....cleaing the spout and lubing the gasket. Did not help. There was no engine check light after pushing the milage button to get rid of the message, but the message came right back. I did check for codes anyway and there was one about the gascap.. Check engine light does come on too when I turn the key so I know it lights. Anyway, I did not do the rest of what you did as I am figuring it has something to do with this mechanics work. Any thoughts? I do not want to go back there. He may have the highest mechanic rating you can get...but he is sloppy in his repairs.

99% it's the connector either corroded, or broken wires. Sometimes this yes, but most cases connection issues. Little pieces of sandpaper, will fix the issue... :)

Thanks Mark, all valuable information. On mine it was the black elbow hose. Zip tie on each end fixed it.

Wow! Great you caught that they were leaking! Cheap fix for sure.

Has soon has I removed this part, I could see where the wires on this unit had melted the plastic on the connector. Wonderful.

@@unclemarksdiyauto Not sure why the connector on the unit melted. The sealing O ring was missing also. Hopefully after replacement of these parts, the CEL will disappear. Good job on this video. Very helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. I changed the gas cap before finding your video but the check engine light is on as well as the gas cap. I will buy the ESIM and replace that and see what happens.

@unclemarksdiyauto I couldn't erase the code with my code delete, my gas cap is clean. I own a 2007 dodge ram pickup so I will have to find that plastic part under the truck another day. I greatly appreciate your videos

It takes about 100 miles for the Check Engine light to go off after the gas cap is corrected. Don't buy the napa gas caps. They feel worn out when you get them. It fixed the code for about a month, then came back.

yep on the use only a Dodge gas cap! Mine when off after a drive around the block with this exact problem and fix shown in the video. It’s been over a year since this repair. (Video is almost a year old but I upload videos and schedule them up to 6 months before they play on youtube) (I have scheduled videos coming out in May 2024!) Thanks for your comment which adds strength to everyone else that says don’t waste money on aftermarket gas caps.

Maybe a bit high, but sensors and electronics I would only use the OEM parts.

Great info, but where is this located on the Caravan? Under the hood, what side Lt or Rt? Is it possibly under the van? Lt or Rt side? Is it inside the interior?????

@@jandzluvly You tried cleaning around the gas cap and a little lube to seal? It might be the gas cap, (some don't trust the aftermarket ones but the Dodge one is 3 times the price) Otherwise, it probably is this ESIM. (A shop would smoke test both these locations before confirming a fix) At this point, it still is a guess. Let us know what you find!

3 dodge vehicles here, I’ve noticed if the gas cap does not fall into a spring response when slightly turning the thumb turn ultimately the engine light will come on with a code or the gas cap light will present. You have to find the sweet spot where the cap will spring back, just the thumb turn not the body that goes into the filler neck. Every time so far when I get the cap in the sweet spot the code will not come back once cleared and the gas cap light will not illuminate.

Wow. Is that the original MOPAR gas cap? All go here since my replacement. My boss has 3 Grand caravans and no gas cap message & I maintain his as well. He nor his kids and wife ever had mentioned they have to fiddle with the gas caps when filling & I have never seen their gas cap message on. I doo know after market caps are a issue.

What's the name of that vacuum part under the van?

This works in conjunction with the rest of the evap system. Your theory sounds possible, if the system also does not monitor when the pressure is low right after a fill, or at some other time as it maybe does a precheck.

This is so helpful. I got a 2012 Dodge Avenger SE. My GASCAP warning light came on and I did all the things you said to do so my next step is to buy a new cap and see. If not then I'll get the Evaporative EVAP Emissions System Leak Detection Pump as a last resort. Thank you.

@@unclemarksdiyauto I replaced the gas cap, EVAP fuel detector and the Purge Solenoid Valve. Light is still on. Tried to clear it. Going to drive around for a full tank of gas and see. The code was P0457.
