    Paul ty for your valuable imfo,this is jimmy and daisy dog mobile mechanic,my customer had a p0442 code and so since I've literally replaced all his hose during my process of bringing his lexus to life,I followed your advice.wrapped several layers of plastic bags around gas cap and no new code.pulled off cap removed rubber oring cleaned gas tube area and gas cap used synthetic caliper grease generously and seal was incredible.that caliper grease is good as it is synthetic and does not damage rubber!! So ty sir and God bless you and yours this new year 24!

    Great video. I never thought about that. It makes a lot of sense. I thought that when your gas cap got old that it would leak fuel vapors and that's what would set off the check engine light. I didn't know about the fuel tank pressure escaping. Thanks Paul.

    No one has addressed what the "clicking" function actually does - and in fact if you try to find any info on the net about the anatomy of a modern gas cap - you can't. Why? Because one of the primary failures of the modern day gas cap is the "inner" seal - which is what the click regulates. Manufacturers want to sell new gas caps as often as they can. The outer seal works to control the seal of the cap outer threads that hold the cap in place - so they do not go out of their way to inform people about maintaining gas caps. The "inner" seal works to set the caps "pressure" maximum level - meaning, if the pressure in the tank reaches a certain height, the air can escape. This should normally not happen if the evap system is working - but the function has to be in place as a safety measure. When the inner seal gets dirty and clogged, the cap will not seal - thus the over-pressure regulation is wide-open. The only way to "clean" the inner seal is to remove the cap from the attachment cord and soak it in soap and water - then blow it out with compressed air. Dirt enters the inner portion of the cap through the vent holes you can see at the top of the cap.

    Thanks for the great simple common sense explanation and video. One question: to lube the gasket, what kind of household type products could I use? petrolium jelly? WD-40, water-based lubricant? lithium grease, etc? Or would I need the product you used?

  • @deedle6073

    Avoid anything petroleum based since it will cause the rubber to swell up. You can just get some silicone brake lube or dielectric grease at any auto store. They may even carry O-ring specific lube and that would probably be the best to use.

    I have a doubt. As I understood, there is a vacuum pressure inside the tank, which means the pressure outside the fuel cap is bigger. So, if the cap didn't seal correctly, there will be air entering the tank, right? I mention this because there is something really weird happening in my car. It randomly fails to keep accelerating even tho I have the pedal fully pressed and it happens only in hot weather in sunny days (20°C and more). I suspected the problem comes from the EVAP system when I removed the fuel cap in a hot sunny day and I heard a "whoosh" coming from the filler neck - which, as I understood, would be most likely air entering the tank, since there is a vacuum pressure inside it. Any insight will be very appreciated.

  • @giro994

    @giro994

    2 ай бұрын

    Hopefully you've figured this out by now, but there's supposed to be that "whoosh" when removing the cap if the vehicle has been run recently (which is why I think I need to lube or replace the gasket on one of our vehicles that isn't doing that). Seems like your issue is something else. Check the OBDII for codes to help get you in the right direction (many auto parts places will do this for you for free). Try to figure out if it is the engine or the transmission. And do the simple things first, like cleaning/replacing the air filter, checking the fluid levels, seeing if you have any drips or even gunk on the bottom of the car, and looking around in the engine compartment for anything that is disconnected (especially small vacuum lines, or the big air intake). There's tons of things it could be, but start with the big things. It would probably take a lot more troubleshooting if it was something small, like a bad temp sensor or a leaking seal somewhere.

  • @felipemunoz4177

    @@giro994 thanks for your response. Just for the record, I searched for codes with no success and replaced spark plugs, injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, solenoid purge valve, EVAP canister, air filter and TPS sensor and none of these actually worked solving the problem. I also cleaned the throttle body. The car was "usable", so in the meanwhile I had to use the car anyways and learn to live with the problem while I think of another solution. The thing is, the day of oil change arrived, so I pulled an "engine flush plus" from Liqui Moly and replaced the oil. Since then, the problem dissapeared completely. Maybe there was some gunk stuck somewhere inside it, I don't really know...

  • @giro994

    @giro994

    2 ай бұрын

    @@felipemunoz4177 Good that it is working for you now. I was thinking to check the oil and automatic transmission levels, and how clean that transmission fluid is. But that would be if it wasn't shifting right. When a friend gave me a 3000gt a decade ago that had a bad engine knock and was failing CA emissions, after getting gas to drive it home it didn't feel right so I didn't jump back onto the freeway. It was barely idling, and spewing smoke. After he had it towed back to his house, I checked it out for a couple days, looking at all sorts of things like you did. In the end it turned out that part of the air handling after the mass airflow sensor had come undone when I downshifted getting off the freeway. It was a simple thing of just reconnecting it. But with it disconnected, a different amount of air was getting in than the computer thought there way, so once the car warmed up and was using these sensors it just ran terribly. I had it for a while after that, but the head gasket was already having some issues, and when I drove it hard up the mountain after taking it to the DMV I think I finished off that head gasket. I had too many projects to do, so ended up selling it (with full disclosure), but still wish I had kept it and replaced the head gasket myself. It was a fun car.

    @@giro994 sometimes the smallest things causes the biggest problems. I never faced this problem before and it was actually driving me nuts, I mean come on... I replaced just about everything. The car not showing me any codes was odd, and now I know where to start looking if another car has these symptoms. Maybe worth to note, I was using Mobil Super 3000 5w30 and replaced it with Liqui Moly New Generation Molygen 5w30 and the car is now running really nice.
