How To Fix A Sagging Door

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Got a door that’s sagging?
This one is rubbing at the top.
Let me show you the best way to fix it.
First, pick out a 2 ½” long screw that is the same color and diameter as your hinge screws.
You’re going to need a bit for the screw- this one is Phillips.
I’m using an extension to clear the door, and you’ll need a drill or an impact driver.
We just moved into this apartment while we are building our new house, and this is a repair that needed to be done.
These hinge screws were loose and completely stripped out, and they were only long enough to go into the door jamb.
I replaced this middle hinge screw because it’s closer to the center of the jamb and more likely to reach the framing.
The 2 ½” screw will go all the way through the door jamb and into the 2x4 stud behind it.
Once the head of the screw reached the hinge, I kept on going so that it would pull the hinge and the jamb back to where it needed to be.
I also replaced the screw above- The door is no longer sagging, and it doesn’t rub.
The margin above the door is still big, but it opens and closes like it should. ‪@hausplans‬

If the hole is stripped for the longer screw as well, then you can fill the hollow with toothpicks and a little glue. Then wait 30 minutes for it to dry then drill your screw back in. It has always worked for me.

I did that to the door leading to my attic a few years ago, it sagged bad and all the hinge screws were falling out. I replaced the screws with 4" deck screws. When I put in the last screw in the middle hinge, all the lights went out and I got a huge jolt. Turns out the wires leading from the breaker panel to the second floor ran along the inside of the adjacent 2x4, that last screw had run through the romex and the wires to my doorbell, which also fried. A sagging door turned into a f-ing mess. I had to rip out the drywall, run new wires, replace the doorbell and wires and replace the 2x4 behind the door jamb because the real problem was that it was split top to bottom from where they screwed the door jamb in years ago, $700 later at HD it was all better.

What do you do when you live in an old apartment that's 80 years old and the screws only attach to the doors in the bathroom. The hinges are stuck and painted over to the old metal frame. The new door they installed because the original lock seized and was stuck shut so I broke it open. Now the new door is rubbing at the top and won't shut no matter how much I readjust it and now the hinge on the door is loose and rocking but the door is hollow and has nothing solid to drive a longer screw into it
