Oh man you are a freakin genius - The Big Lebowski. After your tip I removed the the cover/cap by moving it forward and twisting off. Then unscrewed the nut. Removed the valve. Took a toothbrush and lukewarm water and cleaned the bell-end and put all back. . It freakin works. You need a beer button. You're the man!

You are so lucky I had to take the whole system apart spend 15 quid to a new part. Took me 4 hours taking the whole damn thing apart because all the screws were completely rusty and I couldn't take the cistern off a week later I took that unit apart and then I realise that the problem was. If I would have known it would have taken me 10 seconds and would have saved the half a day of my life.
