How to fix a cracked plastic wheelbarrow and save a ton of money $$$$

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Do you hate wasting money when taking a few moments to repair the item could save you hundreds of dollars of unnecessary expense. In my case I found that my 10+ year old plastic wheelbarrow had developed a very large crack that may have spelled "the end" of it and then forced my hand to spend money that I really did not wish to spend at this moment. In this video I demonstrate my first time trying to repair it using the techniques that I found online.

I used to work in plastic injection molding., even though I was a material handler. It looks like you have the right idea about plastic welding this back together. Like you said, use the same material, that way it keeps it all consistent.

My apologies for not responding earlier. I have been crazy busy the last 3 months and I have been a little neglectful to responding to comments. Been remodeling my daughter's recently purchased home. Yes I had done some serious research to try and figure out what would work best, and the majority of what I found was "use the same material that the item is made of", so that's where I came up with using itself to make the repair...it's not quite cannibalism, but ......maybe!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Great idea making a filler strip from that overhang! You'll have to give us an update video on how it holds up. I hate repairing plastic, its such a crap-shoot trying to get the right adhesives for the right plastic, especially if you dont know what kind of plastic your are working with.

I completely agree. I originally started by looking up epoxies, etc to see what might work. Then I came across an article that was pretty straightforward that the guy basically stated "at one point in time the piece of plastic was "melted" or "softened" to form whatever product that you are using and now it's cracked the only way to repair it is to heat it to the point of "melting/softening" to where the plastic uses itself to seal the crack" (not a quote verbatim, but the basic gist, LOL) In regards to what type of plastic to use, he stated and this held true for the wheelbarrow, there were some markings on the bottom that supposedly tell what the "type" of plastic it is. Thanks for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

For a durable repair, reinforce the patch by imbedding ss screen or staples into the patch similar to how a car bumper is repaired.

Great idea. But who's crazy idea was it to start making wheelbarrows out of plastic? I should have bought a steel one in the first place. I fell for plastic too and have the same problem! Never again.

Tony, I agree, it is a little crazy, it was probably to have something that may not rust. BUT the other side of the coin, is that obviously the plastic can and most likely will crack. So far the wheel barrow has held up. Hopefully it will last a few more years. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

This is one way to fix a wheelbarrow tub that I hadn't considered. I was thinking about using fiberglass and an epoxy to patch mine. Could you give us an update on how well the patch held up? Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I appreciate it.

Jon, yes same here. I did do some research and when I was done it just made sense. “If you’re going to mend a crack, use the same material that the tub is made of!” 💡💡💡So far the fix is holding up very well. I will definitely look at doing a follow up video. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Thrifty is smart and sensible, agreed. I was not raised with much money, my dad worked 4 jobs, but taught us to work hard and to "use it, wear it out, make due or do without!" So we were shown to try and fix something first before you just simply toss it out.

To date it is still holding strong. It is stored in my shed and the bracket that holds it up against the wall sits right on that rear seam. (Probably one of the reasons that .section cracked originally LOL) So it bears 95% of the wheelbarrow's weight. It has moved 15 cubic yards of soil (some dense heavy loads) and some other heavy loads. Actually had to replace the tire because it blew out. So I would say that it has been a success so far, and has put off shelling out money for a new one. Thanks for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

I have stress cracks around three bolt holes holding the tray to the handles. I took everything apart for a rebuild and painted the wood and steel reinforcements and am replacing several rusted bolts. I welded the plastic cracks. I don't have a lot of confidence in the durability of that repair. I have two sheets of stainless steel sheet metal --- I'm considering adding that as reinforcement to the tray. I'm also considering adding 1/4" plywood under the tray with filler of some kind between the tray and plywood since it's not flat. Steel trays rust ----but it takes a LOT of rusty before they are destroyed,. I painted up my thirty year old rusty steel tray and it should be good for an additional decade or so before it needs it again. Plastic trays crack. How effective those repairs are remains to be seen.

Sounds like you have gone the extra mile to repair your wheelbarrow. I absolutely love this approach, we live too much in a "throw it away" culture. But I happy to report that, to date, the repair is holding strong and I hope to get a few more years out of the wheelbarrow. Pointing to your statement, it isn't beautiful but it works!! To date I have used it on 4 projects this last year 2022, and there has been no deterioration in the fix. I will say that it is stored in my shed. We have had some very cold temps over the last weeks, and where the wheelbarrow is hung it rests right on that area that was cracked. I have recently had full blown shoulder surgery, and I haven’t checked on it, in the shed for the last two months. I will check it and get back with you. Thank you for the comment. I have used the wheelbarrow twice since then, and it is holding up fantastically. NO issues at all. I did consider the epoxy and fiberglass, and did the research and thought it would be a great way to do it quick and easy and "see" if it REALLY works, and so far I have been glad I made this choice. Saved some $$$ along the way. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
