How to fit a Picture Rail

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video guide, we show you how to fit a picture rail to your wall. We start by measuring and marking out a chalk line, fitting the first picture rail length and showing you how to do a scribe join.
Picture rails were originally used to hang pictures or photographs. They are now used as a style feature or to break up two sections or wallpaper.

Presumably he is cutting a length to fit between two corners of a room. How do you get the piece exactly to the correct length so that it fits exactly between the corners? You cannot measure this distance directly because the tape measure won't bend into the corner.

What’s the reason for using chalk to draw the line rather then just a pencil?

If you are going to be a working in bigger room then it will be more accurate using a chaulk line or even laser level.

Can be a pain if you need to paint a light coloured emulsion on afterwards too if you don't get rid of any surplus chalk.

Affix picture rail to the wall using screws into the studs. It's for hanging picture and bras nails are NOT enough. Pre-drill your holes. Construction adhesive really screws the next person who wants to remove the picture rail; they would destroy the wall!

I'm pretty certain original picture rails were put up with nails. And the Victorians liked to use some pretty heavy frames !!

I’m a total beginner so please forgive a possibly stupid question... why don’t you do a 45 degree cut on each piece for the corners, rather than cut the profile out of one of them?

You should scribe internal corners because unless your walls are perfectly square and the internal angle is spot on 90 degrees (which is rare) the corner joint won't be tight and it will look horrible!

With the scribed method, it looks like it still requires filling to finish, is there problem with cutting both at 45 and filling to finish?

@@carldurrant9649 scribing gives you a more consistent gap to fill.

My dudes...camera work somewhat lacking. Shaky, unfocused, zoomed too close. Otherwise, breathtaking.

how do you get the measurement correct. when you marked your point for cutting you could not be seen. what happens at the other end. too much presumed for beginners to follow. people who know these basics would be able to do everything on this video already. Sorry mate nice try
