My husband said to me, "Let's see what Paige has to say about rugs." He clicked on the video. Paige: "Rugs."
Rugs: my fave decor topic. :). I'm so glad you're covering it!!! I think I might start with an understanding of - methods for making / constructing rugs, why certain methods are better, long lasting, and more expensive. Hand knotted vs "hand tufted" (note the quotes) vs machine loomed, etc. - materials and pros and cons of each: natural (silk, wool, cotton, jute, etc) polypropylene, "bamboo silk" etc). And natural vegetable dyes v synthetic dyes. - care of rugs, including types of rug pads and why--note that some pads will discolor your floor. Also rotating rugs, protecting from sun damage, avoiding rotary head vacuums. - modern v ancient traditions of rug making vs faux and knock offs (eg hand knotted Asian and middle eastern and indigenous / tribal patterns and styles v fake copy-cat stuff that prints a pattern on, faux antiques, etc.) - how to choose a rug based on how you'll use it, where it will be in your home (eg high traffic entry; drop-risk dining room; low-risk bedroom) - how to choose a style, color and pattern and why--and what to avoid, when, and why. I always start my online marketplace and resale searches with "knotted rug" because I'm pretty sure this will only bring up the highest quality rugs. I might also toss in "wool rug," because not everyone selling their grandparents' kick-azz antique hand knotted tribal rugs will know enough about them to advertise them as knotted. But wool rugs might be tufted, and these aren't as good as knotted. Also, some Etsy sellers can trick buyers into thinking they're buying a hand knotted rug, rug w veg dyes, a silk v "silk" rug, and so on, so keeping eyes peeled for how to tell what's what is also good. IMO. :) One of the best pieces of advice I got from a designer was in helping to make my small living room feel larger. She pointed out that rugs w a border pattern, especially a high-contrast border pattern, and a central medallion pull the eye in and make the area feel smaller (good for open floor plans needing space definition). A rug with a pattern that spills off the edge with no border, or a rug with a low-contrast almost imperceptible border pattern helps pull the eye out, making the space feel larger. Also, keep in mind that pretty much every rug can be cut to size. If the manufacturer can't do it, then take it to a reputable rug cleaning and repair shop. They can cut to your size specifications and bind the cut edge(s) for you. Great if you want max coverage (just buy a rug a size too big and have one or two edges trimmed) or a very specific location and size in mind. I have high end hand knotted and low end machine rugs in my home. I know which ones I strongly prefer :) but I can't always get what I wa-aant*. That's life. :) But it helps to know what to look for! You'll know when you found a crazy amazing deal, and you'll know what's never worth your money--something better will inevitably come along. *Rolling Stones

What a great comment, thank you for that! I want to know more about all the topics you described.. are there any sources you recommend for a start? 🙏✨

Thanks for this detailed comment! I was considering a medallion style rug with a big border for my living room, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why I thought it would look bad, even though the rug itself is gorgeous. Pulling the eye in, and making the room feel smaller is the perfect way to describe it! I'm on the hunt for a pattern that "runs off" the rug now. Thank you!

I should say I am *not* an expert. I grew up w parents who delighted in traditional rug making with ancient roots, especially in Asia and the Middle East, as well as indigenous rug making in the Americas such as Navaho rugs. So what I learned, I learned through osmosis, and spending lots of time as a kid climbing around on giant piles of rugs at "oriental rug galleries" and so on. These ancient knotting and weaving techniques are still the best in the world, and high end modern carpets use these techniques too. So there are loooooots of rabbit holes you can go down! I might start with search terms ["hand knotted" "tufted" "machine made" rug] as a first step to learn some basics about manufacturing, which is higher quality, and why.

I am partial for medallion and Persian rugs so I don't mind if the room could look smaller, which I don't think is always the case, but that is just me and what I had observed@@jessicalouisewood315

thanks so much for this comment!
"gabbeh" is a type of Persian rug, actually! it's the name of the style of rug. I'd recommend that anyone interested in this kind of rug should try to find sellers from Iran! usually, the quality is much higher and its on the lower end of the cost spectrum

any tip on how to find these? most im seeing are from the US and a few made in india.
Keep the orange rug! It's such a beautiful pop of color in your living room.
I think it would be valuable for you to look into the historical and cultural context of the different “code-words”.. just a thought. instead of throwing them around like they’re just aesthetics
Paige please do a video on affordable hanging light fixtures and wall sconces next!

You should do a whole series of one off topics like this. Curtains, wallpaper, bar ware, lighting, etc.
I appreciate low pile, affordable rugs since my cats will use it as a vomit platform and sometimes even a litter tray. They don't care if they ruin a handwoven Peruvian rug that I carried back to England (proven fact).

My husband wanted the rug from the Big Lebowski, so we found one just like it. It’s very busy, but it does tie the room together.
This might be your niche, Paige. Finding stuff that doesn’t look like everybody else’s stuff.
Could you do a similar video on finding affordable, but also quality artwork? Especially focusing on larger statement pieces would be soooo helpful!

Always contact the vendor and ask what kind of wool the rug is made from. If the wool is from New Zealand, England, or Ghazni wool from Afghanistan, it's high quality. If the wool is from India or Pakistan, it is likely poor quality. I've found that Golden Nile usually has very good deals on high quality oriental rugs
I’m obsessed with your newsletter. I look forward to it every week. I have them all saved in a folder in a special folder. I have them all except for some reason I didn’t get #11. I found a post on Reddit about you so i left a comment asking if anyone was subscribed to the newsletter and some girl responded that she did and she also saved them all and she sent me #11!
Rugs are a problem for most people because they don’t want to spend money. I have one huge wool rug I paid $1,500 and it was the best purchase for my home ever and will not wear out. I wouldn’t have anything but wool.

Or it’s not that we “don’t want to” spend $1,500 on a rug, it’s that I can’t imagine ever actually having that much expendable cash Hell, $500 would take me months to pay off
oh they absolutely deserve a full video
My secret to getting any “higher end” box store rug, is getting the clearance floor models or seasonal clearance. One of my most recent scores was a hand tufted wool Crate and Barrel rug 9x12 that I only paid $150 for. It was a floor model and only needed to be vacuumed, 2k rug for Pennies basically.
your hinge profile was great- best part of the vlog! GOOD ONE and Funny!
Oushak rugs are not from Pakistan, they are from Turkey! It’s a Turkish brand.
I bought the plain wool Arvin Olano rug in fawn and it's so so good. Very plush and the way it's woven gives it a slight pattern so it doesn't look like boring carpet. My dogs just tracked mud on it this morning and it wiped right up. If you're on the fence, definitely get it! I also have to say that the new plush rugs from Ruggable are great too. I have a 9x12 from the AD collection and it's my favorite rug in the house.

"I can't swear in the first 60 seconds." 🤣
I've been LOVING the news letter!! It's been a good resource for ideas and inspo that I can easily go back and look through 👌❤
Frank Loyd Wright was known for "Prairie Style." Charles and Henry Greene were known for American Arts & Crafts style.
Thank you PAIGE! Great Advice! Came here following your ‘cheap homewares’ vlog with a cheap rug in my online basket and you have saved me from a cheap poly rug buy as desperate to cover my gross rented carpet, am now happily in a delightful Etsy rug wormhole….
This was so fun that I am insisting you make a full house series. You pretend to buy a house and then pretend to furnish it. We need this!!!
About time someone did this kind of video. Thanks for the keywords that will help me narrow down my search for the perfect rugs 🙏
You are a rare gem 💎 and we're lucky to be in this space with you!

Interesting rugs and face. I look forward to searching rugs more on my own...but won't buy until I find the house I'll purchase and my four elderly cats have earned their wings in heaven.
I’ve been waiting for a rug video from you for while bc I’ve been trying to find one for my living room. But I just bit the bullet and got one from the Arvin Olano collection. So glad you approve!!
Yippeee I needed this ✌🏼 Thank you Paige !!! Love your channel 🌷
These Modern Bungalow rugs you showed us are positively stunning. I had never seen such rugs before, never knew they existed, and am stunned. Here in Greece you either see the classic oriental rug, or the modern ones.
My work “friday” is sunday and i am always so excited to watch your new video when i get off work. Love your channel paige, i am yet to find any other interior design channel that i enjoy like yours.
I absolutely love your Hinge profile. It’s inspired me to create a profile that highlights my authentic self. The rugs are great too. Got lots of ideas. Thank you 😊
This is so helpful thank you so much!!! I have been browsing forever but have had no idea what to look for other than pattern and color
10:53 I LOVE LOVE THIS TYPE OF RUGS
Great video, suggestions and inspiration. Love the newsletter…look forward to it each week!
Excellent rugs and your choices are chefs kiss! Thank you! Needed this
Holy crap those modern bungalow rugs are gorgeous!!
I don't live where I can buy these, probably... but I loooove getting inspired by these types of prints and styles. I also do photoshop with these types of rugs as background for my collages. Love ❤
I need a video about curtains 😊
I needed this!
Love the rugs and your newsletter. Was also fun watching the one where you took the viewers to work with you.
Totally just bought one of the green gabbeh rugs with the little guys on it! Thanks for the recs!
Sunday has become my fav day with this. Rugs are super important!!!... they tie the room haha
I can tell this video required a lot of thoughtful research! Thank you for all your efforts. This was extremely helpful as I'm always stuck without a rug because I'm forever searching for the right/affordable vintage one...
I learned so much! Thank you for making this! I’m down for more videos like this! ❤
Thank you for your... rugs. This is top tier amazingly helpful. I just spent a 3 hour deep dive looking fro rugs I like and found like 15 and am now sending this video to everyone I know and came back to rewatch and thank you
thank you so much for this video! I've been wanting to get a new rug for years but have been nervous on how to buy a quality but affordabe rug. ended up buying a rug from one of the etsy store you suggested and am so happy with it!! thank you!
THANK YOU. Thank you. THANK YOUUUU. This video is so extremely helpful. Ya girl was paralyzed making a decision on a rug.
This is such a great video and so extremely helpful thankyou for doing all the research leg work!!!
Rugs are good. Gabbeh is good. Your hinge profile is delightfully quirky. Love that you’re you!
You included the exact rug that I've been considering! Definitely getting it now it's been Paige approved!
Loved this video
Excellent video! Thank you--I need this help on my current rug agony and confusion. I feel less overwhelmed now. I’m shopping Etsy and may have found “the one.” Woot!
I've been hyper fixating on rugs for the last week so this is great timing lol. The other day I ordered a very large hand knotted wool rug on etsy I've been looking at for a year, excited to get it. It won't be as thick as I like but I did decide in this one instance since I loved it so much, I'd make a sacrifice there. I've been looking for a whole year and didn't find anything I loved as much for my loft area. Ive actually been thinking about getting one of Arvins rugs for my livingroom as well, the brick coloured one. They look so thick and the subtle colour varitations in the solid rug is beautiful.
So pumped! Just purchased the Joss & Main rug right after receiving the link from your newsletter. Thanks so much, Paige! And also, those hoops look amazing!
Loved the rug video ! Love you, love the rugs. Hope the date went well 💃🕺🫶
Loved this! Can’t wait for the newsletter! I need a rug for my bedroom. It needs to be vintage looking and thick and comfy.
I liked it. Rugs overwhelm me so this was really helpful.
it's shockingly hard to find good affordable rugs, so many great tips Paige! I also really like Revival Rugs, they have tons of vintage options and their own line as well, some are a little pricier but tons are super affordable! I got a gorgeous, super plush/comfy 6x9 rug for $500, and I'm eyeing up a few of their vintage ones as well
Def kept the robe pic, super cute was my favorite. And love the plum and napkin ♥️
yes. this is what i want. this is what i need.
omg love the fact that you mentioned Modern Bungalow! my favorite FB Marketplace find for my home was the Prairie rug you showed. 10x14. but in green, for $500!
Loved the rug video
Great tips for rug styles! Now I just need to figure out how to appropriately size rugs for the room.
You really do have an uncanny ability to find amazing rugs. Your peeps need the Wassel hacks. Thank you for sharing the brain trust! ❤
Needed this video! I just got a new place and it needs rugs ✨
This video was perfect and I would love a similar one on curtains / window treatments. Another item where inexpensive options aren't great and quickly gets VERY expensive.
Your newsletter is bomb. The Jokes are perfection.
Thanks for the Etsy tip! I just saw a 10 x 14 cool, modern wool rug in AD that was $3000+ on the website of the company being touted but only $1200+ on Etsy. It looked identical. That was a revelation.
I'm totally in need of a large area rug. Thanks for this
Love your rugs and hinge
It’s funny that you mentioned the Arvin Alano collection because I just ordered the solid colored one. I ordered the green of course because it’s my favorite color. I can’t wait to get it.
This video was super helpful! I really found it helpful that you included key search words. I've already got a new rug for my space on the way by using these tips! One area that I am currently stumped on is bathroom decor. I know that WAS shower curtains are on the horizon, so maybe a video on how to elevate bathrooms in an affordable way? My bathroom looks like a frat boy's mom picked out everything at target for him. :)
I love the Arvin Olano Arrel rug (I purchased it in verdant green for the bedroom), highly recommend it! I may purchase another in "wheat" for the living room.
Thank you, I have been desperate for this episode, I find it so hard to choose rugs.
Need this type of video for floor lamps!!!
would love a similar video on desks or an office set up!
the hinge profile walkthrough alksdjfklsadj also the rug selections were excellent thank you! :D
Saving this video for when I buy a home later in the year😁😁 manifesting
I like the rugs and your face! I feel like I could never get back on Hinge tho. Signing up for the newsletter FINALLY.
If I could afford those rugs, I’d totally buy one! Also, your hinge profile is awesome… I feel like it represents you really well
Love the rugs...& wool
Cold Picnic is also a super cool rug brand! a different style than these but still so fun. also loveee all these rugs wowie thank you for finding them!
Can confirm the newsletter is very fun, cannot confirm Hinge dates are fun.
I’ve bought a couple of rugs from Turkey via Etsy. Also some great pillows.
Hope that your date was fun. Yes, I like your face. Also really enjoy your newsletter!
Off topic - glad you went to Waco cuz I’m in LA and my 2 kids go to Baylor and was considering investment property. On topic, needed this video! Thanks 🙏🏽
Thumbnail with a fake smile hehehe your funny, great info today I know you did a lot of research on this so please know I was teasing
Also, if you are lucky enough to have a good carpet/flooring store in your area, they have a vast selection of carpets you can customize for size. (Not box stores) They include wool, silk, blends, solids, textures and beautiful prints. Also machine made that are affordable and also unique. I’m on the rug hunt now-thanks for the video and leg work.
I found a brand new Ralph Lauren Persian style area rug at Ross for $179 to fill up the dining room at my mom’s house. I found it by accident and had to get it because it was too good of a deal to pass on. You’d be very surprised what you can find at these discount stores if you know how to hunt for good deals (discount home stores, flea markets, estate sales, ebay and other online marketplaces, etc).
