    My husband said to me, "Let's see what Paige has to say about rugs." He clicked on the video. Paige: "Rugs."

  • @MGheen
    @MGheen4 ай бұрын

    Rugs: my fave decor topic. :). I'm so glad you're covering it!!! I think I might start with an understanding of - methods for making / constructing rugs, why certain methods are better, long lasting, and more expensive. Hand knotted vs "hand tufted" (note the quotes) vs machine loomed, etc. - materials and pros and cons of each: natural (silk, wool, cotton, jute, etc) polypropylene, "bamboo silk" etc). And natural vegetable dyes v synthetic dyes. - care of rugs, including types of rug pads and why--note that some pads will discolor your floor. Also rotating rugs, protecting from sun damage, avoiding rotary head vacuums. - modern v ancient traditions of rug making vs faux and knock offs (eg hand knotted Asian and middle eastern and indigenous / tribal patterns and styles v fake copy-cat stuff that prints a pattern on, faux antiques, etc.) - how to choose a rug based on how you'll use it, where it will be in your home (eg high traffic entry; drop-risk dining room; low-risk bedroom) - how to choose a style, color and pattern and why--and what to avoid, when, and why. I always start my online marketplace and resale searches with "knotted rug" because I'm pretty sure this will only bring up the highest quality rugs. I might also toss in "wool rug," because not everyone selling their grandparents' kick-azz antique hand knotted tribal rugs will know enough about them to advertise them as knotted. But wool rugs might be tufted, and these aren't as good as knotted. Also, some Etsy sellers can trick buyers into thinking they're buying a hand knotted rug, rug w veg dyes, a silk v "silk" rug, and so on, so keeping eyes peeled for how to tell what's what is also good. IMO. :) One of the best pieces of advice I got from a designer was in helping to make my small living room feel larger. She pointed out that rugs w a border pattern, especially a high-contrast border pattern, and a central medallion pull the eye in and make the area feel smaller (good for open floor plans needing space definition). A rug with a pattern that spills off the edge with no border, or a rug with a low-contrast almost imperceptible border pattern helps pull the eye out, making the space feel larger. Also, keep in mind that pretty much every rug can be cut to size. If the manufacturer can't do it, then take it to a reputable rug cleaning and repair shop. They can cut to your size specifications and bind the cut edge(s) for you. Great if you want max coverage (just buy a rug a size too big and have one or two edges trimmed) or a very specific location and size in mind. I have high end hand knotted and low end machine rugs in my home. I know which ones I strongly prefer :) but I can't always get what I wa-aant*. That's life. :) But it helps to know what to look for! You'll know when you found a crazy amazing deal, and you'll know what's never worth your money--something better will inevitably come along. *Rolling Stones

    Thanks for this detailed comment! I was considering a medallion style rug with a big border for my living room, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why I thought it would look bad, even though the rug itself is gorgeous. Pulling the eye in, and making the room feel smaller is the perfect way to describe it! I'm on the hunt for a pattern that "runs off" the rug now. Thank you!

    I should say I am *not* an expert. I grew up w parents who delighted in traditional rug making with ancient roots, especially in Asia and the Middle East, as well as indigenous rug making in the Americas such as Navaho rugs. So what I learned, I learned through osmosis, and spending lots of time as a kid climbing around on giant piles of rugs at "oriental rug galleries" and so on. These ancient knotting and weaving techniques are still the best in the world, and high end modern carpets use these techniques too. So there are loooooots of rabbit holes you can go down! I might start with search terms ["hand knotted" "tufted" "machine made" rug] as a first step to learn some basics about manufacturing, which is higher quality, and why.

    "gabbeh" is a type of Persian rug, actually! it's the name of the style of rug. I'd recommend that anyone interested in this kind of rug should try to find sellers from Iran! usually, the quality is much higher and its on the lower end of the cost spectrum

    Always contact the vendor and ask what kind of wool the rug is made from. If the wool is from New Zealand, England, or Ghazni wool from Afghanistan, it's high quality. If the wool is from India or Pakistan, it is likely poor quality. I've found that Golden Nile usually has very good deals on high quality oriental rugs

    My secret to getting any “higher end” box store rug, is getting the clearance floor models or seasonal clearance. One of my most recent scores was a hand tufted wool Crate and Barrel rug 9x12 that I only paid $150 for. It was a floor model and only needed to be vacuumed, 2k rug for Pennies basically.

    I bought the plain wool Arvin Olano rug in fawn and it's so so good. Very plush and the way it's woven gives it a slight pattern so it doesn't look like boring carpet. My dogs just tracked mud on it this morning and it wiped right up. If you're on the fence, definitely get it! I also have to say that the new plush rugs from Ruggable are great too. I have a 9x12 from the AD collection and it's my favorite rug in the house.

    I've been hyper fixating on rugs for the last week so this is great timing lol. The other day I ordered a very large hand knotted wool rug on etsy I've been looking at for a year, excited to get it. It won't be as thick as I like but I did decide in this one instance since I loved it so much, I'd make a sacrifice there. I've been looking for a whole year and didn't find anything I loved as much for my loft area. Ive actually been thinking about getting one of Arvins rugs for my livingroom as well, the brick coloured one. They look so thick and the subtle colour varitations in the solid rug is beautiful.

    If I could afford those rugs, I’d totally buy one! Also, your hinge profile is awesome… I feel like it represents you really well

    Also, if you are lucky enough to have a good carpet/flooring store in your area, they have a vast selection of carpets you can customize for size. (Not box stores) They include wool, silk, blends, solids, textures and beautiful prints. Also machine made that are affordable and also unique. I’m on the rug hunt now-thanks for the video and leg work.

    I found a brand new Ralph Lauren Persian style area rug at Ross for $179 to fill up the dining room at my mom’s house. I found it by accident and had to get it because it was too good of a deal to pass on. You’d be very surprised what you can find at these discount stores if you know how to hunt for good deals (discount home stores, flea markets, estate sales, ebay and other online marketplaces, etc).
