How To Escape Poverty - 'Is Your Thinking Keeping You Poor?' - Professional Speaker Douglas Kruger

Professional speaker & business author Douglas Kruger addresses a group of South African university students on the topic of poverty, entrepreneurship, and important differences in mindset between rich and poor, and how they can use these mind-set shifts to grow their careers. He explores the futility of relying on government, the importance of being your own boss, and the inherited baggage that can keep good people in generational cycles of poverty.

    43:41 This almost brought me to tears. After my 6th business flopped, my so called friends and family made fun of me and kicked me mercilessly when I was down. I’m on entrepreneurial venture number 7 now and this one is starting to reap high returns after 6 months. I hope anyone reading this knows that entrepreneurship is not for the weak. If you going through hell right now, keep going! Edit: This comment really blew up and I’m so thankful for all the kind words. I hope you all succeed and I’ve been documenting my entire journey.

    Age 10-18, I was in school questioning why I was being taught things that had no purpose in my life. After high school graduation, I go to college, and I'm still learning random things like math and sociology (things that don't relate to my goals). During college, I started a business at 19, after 4 months of hard work, I started making money. I had enrolled in a marketing class...thinking "finally, a topic that will actually help with my goals!". The teacher had never started a business, yet she was trying to teach me about business. So I dropped out, it was the most logical choice and it was my single biggest financial decision I've ever made. Instead of paying tens of thousands in student loans, I instead only spent hundreds to thousands on my business (far less risky) and was able to not only learn, but get experience + results. I even applied for a marketing job, and all the other applicants had their fancy degrees, yet I was hired. Why? Because I had made over 6 figures at 21 all by myself, without a degree. That was far more valuable than any resume sentence.

    I would say that the best why to escape poverty I learned from a few persons I met at a shelter and from a few life experiences; learn to acquire trust from other people by not fearing to express yourself sincerely and to past judgement on others but try your best not to be offensive, dare to believe in friendship and be willing to prove yourself in every way that life grants you and don't take anything for granted. And don't ever forget your ID and prioritize your identification just in case a job comes along and do your best regardless if your pay is minimum wage and get enough sleep and think positive thoughts and never wish any one wrong and if you feel every envy make it the feeling obvious so you may wake consciousness in those around you.

    One of the most eye-opening and "Aha!" moment videos I've seen / listened to. I remember visiting a friend's family and having dinner with them and her parents discussing financials at the dinner table and how much to save, invest, use for expenses, etc and I remember being in awe. My family never discussed financials with me and only when I struggled and asked for help (usually when I was really struggling) I was told to simply save, not work another job; just save. But then again, you can't ask someone who's never built a life for themselves outside of a 9-5 how to build a life for yourself outside of a 9-5! Thank you Doug for this speech. It's hit home in so many ways. I am grateful.

    Best speech I’ve ever heard. I shared it with my son who is in the USA NAVY as my gift to him. Wish those people in the audience, showed more interest, respect to this speaker. He has nothing to lose; he is just trying to help the lower class succeed, think like a rich and achieve goals. I know it’s not that easy, as I’m myself NOT even close to Rich! Lol , I do do , strongly valued , and was glued to this great advise of wisdom. All I can say is, those people ( Majority) the audience, showed zero interest and it’s why the poor will always be poor. No ambition, too comfortable with getting a welfare check and having 10 kids for the taxes n please; no offense. If you find yourself in need of assistance, due to no job, no other sources, disabled... etc is acceptable; but I’ve met young women, having babies just for a check n their taxes at the end of the year. Gee, I am waiting for a law to allow me , claim my two dogs. ! It can get expensive. Keep in mind, again... I’m a simple mother with some college and a husband who works hard n things get tight, even bringing home a nice salary. But truth is, this is nothing but the truth. The new generation don’t want to aim for success. Often settling for a mediocre job and is all from generation to generation. As for me? Fortunate to see my peers with professional careers, but man?! None of us are rich?! Lmfao . Good speech! Is a tough world man to strike it rich, but we must teach our kids to aim higher. God bless us all.

    I LOVE THIS! The first few minutes are so true about the mentality we have towards wealth in this country. People here are afraid of wanting more out of life. I love that you made the reference to God wanting us to be productive and multiply all that He gives us. But the mentality in the south African church (especially the mixed-race or predominantly white churches like the one I'm in) is cultivating complacency. The minuet you hint at wanting a bit more than you earn currently someone will quickly quote "Seek ye first the kingdom of God...". In trying to avoid preaching a prosperity gospel, our churches are teaching us that it's okay to be poor and I just don't see how that glorifies God.

    Hi, I'm now thinking about putting myself out there to see what I can achieve. Like most people, I only learnt about getting high education and hoping for better job offers to be successful in my life. But now I'm beginning to see life in a different light. I want to start an internet business. I am a bit uncomfortable about putting myself out there but I hope this works. This video has really motivated me. All the best guys.

  • @CuriousCritter9

    @CuriousCritter9

    His speaking skills are good, yes, but he says a lot of rubbish. It's captivating for those who don't think for themselves. A small part of what he says is healthy and makes sense (such as seeing the dentist as a helper and not an authority, and trying again if you fail), but most of it doesn't. He is a master manipulator, and that's how he earns his money. One of the main things he is leaving out is how absolutely dependent we are on people who do work in low-end jobs that pay very little. And the less they are paid, the richer we are and the more power we have. So what he is really talking about is *how to exploit other people*, and *how to be the exploiter* and how not to be one of those who get exploited. But he very conveniently leaves out how totally dependent we are on those who are exploited. Like for instance how the West is totally dependent on exploting low-wage countries. Or how we depend on someone in a low-paying job to make our lunch at the local deli. That's why we're rich. We have the power to exploit. So trying to become rich is no solution. That creates a society where some exploit the others, and the others, who do very important but low-paid work, are even being blamed for being exploited, as they could just listen to his advice and become rich. But by definition of the word rich, everyone can't be rich. You are only rich because someone else is not; that's what "rich" means. It's like he's saying that everybody can just become rich. But no, everybody can't. Society would break down. So the societal logic simply doesn't add up if you really think for yourself. And that's why many criticize those who drive a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce. They realize that that person is an exploiter. A lot of people were actually exploited making those cars. Why not at least use that work force for something more meaningful than a car that uses a lot of resources and even pollutes a lot? What people are saying is "be modest, drive a car that can simply get you from A to B, and use the money for something good for the society instead". And that's a good thing. I could go on and on about how he manipulates and doesn't speak about the whole picture, but I think you get the idea. But yes, his speaking skills are good, he is a master manipulator, and you can see in this comment section that so many fall for it.

  • @quinnstastic

    @quinnstastic

    @@CuriousCritter9 very interesting! Thanks for the comment. I understand what you are saying, and in a way yes... There has to be someone quote on quote exploiting someone or something else. However... I'd invite you to consider that at any one time the people who become rich from bieng poor which to my current understanding makes up for over half of the richer tax bracket have also done their fair share of bieng "exploited" themselves. For example a college student who gets the opportunity to work a menial low paid job in order to stay at college. Now he/she is greatful for the opportunity to work and be able to stay in college to one day get a degree and start a higher paying job and move up the ladder of wealth. So what I'm basically saying is the disparity of wealth and exploitation is a recycling act and in most cases, but obviously not so much in 3rd world countries and so forth, but definitely it's the case in the western world

By the way, if you can be honest with yourself, you can admit that all of us ARE exploiters in one way or the other. You can call it an "escapee" but...before THAT happens, we are all, exploiters :-)

    E1: resenting the wealthy says more about yourself then about the wealthy. Don’t buy into that thinking. They’re not a different species. E2: three thing that money is not. Not the root of all evil. It’s not embarrassing, it amplifies you so what are you? It’s not finite or limited, expand and contribute. It adds to the system. Bring your talents upfront. GROW the entire pool. You are needed. E3: represent yourself. Read outliers. Speak, ask the right questions, everyone in your circle is a resource so collaborate. The world is not the authority. E4: inspired ideas. As you build your career act on them. Take chances. Ask. Speak. Act. Don’t be a cog in the system. Say it w your chest and represent yourself well. E5: Leaving the ranks of the poor. With your knowledge and wisdom could you start from zero again and build to get back? The gap is in your mind. It can be done. Leave before you get depressed based on those who you are around. You’re the average of your closest 5 people your around. We all average each other out. Associate with high level individuals, mentors and friends E6: is your state keeping you poor? E7: your positioning determines your payscale. You can be outearned by someone less greater. Known outearns unknown. You need to be the icon, celebrity, go to person, bring personality, bring humanity, speak well, seductive. Knowledge isn’t everything. IT isn’t valuable. Be different, be known. The Economy tomorrow will be run by ppl who have BAs and the ability to be creative. Radio, media. E8: Don’t fixate on the bottom line. Put 80% of your energy on generating more income and 20% on focusing on saving. Hunters (go get more) vs. Bean counters (who focus on conserving). It doesn’t matter how much you save if you don’t have more cash flow. E9: Risky is the new safe, safe is the new risky. The only people who are wealthy are their own bosses. Ex. You try 10 ideas, 8 fail and 2 succeed. Repeat until you have multiple streams of income. Risk aversion- they’ve went bankrupt 3x and. They give themselves the permission to fail. They give others the permission to laugh at them. They give others permission to mock them. Give yourself the space and leeway. BE KIND TO YOURSELF. The only think that separates you by your goals is by a number of actions.

    You've just gutted me. I knew all this already. In my brain, I knew it. And, yet, the way you said it made me finally connect some dots and come to a flood of tears. I finally actually faced it. I am selling my time. Just today I was asked to come to work, on a sunday, one of my days off. I didn't and I was feeling guilty, as if dooms day was upon me. Why? You answered it in the right moment. My throat has been clogging day after day after day. I've been suffocating and I hadn't yet understood why. I still thought I needed to give more... How twisted is that? It seem my body is finally asking me to change the game. My body. Not my mind. It's my body issuing notices... And you stepped in to make me put it all together. Now "I just" have to figure out how to work that curve. I thought I was doing it already. Guilt and tears say otherwise. Let's see where I get from here now. But I know this: you've made a huge impact. Me watching this video is one of those moments that made a memory. I KNOW it's a turning point. So thank you. Thank you for being on Earth and for your mission. You've touched my life. It was 45 minutes of change. 🙏
