Great tutorial! Thank you! I especially appreciate your emphasis on what I, as an artist, call, "progressive commitment"--That is, starting out with a light outline, and then gradually moving toward a deeper engraving as you progress. That concept, alone, will help a lot of people avoid a lot of unnecessary grief.

Hey Jared, thank you brother! I got my Pro-Cut stuff at “SEATTLE FINDINGS Jewelry Supplies and Tools”. This was a local place where I got it from. Maybe they have good shipping rates. Otherwise I heard Amazon has some but they are around $10 on there. Seattle Findings is selling theirs for $4.95, but I bet shipping will bring it up to $10 range, so if you have Amazon Prime it might be worth getting it there.
Bad ass work man, I’m trying engraving now but I have a pen dremel. What burs can I get that will cut deep into the slide of a gun?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Juan! You got the Stylo? You have to use industrial strength burrs, otherwise they won’t work. I got mine at Grainger store online. You pay a lot for shipping but it’s well worth it. I believe I included the part number in my description, if not check out my slide video it should be in that one.
Very cool. What shape is the bur? Ball bur?
@TriadoCustomEngraving

Thank you, yes it’s a ball bur.
Do you use a dust mask? I use one when I'm doing wood, I'm sure it's the same for metal...
@TriadoCustomEngraving
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have a 3M one that I usually use. It gets dusty when you engrave with a diamond point bur more than carbide, probably because it takes out chunks of metal instead of sanding it.
Sweet outcome🤩 where did you purchase this bur
@TriadoCustomEngraving
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Oscar! Got at Grainger Industrial Supply. I included the part number in the description.
Is it hard to do this on smaller knives like a switch knife?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
11 ай бұрын
Anything with a fine detail will definitely take longer and be a little more intricate, but it’s definitely doable if you use the right tool. I would suggest practicing on similar bare metal before you start engraving any knives, this way if you mess up it’s not a big deal.
do you go with the spin or against it? how much speed ?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
5 ай бұрын
Good question because it depends on what you’re trying to do. For outlines and detail work I would go with the spin. Filling in an area larger than a line I would go against to get a better cut. You get a deeper cut going against the spin but you do have a chance to slip or jump the bur while you’re doing it. You can add a few passes going with the spin to make it deeper, all depends on your comfort level with your tool and your bur.
would it make sense to use marker and the words as a stencil rather than carbon paper?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
10 ай бұрын
I mean if you have a stencil for that specific font then yes
Great tutorial. What size and shape of burrs did you use for this projects and? Thanks Ray
@TriadoCustomEngraving

Thank you Ray! The bur that I used is classified as SD-40 Carbide Bur and I got it at grainger.com and P/N: 6KJE3. It’s the smallest that I could find for the job. Hope this helps.

@@TriadoCustomEngraving Ok. Any other Burrs you would recommend buying. I’m in the process of making a small jewelry box made of Micarta or Richlite. I want to engrave raised engraving on the miniature box. I thought of using a cnc, but that costs to much.
@TriadoCustomEngraving
Жыл бұрын
@@raymercado3650 Very interesting Ray, I haven’t really messed too much with other materials other than metal so it will be hard to gauge what type of bur you would need. I would guess that a Diamond bur would work well on it, just by looking at some pictures of this material online. I would suggest maybe grabbing some scrap pieces and try different types of burs on it before you try to engrave anything on the box itself. Best of luck!
@raymercado3650
Жыл бұрын
@@TriadoCustomEngraving Will do, Thanks. What are your favourite Burrs when you engrave Stainless? Sizes? Ray
@TriadoCustomEngraving
Жыл бұрын
@@raymercado3650 I primarily use Fox Germany tungsten carbide burs for my painted cups like the Yeti. Stainless steel by itself I used Dremel bur 9905 and it worked pretty good for stippling. The only thing about it is that it’s too thick for detail work so that’s where I used that grainger bur that I initially talked about. It’s a little smaller and it’s a tough tungsten carbide bur. Fox Germany burs are meant for jewelry work so I would not recommend it using it on stainless, unless you’re looking to just scratch the surface. I’m still learning as I go and try different burs out and see what I like best, and so far none of the burs that are cheap work the way you want them to work so if you see a price tag of $11 for one bur, that’s normal. You get what you pay for I guess.
I have a question. What is the font lettering called? Great video by the way!
@TriadoCustomEngraving
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ricardo thank you! It’s an Old English font but I don’t remember the exact name of this one.
What's the difference with using a pneumatic engraver vs hammer and chisel?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
Жыл бұрын
I don’t own either of those tools so I cannot say. My guess would be pneumatic is much easier since it eliminates use of the hammer. Although it might be more expensive than the traditional hammer and chisel approach.
are diamond dremel bits better than tungsten carbide bits?
@TriadoCustomEngraving
Жыл бұрын
All depends on what you’re trying to engrave. Tungsten carbide cannot engrave glass but diamond can. Stainless steel or metal will ware out the diamond bur in less than a minute, but tungsten carbide will get the job done.
Dang that's cool! I would be afraid to engrave Arya's Dagger and mess it up
@TriadoCustomEngraving
3 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah man engraving $300 dagger can definitely be scary. I tend to not think about how much it costs and that seemed to help.
Curious...if it's 440 stainless, it's softer than heat treated high carbon steel, in which case it would be easier to engrave. I don't think engraving high carbon is as doable with a rotary tool.
@TriadoCustomEngraving
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, good question! I’m not really sure what type of steel it was. It was definitely hard to engrave and took about 5 passes per line to get it deep enough to my liking. This is my third knife engraving and I usually just do scales so this is definitely new to me and I want to learn more about it. And you’re right, it’s hard to do with a rotary tool, pneumatic engraver would be prefect for this.
Was that stencil pre-cut ?
