How to end fear of the dentist | Sharonne Zaks | TEDxSydney

Dr Sharonne Zaks is on a mission to transform the way dentistry is practised, enhancing the connection and joy for both patients and dentists. The mouth is especially vulnerable, and finding novel ways to give power back to patients with care and compassion offers benefits far beyond fixing teeth. This is particularly meaningful for patients for whom power has been abused in the past. Dr Sharonne Zaks is not your average dentist/musician. She has over 20 years of experience in private practice in Melbourne and regional Victoria, with a special focus on anxious and phobic patients, and survivors of sexual assault and trauma. Sharonne’s new approach is drawn from trauma informed care, her clinical experience and other research. The free video resources she made are being used to empower survivors and to train dentists locally and internationally.
Combining her passions, Sharonne created the dental cabaret ‘Gobsmacked; a celebration of the mouth’ to help make flossing more sexy and appealing to teenagers and adults. She completed an advanced diploma of music and has played the piano and trumpet in bands at venues and music festivals around Australia for many years. Her band Madre Monte supported The Cat Empire on their national tour. Sharonne has also performed in the Melbourne international comedy festival and fringe festivals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I cried thru this whole video. I'm a childhood trauma survivor and had a terrible experience at a dental office today where I was basically brushed off and told I would be ok ... we do this all the time. I went from nervous to over drive anxiety attack in seconds. She didn't care ... they had zero sedation available. Told me I had this procedure done before... well yes I said but I WAS SEDATED. I left in tears, still in pain, and upset all day.

Dentists are truly amazing people. They care more about their patients than any other industry and are generally very kind people. Ive had to get a tooth filling done and was very scared leading up to the operation. Turns out that the dentist and his assistant were very lovely individuals that took the steps necessary to comfort me on every part of the journey. It was quickly apparent to me how intelligent they are. Its unfortunate that they bear such a stressful and demanding jobs.

I felt the same at one point but as I watched the video, I got a sense of validation. I related to the woman, the patient in the story. After I watched the video, I left for my dentist appt which I had been dreading for a week. After the dentist sat down next to me. I told him I watched a video about trauma patients relating to dentistry. He looked surprised. I told him I wanted to share my fears "very" briefly, not bc I didn't want to waste his time but bc I didn't want to scare him away. As I was speaking tears rolled down my cheeks but I got out what I felt was important. I then mentioned I had a game plan for the way I wanted my procedure to go. Things like, if I raise my right hand, this means I need a break. He agreed and seemed to appreciate the energy I invested in my care.. He also talked to me thru the whole thing which helped too . I felt empowered for the first time in the chair. Meditation has also helped.

@@calligirlg5788 wow that’s incredible! I’ve had so many traumatizing dentist experiences when I was little And I went to the same dentist for years, which I hated. They were always painful experiences, which the dentist would numb me, yet I still felt all the pain from the drill and he wasn’t very gentle either. Definitely also not kid friendly. I was terrified. For 3 years from when I was 11 to almost 15 I tried so hard to avoid going. I had major tooth pain, which I didn’t tell my parents about and simply took ibuprofen and dealt with it instead. Now I have to get a root canal on that tooth. But anyway, after 3 years (just a few months ago) my mom took me to a different dentist. I moved a few years ago and it turns out we live so close to an amazing office. I went there, the hygienist was very nice and gentle, the dentist himself was very nice and even though that was only a checkup, he still explained everything before doing it, which I appreciate since before that, I hated that I felt no control and have a fear of the unknown. Turns out, I have many cavities after 3 years. I got 2 filled last month and I’m going back this coming week. The dentist is incredible. He Made sure I was comfortable the whole time. I didn’t even feel anything when he injected the anesthesia. And he was keeping me updated the whole time. Overall, a good dentist can definitely help with a fear or deal with trauma!

I was never afraid of the dentist until my wisdom teeth trauma three years ago . I am generally fairly tolerant for procedures that involve pain . I’ve had far too many needles to count . However , I draw the line at any processes that involve massive blood loss and severe wounds . Wisdom teeth falls into that category. I as a person who had avoided stitches since kindergarten had to be cut from bottom to top of mouth for each of the two wisdom teeth . In addition I suffered long term repercussions to my jaw joint and neck muscles after each surgery . That wasn’t due to medical error but perhaps due to the invasiveness of the procedure and generalized bad luck . It took me two years to resume regular dental checks and cleanings after that trauma . I have not experienced any more wisdom teeth pain from my remaining wisdom tooth and I hope it never happens again . If it does I will be insisting on a specialist referral and blood or bone grafts to prevent dry sockets. My dental clinic is good for the small things but not for wisdom teeth .

I would love to bring EFT tapping into this environment - it would make it easier for both patients and dentists to have a simple tool they can use that helps to process anxieties and fears quickly. The same acupressure tapping technique is wonderful with trauma too but that would be more appropriate to address with an EFT practitioner beforehand.

I like this except for the part about being reimbursed for the extra time it takes with these patients. You'll find that in any one on one profession. It wouldn't make me feel any better that I'd be thinking in the surgeons mind this extra time is taking too long for something I won't get paid for. I feel like dentists and surgeons make fantastic money. Guaranteed money in most cases as well. Unliike many doctors. This should be a huge part of why they are dentists. To help people. And not so much about the money. Which is a lot.
