Without Teeth | Sree Koka | TEDxBocaRaton

A life without teeth is a life of limitations and the resultant mental and physical scars can be daunting to overcome. Although replacing missing teeth opens up new possibilities, how should someone choose the way that is best given the myriad of treatment choices? What kind of conversation should take place between patient and clinician? What questions should a patient even be asking and what information should a dentist be sharing? If you ever end up with no teeth, where would you start your journey? Sreenivas Koka is a dentist specialist in prosthodontics - that field of dentistry that focuses on replacing missing teeth using dental implants and different kinds of dental prostheses. He has a CV filled with a constellation of academic and clinical accomplishments that are carefully selected and extolled here to make him look good: He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry at the age of 22; he also has an MS in Prosthodontics (Michigan), a PhD in Medical Sciences (Nebraska) and an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management. He is currently the interim Chair of Restorative Dentistry at UCLA and a Clinical Professor in Advanced Prosthodontics at Loma Linda University. In previous years, he has been the Chairman of Dental Specialties and Professor of Dentistry at the world famous Mayo Clinic, the President of the Academy of Prosthodontics, and has published over 100 scientific manuscripts and book chapters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

To the world, Teresa is my sister and there's so much more to her story, than this video shares. All though, I am very grateful to Sree Koka for sharing my sister's experience, in hopes of helping other's with similar situations. Teresa is thriving in her life now and finally realizes she is significant. She now has her dream job as Marketing & Event Coordinator for the San Diego Futures Project. Thank you to all who watched the video ❤

Why am I crying after watching his talk 😭 My front teeth that have been removed affects my life. I get bullied because of it, by my friends, classmates, strangers and even my professors. There are times that the professor ask me to stand in our class and he make me as an example of advertising a toothpaste, everyone's laughing, it sucks. When I discover what I want to, my dreams, my goals . . . I said to myself you can't achieve neither of those not because I can't make it but because people will kill my mentality, they won't stop discriminating, mocking me, bullying me, and yeah i'm already done... Just wanna end this life

Denture? I'm 35 and just got a full upper denture. My mom's teeth were bad and she handed them along to me. She told me her biggest regret was waiting so long, so I just went ahead and did mine because teeth don't heal. Mine were already loose from bone loss and advanced periodontal disease 😔

I'm bed the night before getting the rest of my teeth extracted in the morning, wondering how hard it's going to be to speak and if I'll be able to get dentures made before my birthday in a month. Having already had the bottom teeth removed earlier in the month the pain wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, tho I like to think that I also have a higher pain threshold than the average person. I fought like he'll to preserve my teeth but upon getting out of the Air Force with no dental coverage they just kept deteriorating despite my efforts till I ended up giving up. Now I'm rated 100% disabled by the VA and have dental coverage now. But the VAs system is abysmal. The first person I spoke with just had this disdainful attitude towards me. I asked about same day dentures and she was all like we don't just have dentures lying around to hand out. Half a month later moments before the extraction process started the doctor said oh we can do samenday dentures but you have to set that up in advanced. I was infuriated and couldn't afford to wait any longer. The xray of my head a complete horror show with how much bone loss I was suffering. I glimpsed my own demise that day and it still lingers in my mind. It's ridiculous trying to get an appointment through the VA and they don't do waiting lists. Forcing me to call every day hoping to find an earlier date. I want to have dentures before my birthday when I'll be with family again, Amd can't the idea of being seen without teeth. I'll likely end up having to drop money I don't have to get the dentures on my time frame and not the space available system with the VA. The more I research my condition the more treatments I find that they should have been willing to offer me. That they didn't tells me they plan to give me the absolute least amount of effort possible on the longest time frame imaginable, and if I never went back to them again they would not give me a second thought. My Last remaining hope is to eventually be able to get a secondary set of dentures that are more exciting, something to bring some fun to the Halloween season which I've not been able to participate in for many years now. If I have to use teeth that aren't mybown, why can't they be something more cosmetically exciting?

I make 13.25 a hour working for a hotel front desk but after taxes and child support... I only take home 8$ and hr bearly able to keep my head above water... I'm not gonna lie I am no saint. I have never graduated high school or been one of the cool kids with Rich parents or born with a silver spoon in my mouth... I got into drugs. Believed friendships and the moment where worth more then getting made fun of in school... Numb was better then torment... I ended up in prison and got out I was mostly alone and untrusted... No money, no friends and no place to go... My health and my life was going nowhere fast.... Fast forward to today... I have had all my teeth removed when I was on state covered insurance and offered immediate dentures at the time not know I would have to pay full price for a permit set..... Or that implants would be better in the long run and the whole cost of everything well during my healing process I got a job and was able to support my self... Here I am 5yrs later still eating soft food and using the top immediate denture... Because I am not rich and runied my credit when I thought other people where more important then myself.... I don't know what to do besides suffer and take another 5yrs to save and hope no emergency comes up, because knowing my luck only way this problem will get solved is either if I am dead or win the lottery..... And I'm not lucky in any way...... I was once told if I didn't have bad luck I have no luck at all lol.... One love 🔺

A lot of positive, motivational speak, but, dentistry hasn't advanced much. If one loses all of one's teeth, there are two opions, either dentures or implants (all of 4 or 6). Or a hybrid of the two. If one goes with dentures, that doesn't cure the bone loss and one ends up with a sulken granny face. With implants, food gets under them, complications... it's not a bed of roses. I have dental problems now and i am considering suicide. Hate presentations like this that coat over the inadequacies of "modern" dentistry.

The slow progress of dentistry is very frustrating, for sure! I have dental problems too, and not enough money to fix everything. I have read that research is progressing into being able to cause new teeth to grow. It's a real thing. Just a few more years, and they think they can do it. Meanwhile, please stick around - there is only one you. The world will seriously lack without you. You make the world a better place by being your unique self in it, by little things you do for others, by sharing your stories, by listening when others want to share theirs. Your love will make someone's day this week. Nobody ever wants someone to kill themself - please know that your friends and associates want you around! For me, having Jesus as Savior and Lord keeps me going. We all feel discouraged at various times in this life - it's often disappointing or frustrating - sometimes very hard. Well, I find that our feelings come and go, but that if we hang on for enough time, the problems tend to work themselves out, and things tend to get better. That's my prayer for you!

You missed-out on the most important aspect of your subject! Do you realize the cost of dentistry? $$$$$. Dentistry ought to be included on Medicare! When will the Government of Canada and the American Government wake-up - to reality.! European countries are way ahead of America... France, Italy , England, Belgium, Denmark etc. Dental-care in on Medicare! Whereas, the US and Canada being the richest countries in the WORLD! Shameful! Do think about this fact dear folks ; When voting- time comes around, rally and demand that dentistry be included!
