NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of dental health. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
In this entertaining and informative talk, recorded at TEDxEustis 2020, Dr. Charles Reinertsen unveils a surprising connection between oral health and leading causes of death. Using humor, Dr. Chuck reveals how your dirty mouth may be causing other health issues and details the methods available to address this alarming issue.
Dr. Chuck Reinertsen’s specialty is the mouth, but his interest extends to the rest of the body. A Eustis resident since graduating from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1979, Dr. Chuck is on a mission to expand awareness of the relationship between oral health and whole-body wellness. As he says, “Many times the source of your disease is right under your nose…literally!” He’s a member of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health, and his goal is to develop professional relationships between physicians and dentists. Physicians rarely ask about the health of your mouth, yet the same blood that goes through any dental infection like gum disease, picks up bacteria and transfers them throughout the entire body, from the heart to the brain. It's time to connect the dots between the mouth and the rest of the body and include the mouth when evaluating a persons illness. Many times the source of the disease is literally right under your nose!

Amen!! I am going through this right now. For 3 years now. Well, longer really more like 15 years. Everything only got 100x worse after I got Covid April 2021. Jan 2024 and I’m still suffering from debilitating symptoms. I kept telling my husband over these past few years, I just want to get to the root cause. Well, the root cause just so happened to be my root canals! Crazy how it seems eventually we start to figure things out. I had to figure all this out on my own. No Dr has helped me over the past 3 years, and I’ve seen plenty! Medical and Dental do need to get it together. They really should be together, as one can’t function without the other!

So if dental health is so important to one’s overall health, why isn’t it part of medical insurance? Dental insurance is not offered by many employers & the CHIP program is only if you have neither… makes no sense!

It really is a shame! They are keeping us sick on purpose. I’ve had weird sinus congestion symptoms for years before I got Covid in April 2021. It’s now Jan 2024 and I’m still suffering with “Long Covid”. I have debilitating fatigue some days, others I feel really good. Mostly it’s my respiratory tho. My husband and I used to hike. I can barely get up a flight of stairs now. I’m only 42! 😔😭 I haven’t been able to work for over two years now. I just applied for SSDI reluctantly because I was really hoping to go back to work. This has really ruined my life. Thank God for my sweet husband who has helped me through this and is standing beside me in all my endeavors to get better. I have just discovered this information about the oral health link 2 months ago! I wish I knew all of this information years ago! I swear they are killing us on purpose! I found a Biological Dentist who has already pulled one root canal tooth and taken out a mercury filling. I have two more root canals to be pulled that are pushed up into my sinuses. No wonder I have for 15 years suffered from nasal/congesion issues and allergies! There’s been an infection in there for years. They will need to put me under to extract the two teeth and clean out my sinuses. I am hoping to start feeling a little better after all this.

I have been suffering for headache and shoulder pains for a long time. I tried going to different docs and even physical therapist. When I went to my dentist she told me have temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) concern. I had to wear dental splint and bracket for more than a year + sessions with my dentist for therapy. It was clearly a dental concern.

Most dentist are not there to prevent and educate unfortunately but to treat. From childhood until old age. From natural tooth to third teeth this is how the money is made... And in the general medicine, there is no holistic view. Each treats their own area that's my understanding. So suing as you suggest may be useless as this is how the system is set up.

Dental hygienists are the solution. They educate to prevent both oral and systemic diseases, which we now know are not separate so we call them “oral-systemic diseases.” Good healthcare systems employ dental hygienists to help patients prevent problems through education, oral hygiene instruction, and referrals to good dentists who are oral-systemic minded. The world is changing!

I have taken a decision to promote mouth and teeth hygien campaign for the less privileged because I know how it is not to have access to tooth brush and tooth paste as a child. I have been there myself and not everyone will have an opportunity to dental implants in future they are not cheap at all.

@@newtonmoonjust like it’s not the job of a heart surgeon to prevent heart disease, it’s not a dentist’s role to prevent oral disease. That is the role of a dental hygienist. Good healthcare systems employ RDHs to educate their patients and providers on oral-systemic health and refer those who need treatment to a good oral-systemically minded dental office. Dentists are specialists who treat disease. RDHs are the primary care provider of oral-systemic disease. They are educated and licensed. They save lives every day!

Now, I could barely even imagine how does it feels like to have a good dental health and yet a good mental health. Suffering from dental discomforts everyday, the only time I could rest if I am asleep or I am distracted. What is holding me back to let this be over, not letting me work normally and pressure by expense.

He is exactly correct as physicians commonly overlook the mouth as to both mental and physical health. I’m going to explain why below. The funniest thing is leading head researcher of dentistry back in the 1920’s & 1930’s was Weston A Price and studying 14 different countries recognized the differences immediately with isolated primitive people eating foraged, fished, hunted, trapped foods or by healthy organic farming practices compared to modernized people subsisting on modern foods like refined white flour & white sugar products, canned goods, jellies and jams. In studying these isolated people they never once brushed or flossed their teeth!! Dental arches were perfect and were free of disease or facial deformity. They had pearl white teeth without EVER flossing or brushing? Why ? Read Mark Breiner’s book: Whole Body Dentistry and when you are stress free and eating your native traditional diet osmosis or fluid flow starts from inside and around the jawbone and flows through the ligaments into the roots of the dentin tubules of the teeth. This fluid flow eventually comes out by starting from inside the central part of every tooth outwards . So in essence from inside the dentin tubules and comes out of the teeth. You need proper hydration also for it to be more effective. So in stark contrast when you eat poorly reverse osmosis occurs whereby fluid flow is backwards by constantly trying to go from the outside of the tooth inward. So STRESS and POOR DIET cause this. Read his book: Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. What he is talking about Price wrote in his study regarding Focal Point Infection so a infected tooth goes to organs , tissues, bones disrupting health. He was experimenting with like rabbits and would put infected teeth of humans and implanted in the rabbit to which the rabbit would get a similar health ailment or affliction as the human. Price’s written work: 1) Nutrition and Physical Degeneration 2) Dental Infections Oral & Systemic Dental Infections and the Degenerative Diseases Both are two volumes Pioneers of this work are: 1) Weston A Price 2) Edward C Rosenhow 3) Charles Mayo 4) Martin H Fisher

I believe, both professions collude to allow encourage each other to get rich. Too much drive to make money hinders the honesty in both professionals - Doctors. Dentists. Some Dentists are not honest. They do not tell you that "Vital" gut bacteria is affected by drugs given for combating bacteria in abscess infections. Doctors in a different manner dealing with the drugs prescribed do not tell you or counsel you that polishing or sharpening your pencil with understanding nutrition is the best way to go. Prevention. Prevention. Prevention. Before ailments manifest themselves. Does either Professional do this? Very rarely. But the list is growing with many who are catching on to the understanding of Nutrition directly affects the body . Physicians rarely ask about the health of your mouth, yet the same blood that goes through any dental infection like gum disease, picks up bacteria and transfers them throughout the entire body, from the heart to the brain. The next time you go to either doctor or dentist take the challenge and ASK THIS QUESTION? What can I eat or do nutritionally to alter my state of ailment or disease or dental problem? Your answer will be their reply? HINT: you need to ACT on what you do not hear that is of honest - integrity and honourable answer.

Many of my patiens tell me that they learned more about their meds from me than from their Primary care physician who prescribed them. It is not about "dishonesty". Sometimes we have to give someone antibiotics regardless about damaging gut bacteria, so you take probiotics as well. Educate yourself to help not just criticize.
