For anyone out there who are constantly afraid of how you dress, if there's one thing I learned growing up is that, unless your fashion senses are abysmally broken, it doesn't really matter how you dress as long as you wear it with pride. I live in a big city, Montréal Canada to be precise, where everyone has a different style due to the staggering amount of diversity we have here. No matter what I wear, whether I'm rocking a semi-formal getup or wearing the geekiest shirts I possess, I always get smiles at me or sometimes have strangers strike up a conversation. From what my friends and loved ones told me, it's simply because I exude confidence and approachability whenever I walk or talk to someone. Your dressing style is a reflection of who you are at your core. I rather you dress in what makes you feel comfortable than trying to dress like someone you're not just to satisfy social norms. Be yourself, don't let shame guide your life. I'm more likely to talk to someone who dresses with passion instead of conformity. Authenticity is everything.

"Your dressing style is a reflection of who you are at your core. I rather you dress in what makes you feel comfortable than trying to dress like someone you're not just to satisfy social norms." 100% agreed. This is a good video (at least I think so) for dressing in this kind of style. And there's nothing wrong with this style. But, I'm someon who dresses up in a nerdy t-shirt and neon, mismatched shorts. That is *my* style. Is it for everyone? No. Is "less adult" than what was showcased here? Arguably. But it's what I'm into, it's what I feel comfortable in. The "casual" outfits showcased in this video I would consider formal and I would feel really uncomfortable in them. Never mind something like a suit. And, with dating, I want a woman to be into me, not the sanitized version. This is who I am, loud and proud. Will so people be turned away? Sure. But if there is someone meant for me, she won't be.

@@5ofspades427 I am dressing to impress, just not in the typical way. I am making an impression about who am I, my personality and my interests. That will undoubtably make a more accurate impression then if I wore uncomfortable clothes that I don't like the look of and don't represent me. What is the point of trying to force the typical style onto everyone? "Cursed is the church guy who wears sneakers to mass" Church is an entirely different matter. Of course I'm not going to wear t-shirts there.

Diversity often comes from embracing complexity and celebrating the richness of different perspectives, styles, and cultures. Simplifying will lead to homogeneity rather than diversity, as it may overlook the unique elements that contribute to individuality and cultural richness. Why not wear a T-Shirt of your last hackathon or Sportsclub? The experiences you made, make you who you are. If you like who you are show it. Confidence is key when interacting with other People. "Pretty" Cloth wont change that.

@@CourtneyRyan Clothing and speak who you are to others. I'm a graphic designer and I'm also 37. I love a design that represents an element of my personality, that might not ever come up in discussion if not for me representing that in my choice of clothing. Granted there is a time and place for everthing, but just because we are males doesn't mean everything we wear has to be plain all the time. My wife loves my since of style, and you Courtney Ryan do not set or control the standard for what's appropriate for a man to wear at any age. You never will ! Ultimately guys, just be self observant. Recognise when your clothing is getting tatty, no longer fits or is perhaps just a little outdated. That said though, do you. I absolutely love what Courtney does, but we also need to remember that this is somewhat her taste in men and her opinion on fashion. Another huge point is that when you are yourself, you attract who likes you for you and you'd never have to pretend to be someone you're not. Ever since I've started buying my own clothes, I've had compliments about how I dress, and I mostly put this down to knowing myself and thinking outside the box. I know what suits me, and I don't follow fashion which means I often stand out (for good reason based on the compliments haha). If everyone was dressing as Courtney recommended, do you really think we would all flourish, or would this standard then become stale? As a digital creative, I understand colour theory so implement matching/opposite colours, seasonal palettes as well as what compliments my skin tone. I'm 33 and my dress sense hasn't really changed all that much (except things have become better fitting), i've just brought in new elements. Just do you, but question where you could be going wrong so to not get so comfortable.

Just a tourist here. It seems like there's a lot of emphasis on 'how you will be perceived'. I understand the whole 'first impression' line-of-thought - but the person who would dismiss me because of a first impression is not a person whose opinion and friendship I would value. I'm an older man now. I'm past the 'caring what people think about me' part of my life. If fashion is your thing, by all means pursue it. This seems to be a good channel for this. I definitely agree with the 'no logos' opinion. But confidence, empathetic listening and a good sense-of-humor will get you much more respect than fashion ....at least to the people who matter in your life.

Regardless of age, sometimes a man still wants to feel youthful, a graphic T-shirt can bring out some liveliness from your inner rockstar or skater. Your style should be an expression of yourself, and so while its important to know how to dress as an adult when it's needed, it's also true that adults aren't monolithic, and that it's okay to dress in a way that inspires a younger crowd just getting into fashion to be expressive.

    1. I get it loud and clear about keeping it simple and not having big logos on things, but its easier said than done. most cases we have only big logo to choose with color options being black, white brown, grey, blue, green if you´re lucky, some strange tone of yellow, orange - hard to find. Red is almost impossible to find, but colors aside, big logos are almost always on everything (very annoying). 2. Picking based on body type is good, but we mostly get straight type, not V shape i have, plus color options are are even more limited (and yes the logos have to be big on everything). Finding right size is always an issue. Getting the right fit with color preference is impossible without getting it custom made.. Getting the right fit without color preference is still impossible task. Getting anything below L size is hard. Even size M is hard to find.. 3. Denim to suit body type again hard to find, most are straight cut. Hardest thing in the world to find to suit body type. Tones narrow it down hard for us. Easiest way to ruin entire look. 3. Shoes tend to do us favors. Still hard to find. To match color even harder. 4. Color tends to be an issue yet again with jackets or ANY type of anything you wear over anything. BIG logos everywhere. Color options are almost non-existent. Size is hard to find above M if even that. 5. LOGOS ARE BIG ON EVERYTHING. So yeah, its simple basics. 6. Most every store has 75 percent for women to choose what they like. We get 25 percent divided between everything we want to wear - including underwear. That is a ridiculous amount to choose from.

9:40 - I like mixing "juvenile" looking pieces with elevated elements such as the faded blue denim jacket you mentioned here paired with a dress shirt and dress pants using elevated weaves and fabrics along with elevated accessories like a silk neckerchief. I think combinations like these plays with these traditional tropes which then conveys a unique story.

I haven't worn a suit for 3 years and now am working in an office environment again have had to find a whole new smart casual but professional look. Younger professional men around me just look a mess quite often. I go for smart chinos, brogue shoes, button down or stiff collared short and quarter zip pullover. I do wear more casual when working from home but still need to be online and want to look good on camera in Teams meetings as I often am. I just don't think wearing T shirts, training shoes and even track suits and baggy jumpers is a good look in any work setting.

Totally agree with this. purchasing clothing without paying a premium for logos means you can usually get better quality material on an item of clothing that will stay in style for a longer period of time. Classic men pieces can stay in style for decades like a Harrington jacket or aviator sunglasses. I personally don’t understand the appeal of Gucci or LV. You are paying a lot of money to purchase a product that makes you look fake rich.

I have a funny story about LV. My wife wanted an LV bag for years. I worked a bunch of overtime one holiday season and saved up about $1200 Cash for her. We took a weekend trip to New Orleans and popped into the LV store down there. You would think the place was full wealthy well-mannered folks. It was full of poorly dressed old ladies that looked like they all smoked a pack a day. Everyone was swiping cards to buy bags. One lady split the bill between a card that reached its limit and another one she had in her purse. The experience changed my wife's perspective. If anyone can swipe a card for it, is it really all that exclusive? We spent that cash on other fun experiences in the city, and never looked at expensive bags again.

I had an epiphany the other day. Most men don’t understand what it means for clothes to fit you properly. We grew up wearing clothes that were too big for us because our moms would buy clothes too big for us because we would grow into them and she didn’t want to waste too much money when we grow out of them. Now we have a generation of men who thinks wearing oversized tshirts and always pulling up your pants is normal.

My sense of fashion is purely about convenience. I've heard people like Courtney say that one should be dressed up every time they leave the house. I'm not going to do that. I'll stick to the convenience and time saving idea of going grocery shopping in whatever I'm wearing at that moment. If I am wearing my uniform coming back from work and I need to pick something up on the way home, I'm not going all the way home to change into the right style to go pick up dry cleaning or some groceries. Wear what's comfortable people. Dress up when you're actually headed out on a date or going to an event where you probably shouldn't show up soaked in sweat after the gym.

Any advice for us europeans when it comes to brands? I've not seen many and those that I saw were not in an appropriate price range for a first pair of boots for a young man. Also any tips on pants for big thighs? I'm not a chubby guy, but my thighs are very pronounced, partly due to leg workouts, but also in general; my calves are very strong and lean though and my ankles quite slim, so its a bit like a V-shape... What is the call here? It's hard to get well-fitting pants, especially denim, maybe you know something I don't.

There’s an adage amongst motorcycle riders that goes “Ride your own ride.” It simply means that you should ride in a way that suits your comfort level, skill, and ability. Never mind how others ride, or what they might think about your style of riding. As a mature man who works outdoors, is survival minded and driven by the urban environment I live and operate in, my clothing on a given day is frequently chosen with the idea in mind that the day might include unforeseen circumstances. For example, I always wear shoes or boots I can run in (either towards or away from something). In colder weather I’ll wear a good base layer regardless of whether or not I plan on being outdoors. Because I always carry a handgun, pants and shorts need to be sturdy enough to support a heavy webbed belt that securely holds a holster and full size handgun with spare magazines. I love having a wide variety of shirts and jackets that I can wear tucked or draped over my pistol for concealment. I have a close friend in his 50’s who occasionally wears Keds and Hey Dudes (but NEVER at the same time). He dresses much the way I do otherwise, and because he’s a 25 year SWAT operator he gets a pass on the footwear. I enjoyed your video and I did learn a few things to put in to practice.

Very happily married grown man here, in part cause my wife has never once told me how to dress. Nor do I tell her. Also, being 50+ I am also so far beyond caring what anyone else thinks. My advice to younger men, would be life is short, be yourself. Don't worry about what others think. Whatever you do NEVER date or marry a woman who won't accept you for you. Or feels to mother you and try and telkl you how to live. Half teh miserable husbands I know are the ones who have to get permission to just do what they love. Usually where most of the divorces come from too. You do need to know how to dress for success and at work, so there yes, you need to learn to look the part of the job you want based on the culture of the company you work for, and that is where maybe some of this advice isn't bad. However at home and on your own live your best life. For me that includes loud Metal band T shirts hawaiian shirts and cargo pants, and whatever shoe is most comfortable atm.....and they will take my blue jean jackets away from my corpse.....maybe.....maybe not.

I worked out the plain fitted T-shirt and dark slim jeans thing a while ago - more out of laziness/simplicity than because of any sense of style (plus you save cash by not wearing ‘branded’ Tees). Can team those two simple base items with a casual sports jacket, cardigan or classy fitted utility jacket. Same with footwear. Dress it up with leather shoes/boots, or even down to a pair of fresh/clean Vans slip-ons (…beachside locale). Can also add a flat cap, scarf etc to suit weather conditions.

I'd say you "should" dress according not just to your age but also body type and other features. In my case for example, I'm 38, in theory I should dress more casual like a young adult in the 40s, but I'm just 165cm tall, I used to be VERY fit until I was 30--31 and still keep a lean/fit body, and thanks to genetics and a healthy lifestyle I've always looked easily 6 years younger than I am. The same happened to my mom (people though she was underage when she married, and she was 20) and I had a very hard time with women up until being 26-27 and above because I looked "too young" and "like a teen" to most of them, like "not manly enough". Think of people like Michael J Fox or Elijah Wood. Now, despite being 38, people always think I'm around 30 and I mostly wear jeans (good slim fit) with hoodies (some with graphics, some without) or white shirt, and sneakers (some colorful, some not), usually matching my hoodie with the sneakers. I wouldn't be able to pull it off if I looked older, and I know it's going to look a bit weird when I'm 45 or something like that, but having the heigh of a teenager, the bodytype of a teenager, and facial features of a 30 years old intern, I can get away looking good and "appropriate to my age" with looks more adequate for a young college graduate in his mid-late 20s. Sometimes I've had to wear a suit for work and I've been told it looked "strange of me" precisely because my physique gave the impression of a teen in Prom Night instead of a "man wearing a suit", because I've been both lucky and unlucky with my "Michael J Fox perpetual teeange" kind of looks.

I second the motion for Thursday boots. I watched a video of a guy in the UK who wore them for an entire year trekking through the various countries in all sorts of weather conditions. They held up superbly. One of the great things about these kinds of leather boots is that they develop their own unique patina over time, so that your pair of boots are distinct and unique to you.

In the last year I have moved from graphic tees to Fresh Clean Threads solid color tees. Pairing that with Bonobos has been a big upgrade from too large jeans and graphic tees. Shoes are different story because nice boots like you showed rarely come in wide (4E+) sizes, so we’re left with whatever is available. Thanks for the free tips. I think a lot of men just need simple to follow guidance.

Some of us have gone through the family-man generic casual stage and reached a point in our career and midlife crisis where we go full blown into repping all the nerd stuff we loved as teens. For years I admired guys wearing the Voltron shirt until one day into my 40's I realized I can do what I want and I don't have to prove I'm a mature provider/protector anymore. Amazing how well a nerd shirt, cargo shorts and a pair of Jordans rejuvenates me after a 30 year slog of business casual doldrum. My wife loves it too, because she's been waiting for me to learn to have fun again. If I was single and trying to hook a relationship, her advice is probably spot on.

You uploaded this a few days after my conversation with my dad about wanting a more mature style since I’ll be 30 this year. There’s no reason why I should be dressing like a high school student. Right now, I’m focusing on getting clothes for work since that’s where I spend most of my time but I’m strategically getting clothes that can be worn at work and if I’m going out with friends. The style at my job tends to be very casual and I dress somewhere in between business casual and casual. Eventually, I want to get some suits and a few really nice dress shoes but considering the fact that I won’t need to wear those any time soon, it would make sense for me to get them.

You can start with a versatile pair of dress shoes such as dark brown cap-toe Oxfords. These can be sported with a pair of jeans as well as with suits. Regarding jeans, as said Courtney, selvedge sewing is the best and most robust. Look for raw denim pants, therefore: they’ll adjust to your shape and become a unique piece of clothing over time. If you love them and wear them well, they’ll give you beautiful fades in specific spots of the fabric. 😊

Thank you for your content! I appreciate a woman’s perspective on how to dress my age. I turned 50 last year and finally ended a toxic 8 year relationship and relocated to my dream city with my company. I took the opportunity to purge stuff that looks like my son would wear or no longer fit due to weight loss from all of the stress. I went down to maybe 6 shirts and 4 pairs of pants that fit well and a few sweaters that I can rotate depending on what accent color I want to coordinate with the outfit. I looked at well dressed men around me and took cues from their style and found items I already owned that I could throw in but I also bought a few new pieces such as a nice pair of dress casual shoes that I can pair with either pants or the right jeans to give myself options. Now just need to take my new look and get out there and meet some new people! 😊 Thanks Courtney!

Style should be an expression of one's self. Worrying about what people think about what you're wearing as an adult. If a graphic tee, and cargo pants is your style rock it. If a 3 piece suit is your style rock it. Whatever your style is rock it. It's the confidence of the person wearing the clothes that makes them feel mature or immature. If someone is judging you because you're wearing a graphic tee or a hoodie with a logo or whatever you like that simply means that's one more person you don't need in your life. They weren't going to accept you for being you, and you don't need that toxicity in your life. Confidently live your own life, rocking your own style, and it won't matter if that's graphic Tees and Jeans from a big box store or a layered outfit from upscale brands in the latest trends from a fashion district as long as you like what you wear it with confidence that is mature style.

"Find your uniform" was really great. I Struggled for years with dressing casually- in fact, as a lawyer- I have a ton of suits, and just started wearing suits everywhere to make my life easier. I would mix athleisure clothes with formal clothes and I would look like a mess. A few years ago I decided to step into dressing with a outdoorsy and southwest theme and it made my life easier. Thank you for some great advice! I just turned 62, although I've been told I look much younger than my age. In addition to being a radio broadcaster, I also do a solo acoustic guitar/vocal act. I've avoided trying to dress like a 20-year old (overly tight jeans with sequins on the back pockets). During music gigs, I keep it conservative -- collared dress shirt and nice slacks for upscale wine bars. For more casual gigs, a collard shirt of polo shirt, and well-fit khakis, or quality jeans. I keep my haircut short, as I'm active in the business world, and it's less maintenance than longer hair styles. I've found younger women like shower hair on men, while women who were teens during the 60's, prefer longer hair. I'd be curious for your thoughts on this. Thanks!

The jacket that shares the same sewing pattern as a denim jacket is traditionally called a duck coat, or a sport coat, after hunter's attire. For bros out there looking for one try and find one with the slanted pockets like a hoodie pouch because it'll extend the utility outta the jacket. Very classic, very much versatile. All good picks from Courtney.

Honestly, unless you're looking to impress someone (find a romantic partner), in my opinion it doesn't matter what you wear as long as it's not grossly inappropriate. I'm 29 and I go out wearing hoodies, tracksuits and just anything that's comfortable for casual. The only time I'm dressing up is for work and social events. As long as you're dressed appropriately for whatever environment you're in, that's good enough. When I was a teenager and in my early twenties, I was very style conscious and would dress up just to the corner shop and pick up groceries. I think part of getting older (at least for me) is not over thinking about "fashion" and looking good to random strangers you probably won't ever seen again, just wearing what you like to wear. None the less if you are looking to dress to impress, this video is spot on. Nice little KZread recommendation.

So in a nutshell: Don't wear any colours that you can't find in a cappuccino. I wouldn't call her advice terrible. I think its simple and good advice for men that don't care what they are wearing but still want to appear like they care to attract females. However, you will definitely end up looking like the majority of men between 20 and 35 because most of them are wearing exactly what she has been describing as a good style for men. I personally think that adult men can absolutely pull of bolder colours as well. You just have to be confident and secure about it.

I live in Houston Texas, where it’s mainly hot and humid and I like how you advise to wear simple and bold colors instead of graphics, that’s what I’ve been doing this past couple years and I work real estate and what I like to wear is a nice pair of Slacks with a contrasted color, bold crew shirt, and I wear a sports coat jacket that goes with the colors. Is that too casual to wear a crewneck with a men’s sports coat? I also like to wear Chelsea boots, camel brown color that brings out the darker colors, what do you think about Chelsea boots? Teddy I said hi and I love his channel as well, I actually bought a Seiko watch yesterday from his store for my cousins high school graduation in the next couple weeks, the solar powered one, I’m pretty stoked about it, I’ll be ordering mine very soon.

Alright, let me see if I got this. Dressing casual as a grown man is about dressing *maturely,* which comes down to a few key factors: Well-matched and well-fitting clothes, both of which show that you actually put some measure of thought and intention towards what you're wearing and don't just run on whatever made it's way into your wardrobe for one reason or another. A man who dresses with intention lives with intention. A more conservative and less attention-grabbing style. So no flashy details (tears, distressing, graphics and so on) and more grounded colors (black, grey, dark blue, brown, beige, white and so on; basically avoid anything on the red and yellow color spectrum). This basically announces that you are able to fit in with others, which is valuable in a society based on cooperation like ours. Also, rebelling against the system is something for tweens. A grown man is supposed to have put his own little system into place. Also, higher quality fabrics. And I am going to say this, this has something to do socioeconomic status. Men are primarily attracted to fitness and youthfulness, that's why women's fashion skews towards being tight-fitting and / or revealing. Women on the other hand are primarily attracted to status, so while showing off your physical features doesn't hurt, just spending more money on your clothes will instantly make you look more attractive as a man. Did I got this right?
