10 Things Men Shouldn't Wear in 2024 (or Ever)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I know, I know… Another clickbait-y, overly prescriptive hot take about what you should or should not wear. Let me just get something straight before we get into the list. First, this is all just, like, my opinion, man. And I’m just some guy on the internet. Sure, I think I have pretty good taste, but taste is subjective, and yours is just as valid.
Second, this video is meant to be lighthearted. If you’ve bought, own or even love some of the things on this list, that’s totally fine: wear what makes you happy. And for the record, I’ve worn many of these things in the past. Please don’t take this video too seriously, and of course, feel free to fire back in the comments section.

My best suit jacket size is 34 Short, but even 34S needs alterations (mostly shortening of the sleeves and jacket), so my best-fitting suits are custom.

Couple of clarifications: 1 - Yes, I agree that v-necks make great undershirts 2 - You could argue that most watches are "homages" in some way...okay, fair point 3 - Yeah, John Wick wears all black. But are you John Wick? 4 - Black shirts are fine as part of a uniform (musician, clergy, valet, etc.) 5 - Brown is an underrated color in menswear 6 - I'm adding oversized watches to this list 7 - And bowties 8 - Buy my style course - kzread.info/dash/bejne/loWrltlyh8q-k7Q.html

Calling hybrid dress shoes the "corporate branded performance polo of foot coverings" is the best take of the year so far. Brock, your video quality has gotten a lot better since a year or 2 ago! I like the lighting choices (that sneaky yellow-orange lamp is a nice touch), and the 2 camera angles really help your story telling. Hi Brock, I would like to describe the virtues of a (normal) vneck t-shirt vs crew neck: 1. Vnecks are great t-shirts to wear under your dress shirt at the office. Crew necks under a dress shirt (with an open collar) look absolutely terrible. You have a nice dress shirt which is undermined by the crew neck t-shirt. 2. On hot days, that simple v neck opening helps keep one cooler. 3. Depending on the body shape and facial structure, the v-neck might accentuate the wearer's positive physical characteristics.

  • @mtlicq

    @mtlicq

    Ай бұрын

You got that right! V-neck undershirts and v-neck sweaters are exactly for the purpose of button up shirts with the collar open, and not at all ever really meant for any other arrangement. Crew-neck undershirts are for when you button the shirt up all the way and close the collar and put on a tie.

I wear soccer (football) shirts as the game is massive over here and there are certain contexts where it's acceptable. I sometimes wear one at home if I'm just going to be around the house or doing stuff in the garden etc. Obviously, wearing them to a game is fine or on holiday/at the beach if you just want a top to throw on (especially if you're like a lot of Brits and you toast just by talking about the sun). I do see loads of guys wear football shirts in public and although I love the game I'm just not a fan of wearing them as every day clothing. I do have a polo shirt with a small badge of my team on the chest and that looks way better.

Additionally, it is my belief that our national obsession with faithful devotion to one's "team" fuels the political divides between us, making compromise more anathema and internecine xenophobia more likely.

I'm a hobby player (guitar, bass) that's been in local bands and an overall music fanatic with an iTunes collection of over 12,000 songs. Bumming around the house or running errands on the weekend you'll see me in one of my rock shirts (Zeppelin, Beatles, Yes, Queen, Deep Purple, The Who, Pink Floyd, Elton John, etc...). About jerseys: Some soccer teams in Europe started to put out incredible jerseys that can be worn as statement pieces. Look especially for Italian teams (Venezia FC 2022 kit is really good) and I think they'd go quite nicely with a casual/sporty look. Pair them up with joggers or cargo pants and sneakers you're good to go. Of course this is my opinion.

Sure the super deep vees look silly, but a shallow vee neck can look fine. After all it’s just a tee shirt so it’s going to be casual regardless. Deep vee are great for undershirts if you don’t want the undershirt visible. 2. The long scallop hems do look silly and make legs appear short, but they are nice for workout shirts, especially if raising your arms above your head and don’t want to expose your belly!

I agree with the list with a few exceptions. The homage watch is a legitimate loophole for a couple of reasons. Some homages are for very old designs that are often unobtainable or very expensive. Second, even if an homage to a current model, say the Rolex Submariner, most people can’t afford a real Rolex sub. But if you just enjoy the look, really nothing wrong with buying a Steinhart or a San Martin. And, fwiw if anybody notices your watch, comment is usually more like nice watch then I’d that a Rolex Third, to some extent, a lot of watches borrow elements from famous designs. I have a Seiko Alpinist that borrows design language from Oris. And another Seiko that looks a little like a Tudor Black Bay. And yet somehow I managed to look at myself in the mirror. My suggestion is, don’t go too far into collecting homages and you will be fine. As for things not to wear, I guess crocs would make my list.

  • @BrockMcGoff

Definitely agree. I began buying more watches from AliExpress from brands like San Martin for certain reasons. If I like the looks of it and it happens to be a homage I still buy it for the fact that the specs on brands like San Martin are an incredible value. My $250 San Martin has better specs than any of my $500+ watches from brands such as seiko. Why would I buy a lesser quality watch for double or triple the price just because it’s a seiko? And like you alluded to, seiko themselves have many designs that could easily be labeled a homage watch. The vast majority of the population is not in to watches. I’ve never ever had someone ask “Is that a black bay 58?” Either no one says anything or someone says “that’s a nice looking watch” which I’d then respond “thanks”. No reason to try to pass it of as something it’s not. None of my friends, family, or acquaintances even know what the brand Tudor is so there’s definitely no pretending my watch is anything but the brand name that is on the dial, “San Martin” Also I don’t have a large enough budget to go over a $1000 for a single watch and I enjoy variety so I’ll stick with my $200 San Martin rather than forking out $6k for a Tudor. I understand people that don’t feel the same and would rather spend more money on just one piece that has heritage. Totally get why they would choose that route. But just because someone chooses a different route and buys a homage watch does not mean they are somehow pretending to be better than other people or that they are trying to play it off as the real thing. I say buy whatever you enjoy and can afford.

The last watch I bought was actually a Tommy Hilfiger. I got a very good deal on it (it was clearance priced, I had a 20% coupon that I used, and an additional 20% employee discount), but when I cracked the crystal (something I have done to most of the watches I owned), I discovered replacing the crystal was going to be more than twice what I paid for the watch. Since then, I simply use my cell phone as my watch, and since it (1) stays in my pocket most of the time, and (2) has a protective case and glass screen protector, I haven't had any problems. I *did* like the watch, and it was probably modeled on something else, but I liked the look (gunmetal silver steel band, and a blue face). I would never have tried to pass it off as anything other than a relatively inexpensive watch (despite the "designer" name), and none of my friends or peers are watch collectors or horologophiles.

I agree with all but one. I live in the south and the Hey dudes seem to be a southern thing. Even though some people do not care for them. They seem to be everywhere here. They come in many different styles and colors. They are super light and super comfortable. You can slide into them quickly and they go decent with jeans. So comfortable I’m not giving them up.

I agree on your take on fake watches, but i think homage are ok, specially if they are mechanical or automatic, there are some well crafted homage watches out there, and anyway what are the odds of somebody asking what watch brand you're wearing?

Exactly. Nobody gives a what about my choice of watches. I just like have a reasonably priced watch with super nice specs. I've zero interest in dumping $20, $30, or $40k into say, a Rolex which are *to me* garish, bland, (at the same time!) when I can have a few tasteful Seiko's, or dare I say it, a nice looking Pagani Design for a change-up. Give me an orange Seiko Monster and I'm happy! Or a discreet looking dive watch with a suit! Why not? And, anyway, *NOBODY CARES*.

@@7CharlesV One thing I really love about the watch enthusiast community is they'll respect someone who wears a Casio and really loves it over a person who wears a Rolex only because they care about what other people think. The video's advice to "save up for the watch you want" is good. But I don't think anyone should be embarrassed about wearing a timepiece that they love, even if a non-watch person thinks the brand name isn't impressive.

Get them in the ladies department. Those are 1) not over the knee, 2) not over the top baggy, 3) have a proper rise so you won't show butt-cracks. See them as well dressed cargo shorts.

I have an 18 inch neck and a 32 inch waist, the only choice I have is a v-neck or a larger fitting tee, buying a cotton Oxford is a nightmare too, 18 inch neck comes with something like a 52 chest, ridiculous

I'm right there with you, kinda. I have an 18-inch neck and 32-inch waist, but I also have a 50-inch chest. I have to get nearly every shirt I buy tailored. Otherwise, I look like I'm wearing a sheet. I have an amazing seamstress, though.

My first time coming across your channel. I was watching 8 sexiest things men wear (according to women) and a thumbnail version of your video was on the side bar. Oddly similar in style advice. The woman for that video was much more appealing to look at, but you made me laugh so it was good complimentary viewing -- dolphins? lol And totally agree on the jerseys commentary. Great channel!
