Stop Wasting Money on Skincare Products (That Don't Actually Work)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Think of a skincare brand. I’ve probably tried it. From mainstays like Clearasil and Cerave to fancy DTC start ups like Lumin and Tiege Hanley, to department store favorites like Khiels and Jack Black, I’ve tried them all.
And to be honest, I like a lot of these brands. In fact, I’m currently using a Tiger Hanley face wash, Jack Black deodorant and Geologie moisturizer. But I’m not loyal to any one brand, or even any one product. You see, I’ve learned one important lesson over the years, something that helped transform my skin AND changed the way I shop for skincare products.
It’s something most people don’t consider, and it’s definitely something that marketers don’t really want you to think about. That lesson is that, when it comes to finding skincare products that actually make you look better, it’s not about the brand or the product or the supposed benefits.

    This is why I watch Brock, unlike any other men's health/ men's style KZreadrs he doesn't shamelessly advertise a product like the others, you see it in his content he actually cares and gives advice that most of us can attempt to try immediately, he gives information base on his experience that's why his content is still great.

    I’ve been on adapalene for a while and like you said it’s a game changer. I’ve tried other retinoids and anything more then 1% breaks me out immediately. Seeing what your skin can take is a big part of it

    Oh Wow... I used Differin Gel when I was a teenager to clear up my acne and that changed my life. I never considered it as a retinol treatment. Up to this day I still use it if I have an occasional blemish... but what really makes my skin look good (and I turned 40 now) is a clean-smooth face. I got a laser treatment on my face years ago and now I don´t have to shave at all.

    Hi Brock, great video! Just wanted to offer one piece of info as a Doc, retinoids as a whole are considered to be 'teratogenic', that is, dangerous for a developing baby - even when applied topically (i.e as a cream). As such, all pregnant women (and women of a child-bearing age) must avoid using these products. I know that most of your audience is men, but I thought mentioning it prudent. Otherwise, awesome stuff as usual!

    Thanks for the insights! Great point, and something I overlooked (as a guy). Now that you mention it, I was pretty surprised at how many things my wife couldn’t eat/use while pregnant. As if pregnancy wasn’t hard enough!

    Thank you, Brock, for cutting through all the baloney. I’m an older (68) short (5’ 5”) guy who started watching your channel several years ago for style advice. You’re right about all the “natural” ingredients. There is certainly nothing wrong with them, but are they effective? So I did some research and learned what actually works. I follow a skin care regimen utilizing salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and retinol containing products. People tell me I look younger than my actual age. I like that.

    Thank you for the advice. After watching your video, I switched to using 0.1% Adapalene twice a week. Also, like you suggested, I focused more on the active ingredients rather than the brand names. I added 10% niacinamide serum and 20% azelaic acid from more affordable brands. In the morning I use Vitamin C. Surprisingly, my total cost is only around $10-15 per month but my skin is smoother and acne-free - so much cheaper than before when I just listened to the marketing about product benefits without understanding the key active ingredients. Thank you so much for all the great tips 🥰

    Is retinol the same as Retin-A? Is Retin-A a type of retinol and if so is it better or worse than other retinols for anti ageing?

    For UK viewers, it is hard to source the products which Brock uses. I use the combo which youtuber Ali Abdaal uses: - CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser - CeraVe PM Daily Facial Moisturiser Lotion - Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50 - Tretinoin from Dermatica Routine ------------- Apply the hydrating cleanser while in shower After drying, apply your sunscreen/mousturiser combo After brushing teeth in evening, wash face and apply the hydrating cleanser again, then dry face with towel Apply retonoid cream, give it a few minutes to settle in and then apply PM moisturiser

    The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is my favorite. The first time I used it I thought I was just using lotion on my face. But it works great. Doesn’t strip the skin. Their body wash is the best. Hard to find even in the US.

    I've been using retinol in my nightly routine for like 3 months now. The serum i use is at 0,5% strenght. Should i increas it or just stick to it? I've seen minor improvments in the skin but nothing radical.

  • @BrockMcGoff

    @BrockMcGoff

    I’ve tried a few higher end options and honestly, didn’t notice anything. I think it mostly comes down to genetics (e.g., if you have deep set eyes), body fat percentage and how rested you are. For example, I have deep eyes, low fat and two young kids, so my under eye area is hopeless (for now) 😵‍💫
