I guess people overlook mouth because there are SO MANY subtlety in the shapes, like, those little lines curving up at the corners, I had no ideia they where there, and this big ball on the face where the mouth sits, I never really took it in consideration, I knew it exists, but I treated it as a different part of the face, I think that's because we are all so obsessed with obvious facial features and forget about the subtle planes and how they afect the mouth nose and eyes, the eye socket used to cause this effect on me. This is a very good video Marco, feels like I learned so much well done

Hey, this tutorial was fantastic. I’m a reasonably-ish good artist who has just recently begun delving more deeply into portrait drawings, and yes, mouths are the hardest for me, particularly from a three quarter turn view. You’ve absolutely nailed breaking the whole process down into natural forms and planes and put that across incredibly well, so thanks, you got a sub from me 👍

I love how he always emphasizes the infos that most people aren't aware of but which give the right way of thinking about the subject. The only thing I thought would help make the lips look less "stamped onto the face" that wasn't included were those small light reflection spots on certain edges. But still, very nice and thorough explanation.

I don't know if this will help or not... BUT I tend to start from the middle and work outward on faces, rather than try to outline and fill. Once you get "proportion" you can measure just about everything from "eye-lengths" (from corner to corner as if the eye is the stereotyped "football" shape)... Yes, you CAN still shape the eyes ANY shape you like. The "football" is a "symbolic ideal" of the eye, only to give values to "eye-length" and "eye-width"... SO the basics... The eyes are 1 eye-length apart, forming the "bridge" of the nose. The nose is about 1.5 eye-lengths from the top of the bridge to the nostril-plane. (there's tolerance between 1.4 and 2.0, tending toward 2 or even more as the face ages) The philstrum is about .5 eye-length (or roughly an eye-width, if we're in famously Greek "golden proportions" of 2:1)... The "no-man's land" below the lower lip is roughly equal to the philstrum, to the "upper crease" of the chin.... and the chin is about an eye-length from the lower lip to its point in females, and about 1.5 eye-lengths in males... Eye-width's CAN be substituted for any of the "half" eye-lengths as you see fit. The trick to this as an "advanced" method is CONSISTENCY within the face you're drawing. If you substitute the eye-width for (say) the philstrum (the space between nose and upper lip/center) then you probably SHOULD do the same below the lower lip... AND special bonus is that through a slight shift in eye-shape and substitution, you CAN fight that infamous "same face syndrome" some artists bitch and whine about... haha Similarly, some faces have about half an eye-length from the outer corners of the eyes to the edge of the face, at the temples... Others have closer to 3/4's of the eye-length. You CAN simply substitute your eye-width (in THAT face), which is part of how artistically "styling" a face can have wildly varying results with a little play. AND the forehead... usually about 1.5 eye-lengths from the brow ridge and upper bridge of the nose to the hairline in males... It's similar in females "technically" but females tend to use "bangs" to cover and obscure this. Apparently, there's a notion of attractiveness for females with less forehead (brain space?) BUT it's easy to let this one get really fiddly before you hit "uncanny valley"... SO I've always gone with 1.5 eye-lengths to "rough it in" and then farted around with hair to "fix it" or refine the look I'm after. Human ears are usually aligned about with the eye-brows and the nostril-plane of the nose, but there's a little variability to "eye-ball" it, and with "other humanoids" all bets are off... Mostly, I just find that if I start by establishing a strong sense of the nose and eyes, the rest of the face ALMOST draws itself, leaving me just the minor detail of pushing the pencil or stylus around. Symmetry can be a bit of a bitch, but the reality is that nobody is quite "perfectly symmetrical" anyway, so RELAX and remember to breathe. I believe in you. You CAN get this whole "face thing". They're fiddly, but that's at least half the charm... and a HUGE chunk of the accomplishment and satisfaction you'll find DOING them. I do hope you find something helpful... At least, I can hope it was mildly entertaining, and you could get a good chuckle between now and the next useful video you happen upon. ;o)
