How to Do More Pushups

Hey everyone! This video is just to address a very common question I get:
"How do I do more pushups?"
Whether for personal reasons or to pass a fitness test, lots of people want to increase their pushup numbers!
Well, it depends on what level of fitness and strength you're currently at. You can kind of see this based on the number of pushups you can currently do:
1.) 0-5: Work on PREPARING yourself for pushups. This can be done by doing easier variation of pushups, like kneeling pushups or incline pushups. Remember that just because you can do a pushup doesn't necessarily mean it's the best way for you to practice them. Take your time on the easier variations and you may improve faster!
2.) 5-25: Work on developing your pushup STRENGTH. This is probably the stage where pushups will help you the most. Practice these 1-2 a week for 2-3 sets. Be safe, but push yourself HARD. Leave yourself plenty of rest time as you'll get stronger and more muscular during this stage. We grow when we rest, not when we train. So rest.
3.) 25-100+: During this stage, most would consider pushups to be an ENDURANCE exercise. Pushups won't necessarily be doing as much for your strength and muscle. You'll need more resistance for that. For more info on why this is, look up "Henneman's Size Principle." We need to work our larger muscle fibers with increasing resistance! If they don't activate, they aren't worked. You'll notice that you'll recover from your pushups a lot faster at this point. You can start training them 5-6 times a week for several sets. Proper breathing, technique, diet, and rest will have a large impact on your numbers.
Hope this can help!

No matter where we are on our journey, there's always someone who's more advanced and also less advanced. A small setback or success can move us either way so it's important to be mindful of this when comparing to others. We are merely a reflection of one another. Should our circumstances be even slightly different, who knows where we'd be on our journey. Small changes over time can do tremendous things. A small, constant drip of water, given enough time, can wear through the thickest rock.

@@blitzspitz I agree, but that's not all of it, I think. Some people need, deep in their hearts, to be pushed. Hampton's super great as a trainer as what he does works for the great majority of people. But I think ideally you get to know your trainee and give them what they need, be it encouragement or a solid kick in the butt. Just my opinion on what's the ideal trainer though; as I said, Hampton's still top tier already.

I've always struggled with weight, about 5 years ago I was able to do a thousand push-ups in a day. It took me about 5 months to get there from literally not being able to do five push-ups and I weighed about 230lbs at the time. Anyway I ended up injuring myself and life happened and I stopped working out. 2 months ago I got on the scale and weighed 280 lb and I couldn't even do a push-up I had no muscle. 2 months later I've lost about 12 lb and I'm gaining all that muscle back quicker than I thought. But anybody out there watching this I just want to say it's possible, it just takes commitment and you really need to want to be healthy. I'm turning 30 this year and I don't want to try reversing diabetes in 20 years, I'm going to proactively prevent diabetes with exercise and good diet. So much of the food in the stores is garbage, nutritional information is so important. Boy that was long-winded, I really appreciate your videos my dude.

I recently started to workout again at home after not working out for more than a year due to Corona. I started at about 5 Pushups I could do and today I hit the point, where I can comfortably do 20 in a row, even though my weight hasn't changed significantly I definetly see the way my body changes the fat to muscles and I start to like my body with every change I see each week and the progress of it. Thanks for every tip you give in these videos, thanks for giving sooo many good life and workout advises. I hope you will do this for many more years to come.

This channel made me start doing a little bit of strength training, and for the first time in my 40 years of life it seems I might manage to continue with it. Usually I quit quite soon, because it's simply too painful. Wall pushups (and "wall pullups" from another video, the first one I saw) was an eye-opener for me. I can do about 10 normal pushups, but I _hate_ it and feel broken afterwards. Which means I stop after a couple of days. Knee-pushups don't work for me because of some knee-issues, but using walls/chairs/kitchen counter... that I can do! :-) Thanks!

Man dude I remember you being at 200k. Congrats fellow asian "hopefully your asian sorry" I want to thank you for getting me past some roadblocks in my journey to just having a start to better health. I've been depressed with my life and nowadays I've been trying to help myself and my father. Thanks you for picking my up when I was falling at the start

I like doing pushups on stairs. The higher up the easier more reps, the lower the step less reps

I started working out for 1 month and was really sad when there was no progress, I started stopping to workout everyday and just worked out like 2 times a week mostly and after like 3 months I decided to do pushups, I managed to do 18 with perfect form and was really amazed that it actually worked, I started again working out everyday because this change motivated me, I wasnt able to do one pushup and I can do 20 now and 8 diamond pushups! My diet is not perfect because of money problems but im 18 and i'll look for a job and hopefully in a year I can hopefully do 1 arm pushups!

I found the same thing with running from a heavy weight, I came down from 300lbs twice in my life and this second time I started running at 250lbs (300lbs to 250lbs dieting and walks) starting with a 3 mile run in an hour and after a week I was able to do the same run in 45 minutes and now after about a year, Im at 10.55 miles in 1hr 41min being my fastest time. The muscles I gained from being so heavy made it easier the more consistent I stayed.

@@freemindddddd At one point i hit 70 in under 2 minutes. Now i'm focussing on all round fitness lots more. Pushups are a nice start, but doing pull ups, sit ups, and lifting weights are the things i now do the most. Got myself fit enough to start in the army next month ,💪

Could barely do 7 pushups at the start of February. Now I'm hitting at least 30 in one single rep. I've had to stop though, due to nerve damage in my left wrist but will continue the grind when I start wearing those sleeves that help with carpel tunnel syndrome 👍
