My guppies and goldfish are doing awesome outdoors, my gopro doesn't do the color pop in the sun justice =/ and heck ya I need a calendar!!

I think the holes in the canopy is a very clever idea! Maybe that's the hillbilly in me LOL! LOVE IT!

Another thing that you can do for cooling is to pump water through a coil of tubing that is buried a few feet underground. This will cool the water prior to return. These types of geocoolers have to run continuously otherwise hydrogen sulfide will build up in the coil while the water is not flowing. You could regulate the flow with a T and a valve that allowed some water to bypass the underground coil and return directly to the pond. When it is hot all of the water is directed underground. When it is cooler you can have a percentage bypass the underground part. This will allow you to vary your cooling according to the outside temp. Of course you have to make a filter to keep the pump intake from getting clogged. Cheers, Chris

Oh wow. You have got it figured out. You might use bubble wrap to wrap the pond before you back fill around with the dirt. Love the cutouts in the top of the tent. Super smart.

We have the 110 gallon from Tractor Supply. I did a mutt guppy pond last year. This year going to do the raised garden bed with plants around it like you talked about also. The sun passes over the pond briefly, but it’s between our house and a huge magnolia tree (Houston suburbs).

Very nice work! I like how you ran the air tubing through the buried pvc. That hard work and dedication there.

Awesome ideas my brother, I live in Las Vegas and Ive always been hesitant to try summer tubbing here in the land of triple digits. One idea I was looking into is a submersible water chiller as well. Surface Agitation 👍. Great video, I have the same pond in Miami growing out African cichlids. I have a 125 gallon sponge filter as well as a waterfall and so far so good. In the winter the temp dropped to mid 60s during a cold front but didn't lose any fish. This winter I'm definitely getting another heater though

FYI. Stretch small bungi cords across the corners (from the underside) to help left the areas that get sacked with water. This will help reduce the size of the pools in the corners when it rains.

I’d wrap the tub in some fiberglass insulation and then bamboo privacy fence around the insulation. Just tuck the bamboo under the top lip of the tub and that would hold everything in place.. plus it won’t be hillbilly.😉👍🏻

You'd want to he super careful with potentially exposed fiberglass insulation with the dog around. If it brushed up against the tub that could cause some major issues. Maybe a different, safer type of insulation.

Ill have to hunt and see if you have updates. Interesting ideas. I am in Central FL where uppers 90s to low 100s are the norm from June to September. I have the same issue with the wife not wanting unsightly objects in the back yard. She tolerates my garden. I also have the unfortunate problem with a lot of wildlife. But I think I will take what you have here and instead of a tent, put in a lean-to on the north east side of the house(an area she hasnt been back to in years :P) that will provide a little shade at least, especially during the afternoon I think and would be easy to wrap in plastic for a quasi-greenhouse effect in winter.

Like that idea to build around it, I may have to convince the wife to do the same! I'm over here in Arkansas so I get the heat!

For when it's hot, I made a light colored fabric skirt. Then a small quiet fan blows over the fabric that I wet with distilled water. Evaporative cooling.

I'm afraid the low 70s drop at night would stress them out after a whole

I love the setup and im glad you secured the tent down i was worried about that Man i got to say i miss living there but i sure don't miss the heat i mean we both know 95 is nice sometimes in comparison of the 103 days lol sure dont miss 3 a days in that heat

I built a 2x4 box and used Fence boards to block in the panel parts! Stained it and it looks really nice! If I could do it over again, I would've built it bigger and added dirt, and then I could have planted to. I believe Aquapros did something similar.

@@JadrenAquatics I got a piece of plywood cut to size and I'm just gunna throw that over the top of mine. Although mines only 55 gallons, and I have white cloud minnows, and I don't get colder than 35°. So I'll probably heat it all winter.

Awsome idea with the flaps🤣💙 Underwater shot was cool I noticed that the fish store in town your buddy runs had some nice swordtail and Platy 😉 they do great in ponds and are colorful.✌🌿

paint it white and set in on the soil the bricks will make it harder to transfer the cool in the tub the fish will find the coldest place in the tub . well done video

My tub pond is in my rock garden at the top of a bank with plants planted in the rocks 🪨. So I am trying leaning rocks against the tub with open air space behind them to help keep the sun from directly heating the sides of the tub... just made that change today though on my first all sun 80 degree day in PA.... I have a hillbilly tarp to shade the backside after 2 pm but I am hoping not to use it. I built it and took it out to have it ready for any 90+ days... I though about backfilling behind the rocks with mulch... but I am winging it... I am thinking I will plant onions or bush beans or something around I next year when I try this so I can siphon the water right at the plants that will also be shading the walls... might do something ornamental instead... this was my first year trying a tub pond and if it doesn't work I will learn for next time

I live in Pasadena, CA and am thinking of doing exactly what you are doing. I'm thinking of either burying it a foot or building a sloped retaining wall around the whole tub using concrete blocks as stabilizers and then allowing my wife the honor of planting that hideous eyesore of bare dirt. "Honey, I built a sloped plant bed just for you." "Oh, aren't you dear." I'm surprised any plant would grow with that much duckweed... well... 150+ fish... good plan!

I have a much smaller tub (35 gal) but found a pvc pergola that was a little less hillbilly. My husband had the same requests for me to have a pond. We just had a 100 degree week on NC and the pergola with shade cloth kept the water at 85ish.

I live in southern Louisiana and have a couple of rubbermaid tubs outside to grow out guppy fry. You shared some very helpful information, we've been in the high eighties/low nineties for a few weeks and my water temperature has been hovering around 82, I've been dreading the onset of August! I really like the idea of building a raised garden bed around the tub....I bet there is a way that you could pump some water out of the tub to irrigate the plants and then cycle it back in. That way you wouldn't have to worry about watering the plants, and the plants would help suck nitrate out of the water! What do you do when you mow your lawn to keep grass clippings out of the tub? I have a lid for mine but some clippings still manage to sneak their way in. I've been covering the whole thing in plastic wrap but that seems very wasteful....

I'd suggest locating tubs, if possible, on the north side of the house, where there is constant shade. Shaded daylight will still be en0ough for water hyacinth, water lettuce, and duckweed to grow to provide fry cover.

Instead of the dirt around it get some copper pipe. Make a U shaped pipe and bury one side into the ground 2-3 feet. Take the other side and put it in the pond by about 6". Drill a small hole up top so it doesn't siphon the pond. The copper is a very good conductor and this will create a heat sink and will dump the heat into the earth which in your area should be about 60-65 degrees 2 feet down. Your right that a lot of heat will dissipate through evaporative cooling and keeping the water surface as turbulent as possible creates the most surface area for evaporative cooling. The surface plants might decrease this but you also have the shade working for you. The best method physics wise is to bury it because you use the entire under surface area of the pond exposed to dirt to use the ground as a heat sink. Regardless of the plastic's thermal resistance to heat flow because the area is so much bigger.

I have a deck over mine but I'm in kansas don't have to deal with those extremes till end of summer

This looks good. My question is do you have drainage holes on the side just in case the rain makes it through your wind flaps? That is the challenge i see with me doing one of these without the cover.

No it's just go naturally overflow but the amount of water that would have to enter the pond to push a fish over the edge would have to be tons

Adding plants around it would camouflage the hideous black tub and keep it cooler?

what about phx az where sometime even at night it reaches 120 durning the day and 90's sometime obove that at night

I think with cover, insulating the pond with dirt and heavy evaporate cooling it is still doable.

Hey Jadren... what area of Texas do you live?.. I live in Katy... I just set up a small 25 gal tub on my patio in the shade... no fish yet but tons of hornwart and frog bit... I am a bit concerned about the temp so after watching your video I just may go bigger.

Awesome job bro Iv got 4 tubs trying out for summer with shrimp in 2 guppy’s in one and endlers in one Trying to combat this Texas heat Iv got one in shade one is a 30+ gallon ice chest ( big difference) one is submerged in my 380 gallon plant tub with pump circulating all the water and one in my 1400 gallon koi pond circulating the water Fingers crossed

Jadren Aquatics not sure but right now they range from 72-76 but it’s only 80 today Oddly enough the lower temps were from the ones not in water but in shade

How about cladding the tub with insulation? You could wrap the insulation with some of that slat fencing. Very Hill-Billy like.

I just lost all my fish in a single day of this east tx heat... will a much bigger pond stay cool longer? i had a 110g pool, switching to a new 1400g pool tmorrow, hoping itll hold temp better....

I make lids out of 1/4" wire mesh. I don't mind the hillbilly look so I just cut 'em big and bend the edges around but if I wanted to be all citified I'd build a wooden frame

Hillbillydom at it's finest !! LOL I have the opposite problem here. Summer nights stay in the upper 40s, sometimes dropping down to freezing. If I do a summer tub this year, I will have to drop a heater in it

Poor Jen, you'll have to get potted plants to surround the tub. Like golden cane palms and other smaller palms or lots of succulents like agave. Plants will probably keep it cooler. Thanks for the update, I was wondering how it was going.
