Best thing I found to darken the heel and the toe to look natural is some wax - paraffin or beeswax or some combo of that - and either a hair dryer or heat gun. Take the wax and rub it on the shoes, trying to keep the right balance between minimal and noticeable, and then heat it up. You can rub it in as it melts. Then, you can just keep repeating that as much as you want. Looks very natural.

Just a tip I was born in the Village that DMs were all made in the 1960s70s80s and the ENGLISH made DMs are still made . Just polish your new boots with black polish . We had ox blood DMs at school but the school said only black footwear so we just polished them black. Two weeks later they look like this .

Before yo had electricity, did your boots get distressed by using them to push wood down into the open fire when the flames were too high to use your bare hands, along with crushing the embers down at the end of the day, or when you were going out. In my younger days, we always wore DM's and rolled our frayed jeans up when we were burning the rubbish, or stomping grass fires out without giving it a second thought.
