Thank you for this video, great content. I had the same no crank, no start problem on my 2008 Mazda5 but the solution to my case was simpler. It turns out the car cannot sense my transmission is in park and it started up right away when I put it in neutral. I went through the fuse boxes and relay testing but decided to test the park/neutral lockout first before I jack up the car to look at the starter.

@Nathan Jordan so with my Mazda5, the problem was combined with a very stiff shifter. I live in Canada so rust is a problem, and the car wasn't driven during COVID. It turns out the cable lock lever was heavily rusted and it worked fine after the rust was cleaned off with a wire wheel, and restored the full range of movement for the gear lever. I didn't have to replace any parts.

Wow.. Perfect great tutorial video.. I'm having intermittent starting issues.. I went through the same checklist. We do hear click when push start button touched ( not sure why sometimes start button light some time red other green will KZread next) , new battery 1 month, connections good, didn't have a multi meter but fuses looked good , did healthy thing, neutral thing( but can't shift to N if off so confused)... It did start with a large AAA jump start but not with a car jump. Hmm,? Need to check battery starter fuse. And finish your tutorial lol .I just wanted to say great video so far. I appreciate it as a female

Most cars will unlock the shifter if you have the key in the on position (double tap push start button without your foot on the brake), and then with your foot on the break the shifter should be unlocked. Although, since you said it started when AAA jump started your vehicle, but it didn’t when you tried, maybe you need to confirm that your battery is good and that your starter wiring is good as well. I suggest buying a multi meter, and checking the voltage on your battery. If it’s below 12.2 volts then your battery may have a dead cell, and thus not have enough cranking amps to spin your engine over

I enjoy these automotive whodunits! Diagnosis is fascinating. Your next challenge is to try to video the process of removing and replacing that bad starter. I've had good luck with starters, but my cousin has a Mazda 3 just like this one. Good luck to you!

My Mazda 3 06 hatchback has the same issue, when I go to turn on the car everything is on but it just won’t start and the days it do start is on rainy or cold days but if it’s really hot my car completely doesn’t wanna turn on, so I’m thinking of buying a new starter after watching this video

Hey. My 07 mazda 3 HB was in the shop for 5 weeks. I was remote/off grid when my flexplate broke. (July 21st) I got my mazda back today (august 22nd) 4 hours into my drive southbound, this exact issue occurred after i pumped $50 worth of gas at a barrie onroute. I did all the diagnosing I could without tools on hand. And well… I’m stranded again. This time not so remote… I called caa and paid the $680 for 172km. (1.5hr drive) Keep reading cause’ Heres the bloody kicker and the potential trick to start your zoom zoom. the mazda dealership won’t share this “quickfix” with you btw. They will say they fixed it and charge you for a diagnoses. Now… As I watched that tow truck drive away with my $680… I cranked my ignition from OFF to RUN 3 times in rapid succession. (this “trick” or function is used to reset/clear a check engine light without an obd scanner. I learnt it from a mazda service manual 4 years ago) My experience tells me, doing this “reset” the relay or the solenoid so, it turns out the darn trick can restart a car that doesn’t crank, turn over. Yet has power. This wont work if something critical is in-fact broken or faulty. If it starts… you know your parts are actually ok (for now) and the computer had a hiccup.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a classic no crank no start, and that “reset” trick with the key worked for you after the tow. I can tell you that key reset trick you did was just a coincidence that it worked. If that is in fact how you preform that reset / clear codes, that is not enough to allow an engine to crank. Just a coincidence in this case. Because it started after the tow, it leads me to believe your starter solenoid may be going bad. But it could still be a number of things like a bad battery connection or faulty security system

Did that solve your problem? I would have checked the neutral safety switch, too, since the problem was intermittent.

I have an intermittent starting issue right now! Good battery , I don't alternator as no problem during long drive, it wouldn't start with a car truck jump but did after AAA jump ... After long drive started no problem.. I'll check the neutral switch.. # rookie girl mechanic 😅

What if the starter is good ? I check my fuses and they were good . The relay I clean up a bit and replace it as well. But still no crank

If the starter will spin when you apply power directly to the starter (bypassing all the wiring) then you know the starter is probably good and it’s something else preventing the starter from spinning. If you are not getting 12V power at the starter wiring when turning the key, then check your starter relay. Sometimes that could be controlled by your security system. You also need to make sure the clutch safety switch is working or the park/neutral switch if auto trans.

Question, why would this be happening to my mazda only after driving? When engine is cooled down it starts up completely fine

No crank no start when warm? It could still be a starter solenoid failing as the engine bay temps warm up, causing high resistance and therefore the starter isn’t able to get enough current to be spun.

So basically I think I have a bad starter but it's a little different my car catches in smoke everytime I start it and I saw that white heavy smoke can come from the starter because it is bad the car still starts but it's been getting worst and worst to start changed the thermostat no head gasket leak everything is fine and I think it's gotta be my starter

Smoke coming from the starter means there’s too much current going through that starter circuit. There’s a short somewhere, whether it’s the solenoid, the starter motor, or within the starter wiring itself.

@@eygamereygamer9924 as I said based off your description, it’s gonna either be a bad starter or bad wiring to the starter :) You could always try pulling the starter off and spinning it on a bench (safely) by giving it power and seeing how it free spins without the load of the engine compression. But if you’re gonna pull the starter off you might as well replace it while you’re there :) Either way you definitely will need to check the wiring to the starter and confirm there are no shorts or burnt wires

Am having a similar issue with my 2008 mazda 3 hatchback but still no crank no start. I already replaced the battery, starter, and the starter relay, i also checked for any blown fuse but they all seem to be fine. The car does have power and i also try jumping it using jumping cables but nothing happened . Do you Any other suggestions that might help ? Thanks in advance.

Do the lights flash sporadically? As in, is the security system triggered? The red security light to the left of the steering wheel (by the dimmer switch) would be flashing constantly if so

@@chamakiitoh23 yup! If that goes off and is triggered you won’t be able to crank the engine. You’ll still hear the fuel pump turn on but the key won’t crank the engine over. But again, the red light by the dimmer switch would either be flashing or solid red

@@chamakiitoh23 to reset a triggered security system on these Mazdas, all it should take is press lock and unlock on your key fob a couple times. But what worked for me was disconnecting the battery, waiting 10 mins, put the key to the on position, and then reconnect the battery. I must stress that you must be careful when connecting the battery with the key in the on position, as current will immediately start flowing once you connect the terminal

Seems like a security issue. Try doing a security re-learn. For this Mazda the only method that worked for me was to have the battery off, put the key in the ignition in the on position, and then reconnect the battery and start the car
