How to declutter your mind -- keep a journal | Ryder Carroll | TEDxYale

Being busy doesn't always mean being productive. Ryder Carroll shares the story of how a system he developed to manage his childhood attention deficit disorder now helps people worldwide achieve their goals with greater efficiency and satisfaction.
Ryder Carroll is a digital product designer and inventor of the Bullet Journal. He was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, but now lives in Brooklyn, NY. He enjoys serving as the Lead Designer at Idean in New York City. He's been featured by the LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Bloomberg, Vogue, and Mashable.

    Summary: 1. Create a Mental Inventory (map) : - Things you need to do - Things you should do - Things you want to do 2. Ideation: For each item in inventory, ask yourself: 1. Is it vital? 2. Does it matter? If answer is no for both questions, cross that item off your list 3. Set goals: Break big goals into actionable little projects, that satisfies: - No barriers (doesn’t depend on anything) - Clearly defined tasks - Takes less than a month (If not, split) 4. Update your map 5. Form a habit Recap: (RID) - R: Reflect Declutter your mind by creating a mental inventory. Get rid of the things that don’t matter - I: Ideate: Focus on things that interest you by designing small actionable projects. - D: Dedicate: Get into a daily habit of updating your mental invetory.

    While I was listening to this Tedtalk I was ordering my first bullet journal. Then I saw you could buy stencils for the bullet journal. 12 minutes and 50 seconds later I've spent $100, and not heard anything this guy has said. So I've saved this video to an adhd playlist I created (that I'll hopefully look at tomorrow).

    it was really an eye opening video to me, i always thought of journaling but was never able to , i was stuffed with different videos about bullet journaling, today i luckily found the of the person who founded bullet journaling. As i face the same condition like his i.e (ADD), i've been really motivated and dedicated to start bullter journaling. Thank You Sir.

    Years ago, when I was working on a project management degree, I started describing the project scope in terms of three lists: must, should, and could. The must was the minimum deliverable, the should was anything that could be added within the available money and time, and the could was anything that could be added with more money and time but generally only if all the musts and some of the shoulds were done.

    The Bullet Journal system changed my life! I, too, struggled with ADD, though I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 30s. I tried planners more times than I can count, but my life just doesn't fit into tiny premade boxes. My bookshelves are lined with journals, where I tried to keep track of my many, varied thoughts and interests. But with no organization, it's often a major hassle to find what I am looking for. The Bullet Journal appeared on my radar about a year or so ago and immediately had my attention. Simple, organized, and custom made by me, for me. Perfect. Thank you. I can't begin to express how big an impact it has had on my life.

    I don't have ADD but I do have anxiety. Bullet journaling helps me identify the things I need to do and what I'm anxious about. It helps me plan in advance so I feel calmer when I comes to making plans.

    I just started writing on the next available page. (It was right in the middle of my "Dailies.") If I run across a video that has a lot of valuable information in it, I will take notes on the next available page. Then, because I Index it, I will be able to access that info whenever I need it. This video had lots of good info, and it helped clarify why I love the Bullet Journal system. I just realized, I should have asked, do you use the Bullet Journal system?

    What I love about this talk is that it is valuable for people of all ages and backgrounds. This lecture contained the most concise and actionable information in just a few minutes than all of the college (including grad-courses) and professional lectures that I have experienced as an engineer, project manager, mom. I can see that Ryder truly uses what he talks about. Good job!

    Wow. This is powerful Thank you for this. I've been struggling for years. It's been a while but yesterday, I just broke down not knowing what to do anymore. Feeling overwhelmed. Not being able to think straight. Could hardly breathe. I have been unconsciously journaling once in a while for years but I recently discovered the wonders of it. So I got myself a traveler's notebook and have started intentionally journaling. It helps unload all these thoughts and feelings and at the same time organize them.     People are losing the essence and the wonders that time has to provide when well administered. Family pleasures, joys with friends, peace and silence in the moments of reflection that are very important for our intellectual development in the professional environment as well as in the personal environment. Technology has developed and accelerated the search for this information and has expanded the creativity of many people for fast and strong internet access, but we can not lose our ability to interact socially because of this. With Bullet journal it is incredible and efficient and best of all it gives you the creative freedom to choose how information will be released creating a healthy and nostalgic environment that is when we consult our day to day, analyze our achievements and satisfaction Of the task completed.     Thank you! I too have dealt with ADD for the better part of my life! Journaling has helped much... I stayed away from it for a few years, now I am picking up my journal again and focusing on the important, discarding the junk and enjoying the peace between thoughts

    It seems that my life - at work and socially -is all about a disconnect between what I want to do and what everyone else wants me to do. So I try to speed up and multi task so I can do both. And now this Ted Talk has made me see that. I think I can use the bullet journal to help me track both so I can allocate separate hours to each group in my work.

    It's linenfold panelling. I don't think I'd call it "funky" - it's a very traditional style of carving wooden panels that's been used for centuries. :)

    As a busy student, I didn't always take the time to do my mental inventory, but now, I have my bullet journal, which help to do a mental inventory. But I was thinking about a way to improve even more this wonderful system for my ADD with focusing on the task. I focus on the task, I'm not a lunar person. The Bullet Journal has helped me to have a better focus on tasks by putting them in little pieces. Thank you Ryder Carroll, this video was very helpful. (sorry for my written English, I'm from Quebec City, Canada)

    I've been watching a lot of BuJo videos this month. I'll start using the February. Hope it helps me for this year. If it useful for me I'll probably use for long time. I have ADD, Anxiety and some Panic... I'm always too nervous about doing things, and I end up doing too much, but not what I should be doing. Really hope BuJo helps me on organising my time and what I have to do without losing myself all the time

    I'm a really lazy person, and I procrastinate a lot. I'm also impatient and lose interest in things very quickly. Bullet Journal has caught my attention. I would like to start one for February. I hope this helps me, and I hope I don't lose interest in it or think of it as a chore.

    I also started this April. I had some difficulties but I'm figuring it out as I'm going by. It's almost funny that I discovered the cure(though it's actually not a cure, but I couldn't find a better word) before I got to know that I have ADD. I used to keep a pocket notebooks. But then I discovered about Bullet journal and I have loved it since. I hope it helps you too. Just start it, don't be discouraged by the problems that you may face.

    I have had adhd since childhood and wasn’t formally diagnosed and treated until age 35. I’ve been bullet journaling, planning, and doing this for several years, and it really helps, but I still struggle daily with my adhd even though I’m on meds.

    Hey man i have a question. I feel like i have add (i'm 17), already told my mom and she thinks that i could have it too (based on a list with common signs of add). Should i see someone to diagnose me or should i just live with thought that i might have it. Its just that it would explain alot of things and maybe i could find peace in myself if i went to see someone who can tell me wether or not i have add. Is it worth it and would it help me?

    I first tried keeping a brain on paper as a kid and the neurotypicals in my life used to steal it and use it to mock me. I'm not talking the bully kids at school, I'm talking my family. These days it's a fricking trauma and ptsd trigger. It took me ages to figure out why I could never stick with such a useful tool for ADHD. Turns out it doesn't feel safe on a very primal level and really likes to poke at my RSD, so I avoid it. If any of you struggle with consistency trying to build this sort of skill, it might not just be ADHD. Consider getting with a therapist to dig deeper. It helped me make a little progress on my use of externalized mental organization.

    Something similar kept me from writing stories and doing art for a while. My situation was with bullies. They would rip up my art and steal my notebooks to tease me about what I wrote

    Lovely ideas .. I'm a content ADHD drifter.. fighting it and at the same time winning from my Curiosity ... Piece of advice: raise ur head. It gives a feeling of sadness..     justalurkr I find writing and journaling key. Throw out all distractions. Be intentional. Take time to reflect. In my experience writing by hand vs. using an app is more productive and creates just enough space to slow my mind down to focus.

    I keep trying to tell my doctor I have ADD - he agrees and says it is brought on by my Anxiety but won't help me.

    Amy Cain He really can’t do much. You need to speak with a psychologist. They’ll help and help you get medication if needed.
