In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of www.iamalpham.com and www.aaronmarino.com, discusses 5 tips to overcome social anxiety. Social anxiety is something that can be beaten if you take action and control of the situation. You deserve to be happy and experience great times with good people. This video will help you deal with social anxiety and provides some helpful tips to overcome anxiety.
Do you get nervous and a little self conscious when you walk into a room of people you don't know? Butterflies and anxiety are normal when getting up and giving a speech in front of people. Social anxiety is beyond that-- it's an absolute fear. It's so strong that it prevents you from going places and doing things. It's limiting happiness and the ability to socialize.
Social Anxiety Triggers
Aaron Marino of alpha m. says social anxiety an irrational fear of embarrassing yourself or getting intensely scrutinized. Alpha covers triggers: meeting new people, being the center of attention, making small talk, public speaking, being called out in class, eating in public, going out on a date, using a public bathroom.
Do You Have Social Anxiety?
Warning signs are stressing and being anxious about doing everyday things; worrying for weeks before an event; feeling that you constantly being judged or picked apart. Behavioral symptoms are deciding not to go to attend an event, bringing along a friend, standing in the background, or drinking before going to an event. If you have more fear than fun, take the steps to get your social anxiety in check.
Getting Social Anxiety Under Control
1.Challenge your own negative thoughts.
2.Learn to control your breathing.
3.Face your fear.
4.Seek professional help such as a therapist.
5.Medication.

Have you thought about doing a search for groups in the area that have similar interests such as yourself? You're not alone. Possibly adopting interests that you've always wanted to at your age.

Yeah teachers shouldn't bully their student, teachers should help and support their students. I remember the time when my math teacher mention that "you're getting low marks because you have low self esteem" in front of the whole class. Either she's picking on me or she's wanted me to change.

That kind of question doesn't help anyone. They need to be patient and help you along. It's not impossible to overcome it, but it can be difficult especially without help. My mother would always nudge me to speak up to people. Years later I finally had to explain to her that it's equivalent to stage fright and she finally understood why I was reluctant to speak and wanted to hide even into my 20's.A friend of mine who has been fighting his social anxiety problem for years (he's in his 50's) has attached himself to Stoic philosophy as revealed by Marcus Aurelius. Basically it's this, everything that everyone has to say is their own opinion. Their opinions shouldn't matter nearly as much as your own. What you believe and what you speak is what IS important, not what others think. When you can get past your own insecurities and disregard what all the other idiots out there think, you will start to flourish.I wish all of you guys well. I struggle hardcore with it too and I'm 37. Just keep plugging away at it and you guys will be okay.

@@redm6n it's because the fear is from being judged or humiliated so we use our friends as a crutch . Good friends will always have your back and it eases our mind. Normally if someone challenges you in public, you may freeze up and act inauthentic. Being hyper aware of every pair of eyes staring, judging your next actions. I think social anxiety has a lot to do with people who strive to save face. You may have a bad relationship with your gf but you will be damned if it doesn't look great on the outside. You want to conform your outward appearance to good examples. Anything negative only draws attention and singles you out from the crowd. I hate it so much

That's interesting. I suffer horribly from social anxiety but not in this case. I guess I feel like cashiers see hundreds of people a day, maybe thousands a week so I'm easily forgettable and then I have no reason to be nervous? I guess that's how it goes for me. But, talking to a woman... forget it. That's a very isolated case and she won't forget about me if I'm trying to hit on her. Then I can never visit that establishment again! Lol.

Which is a huge problem, because i don't have life at all. No family, no friends, no relationships, nothing. I struggle sometimes even when i need to go to grocery store... I couldn't force my self to go to a barber for the last 3 weeks to get a haircut... It's ridiculous. I'm thinking about suicide every day, but can't even do that because of the same problem. I tried forcing my self going out there, doing stuff, going on my first date, but in the end anxiety just got worse.

I dont even know if i have social anxiety or not. I used to be a strong extrovert and my first instinct is to talk and engage with others. I always think a lot, I spend hours and hours sitting down to ponder about my life, the things i do around me, but none of those have actually prevented me from being an extrovert until recently (a few months), I have noticed changes with myself. I have been completely avoiding people and I just simply not willing to talk to people. Prime reason is i have eventually realised how judgemental people can be, and how they always like to implement their own standards on others and selective of friends that simply disgusts me. I have always been the type to have low expectations on myself, as well as others. But obviously not everyone is like that and it made me realise about all the stupid things i did as an extrovert. I ponder about everything i did in my life and always tried to understand how others think of me from their perspective. And i think its the constant thinking that shut me off one day and it has been like this until now. I thought I might have depression, but it may also be me developing social anxiety. I dont wish to seek a therapist because talking to my friends is already getting harder and harder, much less a stranger that talks to you simply because its their job. I guess online is better in a sense we all dont know one another so i guess it's really the only form of help i can get from others without much connection. And yes, i did try very hard to go back to being the extrovert i am, but i cant even bring myself to smile anymore and opening my mouth is just further proof that i should have just kept quiet from the start. Idk if people would even see this but writing this at least will make me feel better (?) Idk but someone pls help i need some answers. My friends noticed my changes but i have never talked to them about it. Those who approached me, im sorry to say but i simply do not want to talk anymore

And I can never give myself to talk about my opinion or anything vulnerable about me. Cause I’m scared of peoples judgement. And then later that night I’m just going to torture myself about speak what’s in my head to other person.

I get that feeling, honestly it doesn't bother me much how people perceive me because that's only their interpretation and not the actual me. What shuts me down if the fear that their perception of me rubbs them the wrong way enough to get them to subconsciously target me when they are in a bad mood. My mother was verbally, physically and emotionally abusive. I found that she'd targeted me when she was in a foul mood even if I did everything right I was still wrong. After I realized that I became cautious about being seen as a target everwhere I went because you don't know who is willing to go how far to hurt you because of their subconscious desires... it's really hard to exist sometimes. I'm tall so I tend to get noticed whenever I walk into a room and that instantly sets off my fear, which causes my anxiety sweats that make me stink like I haven't showered in weeks and adds shame to how I'm feeling and more anxiety because I know people can smell me... I don't go out much. It's not worth the effort.

I was married for 10yrs. I was totally devoted to my marriage and family. Lost the few friends I had. Now I'm divorced with severe anxiety. It's kept me from working. Spend my days at home. It's pretty sad, I can't seem to step out my comfort zone. When I try I end up breaking down and having a panic attack. I'm tired of everyone confusing anxiety with shyness. Not even close. Your mind is your worst enemy. I can't even go to the grocery store without having to mentally prepare myself. I tell people I have anxiety and they try to relate or tell me to just get over it. It's frustrating.

Social Anxiety makes us our own worst enemy and one of the first things I recommend you doing through my experience is don't hold it in ok, go speak to a therapist or talk to a best friend, go online to chat rooms about social anxiety. purchase a little note book and write everything down in detail and take it with you everywhere. You have to fight it and keep at it, don't give up, keep your head up high you can do it, you're amazing don't let anyone let you down. You got this far keep pushing, it isn't an easy battle at all but keep going. Honestly you need to push yourself, I know it's easier said than done I mean I'm not saying jump in the deep end as that will cause a panic attack but do a tiny little push each day. If you need more information. Give us a message as i know how awful social anxiety is as i used to be the guy that sat in a corner terrified of moving and now I get a buzz off of helping people and making people feel better. Have a great day :-)

So how can I talk about it with other people when my own family don't understand me? I mean I know they don't want me to believe that it's real or let it get to me, but it's always there, it never goes away. I think I can relate to this. For me, if I am walking around places that I will only see once, anxiety won’t be THAT bad. I will be okay. Like a normal person who gets nervous. But when I talk to people I know or see everyday, I can’t function. Like I can’t even pick things up or eat properly. Around my family, I can eat, and do simple things, but my self esteem is also low so I talk at a low volume and when it gets really bad I would whisper. I am also always very careful. Like, I flinch when I hear a family member coming, when in reality I’m not even doing anything wrong. I would just be sitting there in thought and flinch when someone is coming because I don’t want them to see that I am deep in thought. Do you feel any of these things?

I can’t get out of my room without looking in the mirror for 15 minutes before I see my family. I’m scared to walk infront of people because I think people think I walk weird. I can’t sit normally on a chair. I sit unforcomtrable and my back hurts. I’m scared to change seating position because Im scared I’ll do it in a weird way and people will judge me. If I need a pen, a paper, etc.. in the classroom I’m scared to go get it because I don’t wanna stand up because I don’t want people to think I stand in a weird way. I’m scared to reach my hand up for the teacher because I think people will think I reach my hand in a weird way. I’m scared to hold pens because I think people think I’m holding it weird. I’m never on PE lessons because I don’t want to move or exercise infront of people. Sometimes I hold my breath in a quiet room because I think people will judge the way I breath and think that I breath loud. The same with speaking. I’m scared to laugh because I think people will judge me because of the way I laugh. I’m scared to hold my phone because I think people will think how I hold my phone is weird. I’m never comfortrable, not even when I’m alone. I’m very insecure about my body and I’m always late to meetings, school, etc.. because I have to look in the mirror for a while and do a lot of potisions that I will probably do during the day. Such as standing up, sitting, walking, drinking water, eating, holding my phone and more before going outside. When I’m outside I panic even if nobodys there. I’m also apart of the LGBTQ community (If I come out I will be hated by everyone and I will probably not be able to survive a day) and I think I might have a depression about it (Not diagnosed with it) Neither am I diagnosed with social anxiety but I’m almost certain I have it. I also have no motivation to live anymore. Also, let’s not forget the fact that I have no friends. Thats the story of my life. If you read this whole thing I’m very thankful and I’m sorry for sharing so much. I just needed to get it out for once.

+david m Accepting is actually the best thing you can do! When you accept your anxiety you are actually not fighting and giving a fuck about it anymore. When you fight your anxiety with all your power, you are just making the anxiety ten times worse. Try not to give a fuck about your anxiety and negative thoughts (converted anxiety from your brain) and just let it be there. Anxiety is just like the anoying school bully. When you give it attention it will only stay and become more annoying. But when you accept that it's there and not give it so much attention anymore it will eventually go away. This is why isolating yourself when you have anxiety is the worst thing you can do. Then you are just dwelling or your negative thoughts/anxiety and making it only bigger and bigger. The true cure is just going out there. See your anxiety as a motivator to do things. When you are afraid of a social thing, do it! It will make you feel so good afterwards! Start small by maintaining eyecontact with someone and smile, or just getting out of your house and go for a walk. Make a growth list with all the things that are out of your comfort zone and try to do them one by one. You are gonna see that anxiety is nothing more then random noise in your brain and that only you are the one who is in charge. Not your anxiety. When you feel uncomfortable or really anxious just accept the feelings. How does your body feel? What is your heart doing? Try to see what your body is doing and accept it. Don't fight it, just let it and the thoughts be. This will be very hard at first but it is like training in the gym. The more and longer you do it, the better you will become. Have a nice day and I hope this helps!

Great tips! I’ve lived with social anxiety most my life and recently found out it was an actual disorder. It’s exactly like you describe:( At 43 I now feel like I wasted so much of my life. I now take medicine for it. I still get anxious at the thought of doing certain things, but notice I’m much more comfortable once I’m actually there.

Thank you for your videos about anxiety, self-confidence, motivation etc.!! ..and sharing your own experience! Psychologist would basically say the same things and tips..but the way you're "presenting" them is so authentic, that it's really hitting the buttons. I do actually believe what you say because you seem so persuaded of it. I know you're also running a business with this channel, but business combined with good intentions transferring to actions result in..good actions..so, again, thank you so much for what you're doing!!!

I’ve been going through this for years now. I’ve always tried to beat it but it just seems impossible at times. I thought I was the only one who actually went through all of these different feelings, until I found this video and realised from the comment section how common this problem really is. There’s allot of things I can relate to what people are going through... the main goal is to stay strong and have hope that things will eventually, get better as time goes on. People are right what they say, you’re wasting your time talking to someone who has never experienced Social Anxiety before! I hope everyone finds a way to get through this and to live a better life x

The fear of getting married most of us have :) thinking you are marrying the wrong person who will change you after the wedding, losing your freedom and many moments by yourself, this is a reality not a fear. I have that too but with the right person everything will be clear and by then try to invest in yourself and change things you don't like in the present in order for you to be prepared for your future spouse.

I have suffered from "Severe Social Anxiety" for years!!! all throught my teens, twenty's and now thirtys. I have never been on a date and have been single most of my life, never had a real girlfriend and I am now 34. I have been told that I am attractive and I do believe that but my social skills are just out the window, very socially awkward. I have people tell me that i am stuck and have a large ego but not at all....just introverted and shy. Its getting better though!! I socialize a lot more at work but I need to overcome this. This is a good video and hopeful to all who have it, it gets better for you too. God Bless!!!

Hello anyone suffering from social anxiety, there is something that alpha forgot to mention and I consider it the most valuable tip. Don’t focus on yourself and how you fee or other people fee about you and instead focus on what other people are feeling about themselves. I have had a mild depression before for some reasons and this helped me to overcome it. Wishing you all the best

Social anxiety is more cruel to men than women. Guys are always expected to make the first move and initiate things. People will talk to shy and quiet girls but most people don't really make the effort to talk to shy guys. It's like if a girl is quiet, it's understandable. But when a guy's quiet/shy, people just thinks he doesn't wanna talk. This may not be true to everyone but in my life, it is very real.

The reason for my social anxiety is not fear of embarrassment. It's usually because I have trouble finding the word to say. I'm nervous that I won't know what to say and that there will be awkward silences in the conversation, which happens to be my least favorite thing. Any tips?

Damn, this was almost a year ago! Since posting this comment I hardly ever experience silences in a conversation. Over time, I adapted certain skills and conversing is a breeze. Sometimes I have trouble, but I've realized that a conversation takes two. If the other person is not participating or putting in effort, it may not be a worthwhile conversation and I shouldn't stress about it. I used to be incredibly shy and I've come so far. Proof that everyone has hope!

My mother doesn't believe in social anxiety, just tells me to step out of my comfort zone and that's it's "all in my head." I'm only 14 and I want to get rid of this before I get older. I don't want to miss any experiences in high school and college. I've already been invited to a birthday party this year and freaked out several months prior, I ended up staying home and crying about not having the balls to go. Whenever my name is called in class there's sometimes remarks like "oh, who's that?" Or "hey, forgot you were in this class." I know they don't mean to be rude but it makes me feel worse about everything.

I've been suffering with social anxiety for about 6 years. I've learned how to deal with it a little bit more each year. Last year I couldn't even get out of my house because I thought the whole world was against me. I couldn't even keep a job because my coworkers thought I was weird because I didn't like socializing so they started picking on me and me being at my lowest moment in life I decided to quit. I'm glad that I've gotten this far because all I could think of last year was to end it. Now I have a job that I like, a cat that loves me to death, my bf who's been very supportive in my journey and I get to go to places where a year ago I couldn't even imagine me stepping a foot in there. Yeah I still get major anxiety but I've learned to let them just pass by on their own, I don't even try to fight it anymore, if I do it tends to trigger my panic attacks. I want to be normal again. I hate being this negative and angry. I just hope my anxiety and depression go away for good one day.
