If people do this often you are weakening and thinning your dreads at the root,do its important that you don't do it obscessedly or often at all. Trust me I've had mine for about 4 years and I've learned my lesson and spoke to other people that made this same misstake. After all the point of dreads is to be minimalistic and low to no maitenance (except for washing every couple weeks with sulfate free soap or a apple cider vinegar, lemon juice soak etc.

@Wolfdizz not really. Over washing will make dreads super frizzy and not as tight. I am currently dealing with the aftermath loll. Tucking in lose hair an frizzy with a crochet hook for the first time as we speak.

You said crochet correctly - crow-shay - and the hook you held up is technically a latch hook which is similar to a crochet hook but does a different type of crafting -- a lot of people call them crochet hooks, though. Back comber is ko-merr, at least in the US.... The "b" in comb / comber is silent and the "o" is a long "o". I love your videos and your accent is the most wonderful thing to listen to! You're one of the people who have helped me feel better about wanting to go on my own dread journey.

Its amazing the differences in texture of hair. If I get new growth or loose hair I use a holding gel or formula and palm roll and or twist to add the new growth to a lock. In no time the new hair will just attach. tfs

Very informative thank you ;) I have had my dreads over 4 years, they were made by back combing and crochet hook. I leave mine a lot of the time to just do their own thing, but about every 6 months or so I like to get a tidy up (maintenance) and the woman that does it uses a crochet hook and it only takes about half an hour. This video has inspired me to give it a go myself next time, so thank you very much.

@@joannagonzalez8209 So long as you're gentle and you're being sure to moisturize with oils and keeping it clean you'll be fine. I'm guessing from your last name that you have pretty straight hair, so if you really want to section your dreads instead of letting them form on their own then I would suggest the twist and rip method - it knots your hair pretty well and typically doesn't damage it as much as back-combing can. I think it's a lot harder to mess up so long as you're listening to someone who knows what they're doing, otherwise they may be giving you poor directions. I'm pretty sure Gunther The Great has a video on twist and rip, he's a good source for hair info.

@@joannagonzalez8209 yeah for sure, most of the hair you lost is most likely hair that you shed naturally but was trapped in your dreads. It's possible that you were very rough with your dreads and the majority of it wasn't normal shedding, but you don't SEEM like the type of person who would just rip at their hair with no regard for its health lol. It's also possible, but unlikely, that you're balding but I think you would probably know if you were balding

Oh goodness stop!! 😣 its such awful advice to give to people because they think it's safe. Long strands lock up then pushing an object in the hairs they have to move or break for it to pass through. Each time causing more damage, those broken pieces shift in the dread sometimes sticking out causing a poking sensation or a frizzy look. Then you think is time for more maintenence when it's just compounding the problem. Time will get you the most healthy strong mature dreads then any human hand can create. Dont want to sound like im chastising you, trying to inform you your hurting your hair!!!!

It's obvious you should be careful, and consider how often you work on your dreads in this way. But to tighten them a little or put loose hair back into a dread once in a while doesn't harm your hair in the long run. As I also mention in the video: I don't do this very often, and when I work on them I still try to be careful and consider how much I harm them.

I agree. I used a crochet needle long time ago, and first of all, the ends of my locks, that i've used it the most on, are totally loose now. Besides, I have a lot of hairs that sticks out everywhere, because I've used it too much. Then I prefer using rubberbands to make loose hairs stick to the lock, and do the rest on it's own. Oh and before i leave this comment here, I love your videos!

Amalie Flosshatten I think rubber bands are a bad idea because over time they eat thru your hair. Maybe it was just the ones i used, small brightly coloured, i kept them in indefinitely and eventually they'd ruin the hair.
