New Dreadlocks - First Month Week By Week

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you want to see more videos of my dreadlock journey, please subscribe to this channel. Also, leave me a comment if you have dreadlocks, have had dreadlocks or thinking about starting dreadlocks.
This is a weekly progression of my new dreadlocks during the first month after being started.
I show clips after 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks.
After three days my dreads looked very similar to when they were first started. Neat. Tidy. Yet fuzzy from sleeping on them. I have 54 baby dreads!
I washed my dreadlocks for the first time at 5 days of age. This was simply due to how itchy they were. Itching happens because the hairs were being pulled into the lock shape all over my head not because they were dirty or anything like that.
After the first week, I got my first loop which was really excited. Loops form when the loose hair is being pulled by tighter hairs around it.
At two weeks my dreads still looked like normal hair but also starting to tighten up. I decided to wash my hair then put it up in a ponytail to go to work that day which I do not recommend. This is how dreads can start smelling bad.
Three weeks in the loose hairs are everywhere. This is totally to be expected! Getting loose hairs is simply part of the process of maturing. I will most likely get my loose hairs taken care of with maintenance but that is another video. :)
After four weeks you can see all the loose hairs around my face. This area of hair is what Layla called "transitional hair" and therefore it doesn't like to dread or at least stay in the dreadlock. At this point, I had only washed my hair 3 times and usually wear it up in a ponytail-headband combo. I also like to spray my hair with distilled water and essential oils in the morning. I like the smell and it helps me wake up.
My dreadlocks were started 4/28/18.
I recommend my dreadlock stylist Layla

    I just did mine yesterday. My dad asked what I was doing to my hair. I told him dreading it. He said, "oh lord." But for the most part nothing about my hair surprises him because when I was a teen I had a Mohawk.

    Hi Sarah I'm 55yrs old and I have had my locs for 3wks. I'm going in for maintenance in a week. I have real hair extensions made into dreads and attached . I'm so happy I finally did this ! I had long hair most of my life. After cutting it shorter and shaving it, I grew it out to my shoulders. I had this professionally done for my birthday. I have enjoyed watching your videos . Thank you

    I started my love two months ago, and was worrying that they weren't locking properly. I'm glad I found this video because they are pretty much on track! I still have a few that just won't lock however. The shorter ones are stubborn!

Like you, I researched a long time before finally deciding to do it :) the loose baby hairs on top of my head and around the back of my neck worries me because I'm worried my hair isn't locking :( this video made me feel better about them!!

    Essential oils like tea tree helps the itch. And you dont even neccesarily have to get maintenance done often you can back comb the ends and palm roll them everyday. Palm rolling is super important especially on naturally straight hair.

  • @Dismal626

    @Dismal626

    3 жыл бұрын

    they're falling apart because they're new dreadlocks and thats what they're supposed to do when they're new. let them do their thing, they will lock up on their own after u get past the awkward initial stage. if you maintain them you prevent them from truly locking up and the only way they will stay that way is with more and more maintenance or if your hair is extremely coarse and curly. so unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars on something that your body can do by itself if you give it enough time, or if you cant stand the sight of any loose hair, then there's no reason to do it

  • @jfacedoesstuff4455
    @jfacedoesstuff44556 жыл бұрын

    I've had mine for 8 months. Yeah, you might want maintenance in a couple months--you don't have to, and your hair will still dread up even if you don't, but I found that maintenance made my head feel much more comfortable. The loose hair wasn't horrible, but I was shocked how much more comfortable it was when my hair wasn't tangling and pulling at my scalp. Not to mention the fact that I don't have to separate as often now 😂. I'll keep an eye out for you in the group 😊

    Jface does stuff that's interesting. I just checked out your 7-month video and your dreads look so good! I hope mine look like that. I haven't thought my loose hair as uncomfortable but, you're right, that hairs are pulled when I run my fingers through two separate or palm roll. My dread stylist taught me a technique to pull on the dreads to try to minimize loops. Have you heard of this?

  • @jfacedoesstuff4455

    @jfacedoesstuff4455

    Sarah Thornburg yeah, I've heard you can stretch them to minimize loops. I've never done it, though. The few loops I've gotten, I've loved and wanted to keep. 😂 I just love the character!

    Yes, I do think it would make your hair look thinker. You know longer shed hair with dreadlocks so all those extra hairs get stuck in your locks and make you hair look fuller. Melony I wash with a tea tree shampoo made by Jason brand. I've been using it for years. Even before getting my dreads started. Although it's not a "dreadlock shampoo" I think it does a good job. No residue. What do you use?

    There are a few readily available ones. Trader Joe's Tea tree Tingle, Allafia African Black Soap in Peppermint, California Baby Tea tree Lavender. The reason I asked is because so much of your hair has become loose. You may just have very silky hair and need something more drying to prevent any slip.

  • @SarahThornburg
