How To Cycle In The Wind

How To Cycle In The Wind
One of the thing many of is cyclists hate is riding into a head wind. Just how do you cycle in the wind?
If you live in the UK you will know all about cycling in windy conditions, especially after Storm Ciara and Stop Dennis.
There are many strategies us cyclists can use when the wind blows. In this film I share with you some of the main ways to make cycling in windy conditions just that little bit easier..

Hi Leonard - I was moaning about riding into the wind to a very experienced cycling friend of mine Wilf - he said - "don't let it bother you just put your head down and drop down a cog - don't try and fight it" - very simple advice but it really has helped me riding this winter. Thanks for the videos.

Such an awesome subject for a video. Here in NYC, two things that always happen. (1) Weather forecast is always wrong, and (2) head wind on your way out changes direction with you as you head back and remains an annoying head wind throughout the entire ride.

The bicycling gods, or wind gods, or somebody smiled on me today: My outward-bound ride (always uphill) was straight into a headwind. Returning home was downhill with a tailwind. Such things happen so rarely, I must celebrate them. But the wind will be in my face - both ways - again, soon. Alas. Great video, Leonard! No vegan cheese for me, thanks.

Sound advice. Here in the NC mountains the winds are literally every direction depending on which hollow you’re passing. I’ve been hit by strong gusts from all four sides in a quarter mile distance. Not riding during midday hours helps if you’re on a road bike which can get perilous but with an MTB and a bit of planning I can use it to brake without touching the levers, sort of like an exhaust brake on a large truck ( lorry). May the wind be always at your back !

I cycle about 50kms 3 times a week and this is how I do it. I do a circuit from my home in Swords, County Dublin into Dublin City and back again by way of Clontarf, Howth, Sutton, Portmarnock, Malahide and back to Swords again. But, if the wind is blowing a particular way, I do the same circuit, but this time in reverse. This works brilliantly for me. Those head winds for 40 odd kms are soul destroying and eat away at your energy. I've done it many times and it's a killer. Thanks for another great vid from you. I really like them.

Great, humorous, informative video. As I live on Cape Cod I face similar conditions on every ride and find your tips helpful. Riding the Cape Cod Canal path ( 15 miles roundtrip)can be 22 mph downwind and a heartbreaker at 8-9 mph coming back. Also, your advice to ride in wooded areas is great advice. The crazy windy days I ride through the lowland cranberry bogs with heavy vegetation and it makes wind negligible. I find the biggest aid to be riding a recumbent ( trike or 2 wheeler) as positioning really decreases wind resistance and of course the tight fitting Lycra suits and only weighing 170 lbs!

The reason why road bicyclists don't like wind is that they base their rides on length instead of time. You need to have a heart rate monitor and a timer, and then base your ride upon time and effort, not distance. Leave the odometer at home. And then windy rides become the most enjoyable rides, because you're basing your ride on effort and not by distance covered. Too many cyclists get obsessed with x miles.

Those weight weenies with their ultra-light bikes suffer double (especially with high rims) . My bike is pretty sturdy with low rims and I weigh it down myself so I'm good and stable (although aerodynamically challenged like a brick)... except for side wind gusts which almost blew me straight into the canal the other day.. scary stuff. I put on about a stone and a half this winter, and boy, cycling into a 20 mph head wind really depletes ones energy, far more than climbing up a steep gradient. I once cycled from the UK to Copenhagen and for two and half weeks rode into a mercilessly strong and unrelenting head wind. I took one look at that Pont du Normandy when I was cycling home to catch the ferry once and decided tp use the Caen port instead of Le Harve as those brigdes are a nightmare, having once crossed the Loire at its estaury ...never again !

Nice video! The first few times I rode in wind I couldn't figure out why I was struggling so much, as I had transitioned to cycling from running, so there always seemed to be a stiff headwind. In general, I ride a specific route as I know approximately how long it will take, and if wind makes me work a bit harder, so be it. That said, when I plan longer rides, I do take wind into account and do what you suggest...start with the headwind and get a boost with the tailwind on the return part of the loop.

Here in Tasmania , the wind ( from where I live in Kingston ) blows from the North in the morning ( head wind ) and from the south later in the day , however if I'm lucky the north wind won't change until almost home , the same thing with regard to the south wind , It will behind me on the first leg and against me on the return , but that's cycling ?

Very sound advice. If you are considering getting your kicks on Route 66; what Bobby Troup, who wrote the song, didn't mention is that if you Ride from Chicago to LA/ you get bastard headwinds all the way, At least I did. Hundreds of miles of it right on the nose and temperature around 30C. It was like riding into a blast furnace, very tiring. So tiring in fact that I bailed out after about 1000 miles. BTW according to Hambini the greatest thing you can do to improve your aerodynamics on your bike is ride on the drops; paying an arm and a leg for a fancy frame is pretty much a waste of money.

I used to hate right-to-left crosswinds when commuting. You end up leaning into the wind until you get passed by a bus. At that point the wind suddenly drops and it's like getting sucked across the road into the side of the vehicle.

First of all, lovely video/editing. Secondly, here in SW Florida the wind can be very strong (yesterday it was 16-18mph, no hills though). As the wind almost always blowing North to South (or vice versa), and as most rides are North/South, well you can do the math. Finally, inquiring minds want to know . . . you mentioned a couple videos ago that your freehub had stopped engaging during a ride. What was the issue?

Cycling in a head wind has two big advantages: You spend more time on your bike and you burn more calories. Ideal when you love cycling and you want to lose weight. Does there exist a "bicycle song" with words on the melody of "Candle in the wind" by Elton John. If not, I claim the title "Cycling in the wind" and all together we should make the lyrics.

@@jollygoodvelo I know. I longing for better weather. Still (wet) snow and a lot of wind. Last weekend I received a new (really new, the second in my life) bicycle. I'm curious because the bicycle was a surprise for my birthday. I didn't choose it. So I only noticed that it has two wheels and theoretically 24 gears. 3x8. It'll be more suitable to my height than the bicycle I rode on the last 4 years. Hopefully a maiden trip on Sunday (but I don't know if March 8th, 15th or 22th or even later, the weather is the boss)

For me (a rider of moderate weight), riding up a hill is hard and slow, but it feels natural to add power, the sensations all make sense, and there is a sense of accomplishment at the crest. A headwind, on the other hand, doesn’t engage the leg muscles in the same way, feels incongruous, and gives no sense of satisfaction whatsoever. Add a climb and headwind together and it feels like the world is plotting against me. Clearly, featherweight riders are built for climbs and heavier riders aren’t. But my guess is that even heavy riders would prefer a climb, rather than the wind, in front of their handlebars. True?

We got the train from Glasgow to Ayr, cycled from the west coast over to Edinburgh on the east coast and then the train back to Glasgow. The only reason I did it was because of a 24mph tail wind directly behind us all the way giving us an average of 19mph.
