How to Cut Your Hair in Layers WITHOUT Losing Length!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you ever had a bad experience in a hair salon? Tell me your stories in the comments!!! Thumbs up for more hair videos :D
I hope you find this method helpful, let me know how it goes for you if you cut your hair at home for the first time! I have been trimming my own layers and length since grade ... Idk. Sometime during high school, and I have been cutting my own bangs since I can remember. The few times I have gone to a salon to get my bangs or hair cut, it's been a disaster :( If you can relate, I hope this video helps you out and inspires you to learn!

I hate going to salons. I never go. Every time I think about it, I think about how many ways they can screw up my hair. And people who say, Calm down its just hair. It will grow.... People please.... It takes years to finally have it as long as you used to have it. I have to deal with this almost Half my life. 😾👊

So, I have very curly hair like you. I used to go to the hair dresser about 1-2 times per year until 2006. I went to this new salon and I sat down and my hair dresser gets this horrified look on her face and she like started to poke my hair, like she didn't want to touch it. She asked me what happened. I asked, what do you mean? And then she asked me: Did you fail at perming your hair at home or something? And I think I squeeked something like: No, I look like this. She refused to brush my hair, and said it would be best if I did it myself! Then she cut my hair very short (my curls need lenght to weigh them down) and now I looked like a clown. I couldn't wear my hair down for at least a year and I didn't set foot in a salon for 8 years...

Girl I would've told her with a very stern voice "NO, this is my natural hair". And don't be scared to go to a salon hun. A hairdresser is someone that you are PAYING to do a service for you. Every time I go to someone new, I start off by telling them that I am extremely anal about my length and texture so do not try to change it. Also, I tell him/her up front that "if I'm not happy with the cut or I feel like you took way too much off, I will not be paying or I will be expecting a discount"... Now I know this may seem a little arrogant and not many people have the personality to say something like this to a hairstylist, but it ALWAYS works because it makes the hairstylist EXTRA careful to satisfy you. If they think that there is a possibility that they won't be getting paid, they'll try their hardest to make sure you are happy so they will get paid lol. I've had horror stories in the past and I find that this is the only way for me to leave happy :)

I have 2 crazy hair nightmares. When I was 13 I wanted to be a blond so bad. Don't ask why, I don't even know. So I had just started at a brand new Jr HIgh School. And a girl I met had bleached her hair platinum blond. Every attempt I had with home hair dyes at that point only turned my hair bozo orange..of course. So I asked her how she did it..She said " I bleached it first." At 13 my feeble mind thought she meant she literally put bleach in her hair. So dumb ass me went home and did just that. I filled the bathroom sink with Clorox bleach and dipped my head in it for 45 minutes..Oh boy. You can only imagine. What hair I had left was a greasy orange. With some white here and there. Lots of bald spots. Lost my eyebrows in the process. It was bad. I had to go to my second day of Jr high in this new town like this. I didnt get as much grief as you would think I did. But it was bad. Took me like 3 years to have normal hair again. My second nightmare was not my fault. I had recently got a bob that I liked. My mom died and I went to get it trimmed for her funeral. I did a walmart hair salon. It started off fine, than she tried to "jazz it up". She asked me to stand, which I have never had anyone do in a salon during a hair cut. She screwed my hair up big time. I knew it right off but I did not say a thing.I had to go to the funeral like this. A few weeks later I had to go just get it cut off as short as you can get it without a scuzz. And for 11 years I did not get another hair cut. I got it to my rear and got cancer, lost 11 years of growth to chemo. Though the only reason I had grown it was over that bad Walmart cut.

I don't do salons anymore. They always chop off 4 or more inches when all I need is a trim. I have pretty healthy hair so it's not like they need to cut so much. The worst experience was when I went in to have my layers retouched. She just kept clipping and clipping even though I kept voicing my discomfort. She would say ohhh I'm just evening it out a little more. When all was said and done I ended up having Monica's from Friends 90s cut. I almost cried.

I have a long hair and i like to keep it long and add layers. Just like most of you mentioned here I went to a salon to get a style...the hair dresser guy kept telling me he wont cut it short then suddenly in the end he just pulled and cut it too short. I guess the salon people love to cut hair short.....professional hazard....its been two years. Juts because you are hair dresser you don't have right to decide on hair length of your clients.....

ReetuS it’s probably satisfying to them to cut it very short.😂😂😂😂 if they don’t see much difference at the end, they may feel like they did not do anything...so...in order for them to feel motivated, they make big changes. I think they simply get bored to cut one inch of hair from every client, becouse almost no one wants big changes. What they don’t think about is that the client won’t come back.

I've been waiting for this for so long literally my heart skipped a beat when I saw you uploaded this video 😋😍 Because I have curly hair and the worst hair experience I've had is that I wanted layers & I wanted long layers but I turned out having them but they were a straight across cut nd my hair was as long as yours but turned out REALLY short. 😩 I looked like a poodle 😢 since then I've never been back at a salon I just get my mom to cut the trims and my layers are almost full grown and have no volume in my hair now I can actually have volume nd keep the length thanks to you Alexsandra! I ❤️ you so much keep it up with the videos! xoxo💋

I think cutting up is what the pros call texturizing if I'm not mistaken. A blunt cut like you said is straight across. I read that thinning shears do the texturizing for you because it cuts every other piece its like a comb and you can cut across but it skips pieces so you just keep cutting and it does the work for you :)

One time I went to a "professional" salon to get my hair trimmed because it was going to be yearbook picture day &&what I asked for was to trim off some damaged split ends because they looked orange and made my hair look like a broom. I told the lady I wanted 3 inches cut off, && she said no problem. My hair hung down by my elbows, and after the haircut my hair ended up so short I looked like Buttercup from the PowerPuff Girls.! I was angry, but I didn't want to argue with the woman so I just payed and went straight to Sally's Beauty Store and bought some extensions to fix my problem.. After that incident, I just cut my own hair :) I've been doing this for atleast 3 years now..

I asked for long layers for my mid-back length thick naturally wavy auburn and strawberry blonde hair and got bizarrely chopped up shoulder length hair... I also asked for blonde highlights and left with half of my hair yellow. I've had my hair destroyed so many times that I'm starting to think that a lot of hair dressers are kids who messed up their doll's hair when they were little and never outgrew it...? I'm done with going to the salon to have my hair done. I do a better job myself than the majority of the hair dressers I've been to.

Oh my god.. I went to the salon and asked for a medium length hair that is at least under my chest area(medium, long, whatever y wanna call it). SHE LITERALLY CUT IT TO MY SHOULDERS!! Man, I said I wanted to make my hair thinner too since it's super thick. She took some sort of tool(razor comb?) and stated thinning it, and it sort of went shorter. I didn't say anything because I'm not the type of person who is mean haha!! I kinda just went with the flow. My hair grows super fast anyways, and today my hair is at my tailbone. This happened the summer of 2013 haha!! Ever since then I've been cutting my own hair:b I'm kind of scared to go to the salon, ever tho they are "professionals". But yeah. That's my story haha

I had been growing out my hair for two years, from a long bob. This summer I had reached my desired waist length and went to the hairdresser to get a blonde balayage on my natural dirty blonde. He screwed up, and I had to go back to get it fixed. I still didn't really like it after he fixed it, and so two months after that, I decided to go brown and get it done by another hairdresser. My roots were of my natural color and fading to a light blonde, I asked him to dye my hair dark golden brown. I ended up with medium brown roots and black ends, with blonde patch remaining. I asked him to fix it ( obviously!!) and so he bleached the ends and dyed over it. I spent 7 hours at the hairdresser to end up with an uneven brown/redish patchy hair mess, damaged hair as fuck. I had to cut it into a lob it was impossible to even run my fingers through it). Worst hairdresser experience ever. I have to grow out my hair all over :'(((

This tutorial was very very helpful. I researched several do-it-yourself tutorials, each with a slightly different method. Yours however, worked the best for me. My hair is very baby fine with a soft wave, and dirty blonde, requiring a gentle colorant. Because of this I stopped using curling irons and blow dryers years ago, in order to minimize damage. Hair salons were always so hard on my baby fine hair with all those harsh chemicals and aluminum foils, which caused half my hair to come out, and bleached it more than necessary - as well as the fact that they are just too scissor happy! As a result, I simply stayed out of beauty salons. I found a gentle non-ammonia colorant in the store, and simply let my hair grow down my back, only trimming the ends, with my husband's help for the back. As a result, I received numerous compliments for years, on my beautiful natural looking long blonde hair. Now, at 68 years old, my hair has been going through the post-menopausal thinning and fragility, so that I finally had to figure out a shorter style, as long hair meant the weight caused it to fall out more easily. . But, simply cutting it straight across no longer worked, as it looked too boring, and the wave did not fall right anymore. Even my kids began to tell me I needed some style. But I feared those damn salons - Soooooo - I went online - and Voila! Your tutorial has given me a very cute hair style, which works perfectly with my naturally wavy hair, so that I can continue simply washing and naturally drying. Thank you so very Much - from a mother of five, grandmother of thirteen - I Feel Pretty Again! PS, This pic is an earlier pic from a couple years ago, so it does not show my cut. Will have to get an updated pic.

I wanted to get a short haircut about to my shoulders and the person who cut my hair cut my whole hair to the length of my bangs. It was the worst. I cried and ran out the salon. Ever since then I do my own hair or I just trust one other stylist who is my cousin. It's hard to find the right person to cut curly hair

I want to say thank you thank you so much lol 😊 after many many tutorials😧, this is the 1st one iv found to work for me and actually turns out really pretty and like I actualy had it done at the salon, iv had the worst experiences getting hair cuts, either there to busy talking to pay attention to what they're customer is asking or they take wat u say and make it the way they like it ya no thank you my last trip was 4 years ago and after taking years to grow my hair out almost to my belly button (best way I can describe the length) I really wanted long layers and 2 inch cut off well as she saying no u should cut it into a shoulder length a line, I thanked her for her suddgestion and politely declined about 10 mins in she answers the phone and is talking about plans for her night for about 20 mins than came back to me and she just chopped my hair off even shorter that a shoulder length a line my longest layer started at my chin and says I told you it would look great on you, p.s I was turned away from the mirror and like in 5 mins she turned me around and my hair was gone I didn't even get the chance to stop her, i paid said thanks walked out to my car and broke dwn and cried for 3 hours lol so thank you for ending my night mare lol

Last year I went to get my ends trimmed and I like to have in the front a bit of a gradient down the front and sometimes a bit in the back for layering. My hair dresser was not available, she suggested her colleague who was. Big mistake. I colour my hair and most of my colour is at the bottom. I asked to keep the length and not to cut any more than 1 inch at the very most. FIVE inches were gone when she was done and a good chunk of green with it. Not only that, but my gradient was stairs. It looked like stairs. Since then, I've been trying to grow my hair and sort of self learn to adjust trimming the ends. This video is defo helpful for split end. I've yet to master getting my gradient. I have very thick and voluminous hair and I need to learn to manage it DIY style now. I trust my clumsy hands better than a hair dresser now.

i also cut my own hair because of bad experiences with hairstylists ...they would always cut more hair, and when i wanted something special i always brought a picture with me thinking it'd be easier it they see what i want but i never got it as i wanted and comments were always like yeah the girl on the picture has her hair combed in a different way or it's blow dried with a different brush ...and there were two colour mishaps ...when i was dying my hair platinum blonde once it turned like colour of cappuccino with lilla highlights ?? and once when i was dying it chocolate brown it was really crowded that day and the hairstylist forgot about me obviously so my hair was like darker brown but that'd be ok if there weren't reaaally dark brown almost black spots on my hair ...it was awful! so yeah, i prefer to be my own hairdresser :)

My first time watching one of your videos....Firstly, you're gorgeous! :) Secondly, I would Love to try this but I'm terrified! Lol!! My hair is extremely fine so the hair around my face gets damaged very easily. This is what I need to cut and I wear it angled towards my face....very difficult for me to do alone. I did stop going to salons probably 5 years ago and started watching videos on YT to teach myself. When it's time to cut or trim I always seek out new videos...always fun to learn something new. I want to try this...but I'm so worried I will mess up so bad. My hair is not only fine but straight, Extremely straight. Your naturally curly hair is awesome. Thanks for the video and I subscribed to your channel. I'm going to try this later so Wish me luck! I'll let you know how bad I butcher my hair. Lol!!! :)

Went into a really, really expensive salon thinking that they were professional enough to listen to me. I said no layers and my hair was bra strap length at that time and the girl doing my hair made a face and said that it would look too bulky if she didn't put layers in. So she cut in this HUGE layer into the back and half way up my head and it was so god awful. I couldn't believe what she had done. It was just one layer, just one and everyone was always asking me if I had cut it in and how bad it looked and that it would take ages for it to grow out (which it did). But in the end I had to cut five inches off my hair to get it right and it was heart breaking, I ended up with a bob but it honestly looked better than what I had before.

I had a similar situation happen to me before. I explain to the hair stylist how I wanted my hair to look like for like 10 min. I even had a pic with me of the hair how I wanted it. Now this happen like 7 years ago. So then I told myself ok I got nothing to worry about because I explain everything to her and I know she gots this. ( I went to a new hair salon I never been to before and my last). At the time, the haircut I wanted was short hair and it was a cute flattering look. So by the time she was done cutting my hair. I was shocked. It looked nothing like the picture D: and the hair cut looks like a boy's hair cut. Yes you read it right. I looked like a boy and I was so mad and crying. I couldn't even figure how to even style it because there was noooo way! Even if I put hair accessories on my head, I thought by from far away distance I look like a gay boy D: But now I don't ever step a foot on a hair salons and I do my hair. And btw my hair now is super long. I love it. But I'm just sharing one of my horror stories from hair Solon. I got a few more.

I enjoyed your video! I am thinking about trying this technique. And oh my gosh I am the same way. I don't want to hurt their feelings, so I never tell my hair dresser. One time, she cut it entirely too short. It was just.. Terrible. Took a year to grow back. I dealt with it the best I could. I straightened it and found new ways to style it. I eventually loved it actually!

Yep, my stylist told me my hair was too long to layer and by the time she was done cutting my hair, which was down to my waist, is just past my shoulders by the time she was done. I am so dissapointed. Why don't professionals know to do this?! She said if I layered my hair I would have long strings in the back and would just want them cut off anyway. I am going to do this myself as I try to grow it again. I would like to keep a healthy trim while I grow it out. Thank you for showing me how.

I can't afford a professional hair cut right now, so thank you so much for sharing your tips with us! I'll be trying them out soon. Now, one of the last times I had a hair cur I asked for "A little past the shoulder" and pointed with my finger. I left with a wet mop of hair and something a little too close to the chin. It felt more like a bob. I was in shock. I wasn't sure I realized just how short it was until I got home and could really inspect the damage. I cried for hours. It was everything I didn't want my hair to look like.

Dont get me wrong i used this method twice and both turned out great!!! but as i was watching again to cut my hair once more i noticed it looks like you have more layers so i am wondering if you have some extra procedures to get your end result?
