Have you ever wondered how to cure your glass paint? There are a variety of different types of permanent glass paint on the market.
Folk art enamel paint is the one I have the most experience with.
Each brand of glass paint has different directions on how to cure paint on glass. I recommend reading the manufacturer's directions to know how make acrylic paint on glass permanently. Each type of glass paint has different behaviors and they air dry and back at different temperatures and for different amount of time.

    I have been doing acrylic pours over glass vases, candle holders, etc. I use a mixture of acrylic paint and Floetrol. I need to protect the surface but I’m having a hard time finding a good top coat. Resin is uneven and I often get drips (stalagmites) on the edges. Spray products do not seem to give a smooth finish, and if I knick the painted glass I can peel the paint right off. I recently tried Crystalac and it’s horrible. I’ve ruined 8 vases because of bubbles and streaks. I’m very frustrated. I have some beautiful art pieces and I can’t sell them because I can’t find a good protective coat. I don’t expect these pieces to be run through a dishwasher, but I do want the paint to remain on the glass and be able to dust it off with a damp cloth if needed. One question I have is can I bake acrylic paint? I can’t do pours with the glass enamel paint and I’m wondering how having Floetrol in the paint would react to the heat of the oven. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m at the end of my rope here. 😢

    @@AmyRessa Thank you for taking the time to reply. 🤗 I finally found a resin that I can work with. I also learned some tricks to working with resin. On the rare occasions that I get drips, I use a heated Xacto knife to carefully remove them. I am learning that much of this is about patience and practice, and experimenting with different products. That’s not always easy as Art can turn into an expensive hobby. Lol I have started experimenting with using Mod Podge to add accents and create other looks that don’t involve acrylic pours. Even started doing sone decoupage! Whoop! 😱😂🤣

I used humbrol and pebeo glass and enamel paints ...i dried them for more than 24 hours and then cured them for half an hour. I read at various places that all this makes glasses dishwasher safe. I gifted them to a friend, they washed in dish washer and the paint just peeled off. I am gutted. I have been reading about using varnish as top coat but am too confused as to which varnish/sealant should i use as top coat to make them dishwasher proof and/or make the colour last. Can you please help? Can you recommend which varnish i should use and also will they ever be dishwasher safe? Thanks in advance

  • @AmyRessa

    @AmyRessa

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for you nice comment. Did they place the glassware on the bottom rack or top? Is their dishwasher commercial grade? Some of the new dishwashers are very hot, which can cause the paint to come off. Also, make sure they are not allowing the glassware to sit in water. That can loosen the paint too. You really don't have to coat the painted glass, however, I place a coat of Mod Podge dishwasher safe formula, for added protection. I would recommend handwriting if possible, treat like fine china!

    Hey what a great video! I have a couple questions about the nature of this kind of glass paint: Do you think this paint can be blended? Acrylic paint dries almost immediately and cant be blended when applied onto glass (unless mixed with retarder). Do you think the paint can layer in the way that sign painting on glass is layered (in that reverse way that paintings on restaurant windows are applied, often during christmas) and still cure properly? Do you think that it is possible to cure the paint using a professional heat gun? The temperature would be high enough, it would just a little uneven (For a painting on glass that would be too large for an oven). Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • @AmyRessa

    @@AmyRessa Thanks for the reply! Do you think a heat gun might work to cure the paints? Is the the curing what blurs out the brush marks and creates that "old glass" look that I've seen with some glass paints? What do you mean by flow medium?

  • @AmyRessa

    @AmyRessa

    @@ezragray I am not sure about using a heat gun. The oven would be an over the entire design during at one time. Heat gun is fine if used to help with drying while you are painting it. Baking the glasses doesn't change the look of your design. I would have to see the design in order to try to determine the kind of paint being used.

    @@AmyRessa Thank you so much for the advice! It's very difficult to understand the nature of these paints without a lot of trial and error. At the paint store I saw a sheet of samples and the yellow was very translucent and had this "dimpled" old stained glass quality to it. I imagined that this was the result of being baked but maybe it was something else. There was also no appearance of brush marks and thought that those melted away because of the baking process. It was Pebeo glass paint. I'll just have to buy them and do some tests. I'm creating a fairly large light box painting, but the design is dependent on the quality of the paint (acrylic often looks like sign painting for a business while glass paint has a craft-type quality, more domestic).

    What liquid should we use to treat the glass before painting?

  • @AmyRessa

    @AmyRessa

    Ай бұрын

    Thank you for your question. There is no need to treat the glass prior to painting if you are using the FolkArt Enamels or Multi-Surface paints. Just make sure you clean the glass and wipe off with denatured rubbing alcohol prior to painting. After you bake or air dry, you can place a coating of something like Mod Podge the dishwasher safe formula, but it isn't required. I hope this help!
