    I love the way you discussed the topic, after watching videos from my country men in the Philippines, I was a little bit confused because they have different style of culling and most of the videos I watch waits for them to grow to one inch before culling. After watching this i realized that we can cull them at 18 days old, it minimizes the workload later on culling one inch fish 😄

    This video is very cool! Not everybody likes the idea of culling, but it is necessary, plain and simple. A buyer wants quality, a breeder should strive for quality, a seller should show quality. HOW one does it is the question. You start by knowing all the lifestages of the breed and what the norms are. With tiny fry, everything when viewed from the top should be symetrical and correct, here breed type does not matter as long as the whole body is functioning properly. The older the fry get the more attention needs to be payed to potential and how true the conformation fits to type. For example- Fancies with no dorsal fins must not have a dip in the back, Telescopes must not have one normal eye, etc. I find long peduncles unattractive. Goldfish breeds known for having a wen should look better if they have a wider head for wen growth as opposed to a pointed head. For me It feels natural to keep them healthy for food for other fish, nature's way. That way I know they won't grow up, and breed to ruin a breed or a project with their faults.

  • @GoldfishCorner

    @GoldfishCorner

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sponge filter is the right choice; I used it, too. Keep the water shallow when your goldfish fry is under 0.5 in or 1 cm long. Shallow water makes them easy to swim around and find food. If water is too deep, the fries will take too much effort to swim and find food. Thanks

    I see what you mean. Since culling is a sort of sensitive topic, I normally give my answer depending on people’s position on culling. To be honest, I never sell culls unless it is extremely rare breed. Simply throw them away, don’t expect to get any money out of it. Good for me, and good for the community. Not all the goldfish farms do the same though. However, all the pro breeders and superior goldfish farms like Zhao’s Fancies or Pan’s goldfish farm do the same as I do, throw them away.

    Yeah I do believe it is good to keep the fish more likely to survive in the bloodline, but I think that might be one of the reasons I could never breed goldfish lol. I would probably end up keeping all of the culls. What kind of fish do you breed? I’m looking for a breed of goldfish as another addition to my tank, but I have absolutely no idea what I should get. I already have two fairly friendly fan tails, and I don’t think I’m interested in any of the globe eyes, but could you give me a recommendation?

  • @GoldfishCorner

    One breeder who kept all his fry no matter keepers or culls is Pro Shi S. Chen. Famous professor and pioneer in goldfish genetics. You can still google his paper on goldfish genetics published in 1930’s. I only have Blue Egg Phoenix for now, trying to get some Red Goosehead from China. Sounds like your like Wen-fish with dorsal fin. I would recommend you to keep some Thai Oranda with Rose tail. Beautiful fish, relatively strong/rough , and high keeper rate, too

  • @GoldfishCorner

    @GoldfishCorner

    That is OK if you don’t want to cull. One Spawn will hatch over 500 fry. They normally do several spawns with 2-week break in between each spawn. You will end up with over 1 thousand fry to raise. You may do your calculations about how much space or food resources you need. On top of that, goldfish gene 🧬 are not stable, you will end up find many deficient goldfish with crooked body etc. I counted for my total hatched BEP fries, they were over 700 fries.

    Daniel, now I got better understanding of your case. A few thoughts, first you made my dream come true to keep a school of goldfish in a swimming pool 🤩. Second, There are so much fun in breeding your own goldfish. Not only you get more fish, but also you can “make” or “choose” the goldfish that you dream. Since goldfish gene 🧬 is not stable, not like tropical fish, you may get some surprises in the next generation and then pick the one you like. This is the general idea of culling. Third, goldfish culling may be a little controversial for new breeders. Just keep an open mind. I support culling but understand that people reluctant to do so. Forth, yes you definitely can give culls to your friends as long as they don’t plan to breed them further. As you see, culled goldfish normally has deficiencies in their gene, you may not want them to pass these gene to the next generation. Good luck and welcome my club 👏

    It means reducing some; mainly used for feeding monster fishes because the space is less or the fish are born with a deformity and people want the healthy fish to live in proper environment(with enough amount of fishes, overcrowding causes the fishes' body not to grow, but the internal organs will be growing, fish will look weird and die. and ammonia level will rise and its gills will start to burn.)

    Novak, appreciated your direct feedback. I like it! Again, it’s totally up to you based on your own taste. In fact, the whole culling thing reflects your local culture and how you interpret the beauty. No right or wrong. For instance, Japanese breeders used to selectively keep the fused-tail. That is how they created beautiful breed of Tosakin goldfish. One thing for sure though is you got to cull since you are not able to keep/raise all the fries. For instance, for a successful spawn, your goldfish should lay down hundreds or even thousands of eggs then become fries. Are you able to keep and raise all them? No. Which to keep/cull. Then you need culling. How to cull is however depending on you or your local culture in term of your definition of beauty.

  • @supernovakk

    Goldfish Corner oh I completely agree. My goldfish had surprise babies (literally hundreds), and I pretty much exhausted myself raising them all. I did, and when they were old enough I gave most away to shops to sell. However, I wasn’t doing it as a career and I totally understand why you would need to cull and raise only the best of the bunch! No criticism was intended in my comment! I was just saying if I got the opportunity in any walk of life I would gladly take someone’s culls to raise. But, I understand why you have to do it! As long as you treat them with respect, and cull them in a gentle, humane way, which I am most certain you do, I totally get it. If you’re ever in England and you have some culls, I would gladly take them lol! Wishing you the best.
