How to create collage art and remove wrinkles

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've wanted to create this video for a while now because I know I struggled a lot with this when I first started out. Creating collage art without wrinkles is tough, but there is a secret. As an added bonus, I tear up a 65 year old magazine to create the base of my painting which is always fun, but a challenge to not overthink. Enjoy!

To confirm, yes, you use glue. But the key is making sure that the paper is also wet. It seems to be the wetness of the glue against dry paper that tends to cause buckling and warping.

Can 't you collage on wood board? How would you keep that wet?

Yes, you can! In that case I would make sure that the paper pieces that you're collating with are very wet. It's the dry paper and the wet glue that seems to cause buckling too.

What kind of glue do you use?

Diluted Elmers glue. If you’re going to layer and paint over it, hit it with a layer of clear gesso first. It will take the paint better. If painting while collaging, consider just using clear gesso.

@@ChrisAumanArtThis is a HUGE help!! Matte medium is so much more expensive than Elmer’s glue!! Thank you!!!! Do you mind if I ask what the dilution factor/ratio is? ❤

Thanks. Yes, Elmer's is WAAAAAY cheaper for sure and it works just as well. Like I said, if you're going to paint over it in some way, I would recommend a thin layer of clear gesso first because the dried glue doesn't take the paint really well. The dilution I've used isn't precise so I can't be too specific. I would start with 1/3 water, 2/3 glue and see how that goes for you. But I'm betting that you could even go to half and half since you want to get the paper really wet anyway. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. @BB-nz5sk @@BB-nz5sk

@@ChrisAumanArt thank you SO much for taking the time to respond. I am trying to learn how to be an artist from KZread University. LOL. Sometimes things that may seem obvious to trained/experienced artists are quite challenging for us newbies!

It wasn't clear at all. Do you put the glue on, then wet it or wet it, then put the glue on?

Sorry for the confusion. To clarify, here are the steps: Put glue on your surface. (Canvas, paper, wood, etc.). Then I spray both sides of the piece of collage with water. (It doesn't have to be completely soaked!) Then I stick it to the surface and smooth it out. Then I take my brush that has some glue left on it and brush it over the top as well. This will help to really make sure that all parts of the paper (front and back) are covered in glue. (This helps if you are overlapping pieces of collage) Note, that adding too much water and glue can have the opposite affect and create wrinkles. So it's best to experiment and find what works for you.

Thank for this tip! Is there a way to remove the wrinkles once it’s dry? Dip it all in water? 😂

There will always be some wrinkles. I think this can be part of the charm in my opinion because I like texture in my art. You really must try and get it as flat as possible when the glue and the paper is still wet. You just gotta continue to work out the wrinkles and bubbles when it's wet. Depending on the paper you use, there could still be warping of the paper too when it's all dry. This is more problematic in my opinion. The best way I've found to fix the warping is, when the piece is dry, spray it down with water really well on both sides. Then put it between two pieces of plastic (cheap painters tarps will do). Then put something flat on top of it like a board or even cardboard or a large drawing pad. Then put anything heavy on it. I used gallon paint cans. This does a great job of flattening the piece as much as possible.

Thank you. Recently started painting and doing collage over old Bible pages. I do like some wrinkles too. The pages are so thin! I’m just trying to learn all the tricks to it. Thank you. ❤
