I love collage papers! And when you layer them on a painting, things get really interesting. In this video, I make my own collage papers and also apply them to a painting in process so you get to see how I layer them. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes! I love to hear about other people's experiences.

0:12 Supplie + materials
0:55 Making collage papers yourself
2:30 How I make and organize my homemade tissue collage papers
5:29 Using collage on a painting
6:35 Why use collage instead of paint?
11:15 Demonstrations of how collage looks in mid-stages of a painting
Materials I use in this video: (some are **affiliate links)
•Tissue Paper 100 count amzn.to/44JG9uB
I will also use tracing paper, deli paper or craft paper. Each has a different texture and reacts differently, so it takes experimentation.
• The brushes I use are 2 flat brushes of different size and 1 rigger brush for ascemic writing
• acrylic paint and fluid acrylic paint mixed with water
• Golden Liquid Glazing Medium amzn.to/3pmcLdK
Ascemic writing is a kind of writing with little to no emphasis on semantics. It is something that looks like, or is, writing but mainly is meant for aesthetic purposes.

    I love watching you create using collage papers! I have one suggestion - the music playing while you're talking is very distracting and for those of us who have hearing problems, it make hearing what you're saying very difficult. I noticed that closed caption was not available. Lowering the volume or selecting a more soothing background music would help with this problem.

    Hi Janet, thanks for watching 😊. A couple of my video would not allow me to turn on closed captioning, and I think this was one unfortunately. I’m sorry to hear you couldn’t hear and that closed captioning wasn’t available to help. Your suggestion is noted and thanks. 👍

    I am 73 & just about to start my Artist/creative years I have planned for myself! Prior too, my creative expression has been in designing and developing gardens and homes. I’m so excited!! I love your style. I am very drawn to encaustic and wonder if your craft is a good companion for encaustic 🤔 I will find out. ☺️

  • @MicheleEngel

    @MicheleEngel

    Жыл бұрын

    Jenn, tissue paper is an outstanding companion for encaustic. I’ve used tissue paper in my artwork for about twenty years now-for mixed media paintings, art journals, and encaustic. The transparency of the unpainted portion of the tissue paper is 100% when used in encaustic; I love the way it disappears. It’s slightly visible on other surfaces (if you look closely). And another thing I’ve done with it is apply rubber stamp images to it with archival permanent ink pads (Ranger archival or Stazon brands). I have quite a collection of them, many with abstract patterns/designs that I love to use. Also alphabet stamps. I have a feeling you’re going to love this. I didn’t start pursuing my interest is making art until I was 50 (self-taught), and I’m 69 now and semi-retired. I finally have a decent amount of time to spend on it, and I just love it MORE every day. 😊

    I was gifted a pack of rice paper so I’m currently working with them using your method of creating collage papers then incorporating into my art… you are a true inspiration! Having a blast through the process, not rushing to get to the end result but actually feeling/seeing where the process takes me . Being in the PRESENT is something I am consciously working on. I am a self taught artist for about 20 years now and it’s interesting to look back on how I’ve evolved. Hi Marabeth, I've only just found your channel and I'm hooked!!! I find your work very informative and freeing the way you work. I haven't yet found my own way in the art world as yet, I started With fluid paint pouring and have been enjoying it but lately I find That their are so many artists doing the same thing and that's fine But I would like to try some art with your methods (my own take on it) If you know what I meen. Where should I begin I enjoyed your video on Painting on an exercise pad into squares but yet to try it. Would this be a good starting point? Sorry for the big ramble!! 👏💙🌈

  • @marabethquinart

    @marabethquinart

    Hi Janet! I’m so happy you find the channel helpful-that’s just what I was hoping for! Firstly, it’s very normal to start with one type of art and then keep morphing into something new; that’s actually the lifeblood of a dynamic art career, so you’re right on track! 😉 And there is nothing wrong at all with trying to do what another artist does when you’re learning and experimenting. For eons, art students (and we’re all students to some degree) have learned by trying to duplicate what other artists did, and then as they progress, they find their own voice, so again, you’re right on track. I would suggest starting with the exercise you mentioned and really try to just enjoy the process and experimenting with brush strokes and materials without much concern to how it looks. As you get more comfortable and enjoy yourself, you will begin to find that you like your work more. It’s never supposed to look great at first! (That’s the part no one tells you). Good luck and remember to have fun-that’s where we learn the best. Let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear.

    I actually know what you’re saying-a painting being ‘done’ is really a subjective idea, isn’t it? I want to get better at leaving my work in the rough stages and allowing my definition of ‘done’ to include that raw, almost unfinished look. It’s hard to do! But always worth striving for

    Hi Marabeth, my medium I seriously love is watercolor and have loved it for many years. So….. many paintings later, now over 30 years, I have run up against a wall of boredom and seem to not be feeling exhilarated over my work these days. Yes, I sell my art, my clients are thrilled with them BUT I’m not! I remembered many moons ago loving the collage process, the feeling of the paper on piece, the endless hours that somehow, did not seem long. You have inspired me to begin again with that and see how it blooms. What would you suggest as to the process of doing this successfully on strictly watercolor surface without acrylics?

  • @marabethquinart

    I love watercolor too! I’d love to see your work. And I think boredom setting in is so common when our creative nature is ready for some new iteration of what we’ve been doing, so I think you’re right on track! And just adding collage to your watercolors using the golden glazing medium will work just fine with it. Let me know how it goes, Denise! I’d love to hear.

    You inspired me to try layering transparent papers and now I can't stop playing with them. I've experimented with watercolour on wet strength tissue to make my papers, after deciding that I wasn't happy using plastic acrylics. Plus I want the transparency but I see that the really watered down acrylics you've used were actually quite transparent. I do love watercolours though more than acrylics. I'd be interested to know why you choose to use glazing medium rather than matt or gloss medium. But another thing I've learnt from someone's video is that if I stick the papers down with wallpaper paste I can use watercolours over it very easily once the papers have dried. As you might be able to tell, I'm absolutely fascinated by this process and materials. Thank you.

    It is a fun process, indeed! So happy you’re enjoying working with transparent papers-I love it too. I use the glazing medium for several reasons: it doesn’t get gummy on my hands like matte medium does, and I also like to use it to make glazes with my paints and I use those sometimes over the paper, so it’s just handy to have the same product do both. And I have also found that I can put watercolors over the papers I have adhered with Golden Glazing Medium after it’s dried. They work just fine and then I spray varnish it to lock it in place before I brush varnish it.

    I usually add multiple layers of tissue to a painting-it adds depth, the different colors interact and it lends that dreamy feel to the overall aesthetic. I also use different brands of tissue because they have different qualities, as well as rice paper, teabag paper and mulberry paper. All are semi-transparent and lend specific qualities to the painting. If you’re having trouble with your tissue paper holding together, sometimes brushing it less when tinting it will help.

    I do both-sometimes I will lay down an acrylic base and then paper over, doing mark making on all layers-the base, mid-way, and then on top of everything. But other times, I paint my botanicals on the papers and don’t put paint down first-in my latest class, The Layered Botanical, I exclusively work with this process. It’s fun! And sometimes I will put paint glazes over parts of the paintings just to harmonize it or tone things down.
