I’ve been using a Teflon baking sheet to coat papers in gloss medium. They peel right off, and you can put it in the oven on a low temp to quickly dry them. Same as the Ranger no stick craft mat, but much cheaper.

Very helpful to see how transparent the toddy and wall art papers were! Thank you for your demonstration.
This is super helpful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Also enjoying the other comments and tips.
This was very informative and helpful. Thanks for the demo and practical hints. It’s great to hear from an experienced artist.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. This type of content is SO valuable!❤
The artist Jacki Bernardi recently did an experiment with papers just like this but also had physician's paper in the experiment. She found it becomes transparent when you wet it with water before laying it down on gloss medium and then covering it with gloss medium. You can later go over it with mat medium to stop the shine.

Yes my friend Mary Beth Shaw (aka StencilGirl) told me about that paper. The only one I've found in the UK has a texture... 🤔
Really like the idea of making transparent art papers for my journal! Going to be trying this out, for sure. 💗
So helpful, Sally. Thank you! I have been using mostly WST, but may try Toddy.
Thanks as always Sally -- everything you share is immensely valuable -- never heard of Toddy paper but looks like it will be my new favorite too ❤

I had it shipped over from the states. Highly recommend. My pal Dar tried a cheaper alternative, it didn't work so only get the Toddy brand.
Really useful info & demo, thank you very much

Thanks for the tutorial

I can't find wall art rice paper in the USA. I can recommend another paper that goes transparent quite well with gloss medium; medical exam paper. It's the stuff they cover the table with before you lie on it. It is inexpensive too!

Thanks Sara, yes my friend MaryBeth has been using it. So far the UK ones I've found are textured? But I'll keep looking...
Sally-excellent information thank you. If I understand correctly, you saturate the toddy paper with gloss medium before printing on the toddy paper?
😊 👏👏👏
Thanks Sally. I just checked out ArtWay. Did you use the Sheng (raw) or Shu (ripe) paper? The Shang is unsized and the Shu is slightly sized.

I used their pad of rice paper, haven't trued it yet but the raw will work better as its more absorbant

Just trying it.. its different, thicker, more like the Jacksons one on the video?
Thanks Sally really interesting to learn new techniques. Do you spritz with water the bottom of the paper on both sides or just one side, before placing it onto the gel plate?
@sallyhirstartisttutor6324

Thin papers only need one side

Why do you spritz the papers with water first?
Thanks for sharing, one question: Do you aply the gloss medium before or after you paint on the paper?
@sallyhirstartisttutor6324

After.... this is just to show transparency. If you do this before your paint or ink won't soak in!
Sally, does it matter if paper/tissue is non archival/acidic if it is sealed with mat medium? Great video.

Most papers are not made with tree/wood fibers so acid free?
Thank you very much for this video, Sally, it's really useful. There seem to be several Golden gloss mediums so please could you say which one you use, or would any of them work?

'Medium' is a generic tetm for an additive. Theres only one Golden gloss medium, the rest are gels so thicker?

hi. great video/ what kind of gloss medium would you recommend--is it golden gloss medium or gloss glazing....? could you potentially use matte medium and get the same effect?
@sallyhirstartisttutor6324
8 ай бұрын
Gloss medium. Glazing will take forever to dry and Matte medium is not transparent so will be foggy..
It's was a very good lesson about transparency. Learned a lot. Can you say what brand of gloss medium you use? The exact name because here where I live it's hardcto find products so I must order them online and it helps to have the exact name of the products. Thanks for those tips and the links in your site 😊

Hi,Thanks! I use Golden ..
I can't believe your delicate papers didn't tear with the pulling from the plate. I frequently use thin Japanese papers for gel printing using acrylic paints and so many of them tear even with a pretty immediate lift. If the paint dries even a little bit, it's worse, and especially if I don't clean my plate between rapid pulls. I have tried spritzing the back of the paper with a fine water mist before a pull, and that makes it even worse for tearing. I have been trying to find the best glue for using these prints for collage onto canvas and panel and has been wondering if they would get blotch-stained using acrylic mediums and ruin the art. Thanks for making this video.

While they are wet, with water or paint they are very delicate and will tear. But if you coat them with medium and letbit dry thoroughly the medium gives them the strength? The glue you use for collage onto canvas or panel depends on how thick your paper is, thin papers are fine with gloss or matte medium, thicker papers need soft gel, very thick papers heavy gel. All of it I cover in my online course sallyhirst.co.uk/collage-creations/

What is the best medium to glue collage pieces to substrate without wrinkles are any of these better than others?
@sallyhirstartisttutor6324
8 ай бұрын
The wrinkles will depend a lot on your paper too but I like Golden or Liquitex Matte medium. I often mix it with Methyl Cellulose, makes it slower drying so you can reposition and smooth out wrinkles. All on section 1..
