I can't thank you enough for this video!! I am 82 years old, play golf 3-4 times a week, I have watched more KZread videos on golf than I care to admit and even though I have equaled or bettered my age 13 times so far in 2024, no one has ever broken down the golf swing better than this....a true "light bulb" moment!! I feel like I feel like I have been in a dark closet and somebody (you) just opened the door!! So much thanks! --Doug Schakel, Olathe, Kansas USA

I don't speak for Fred but the description within this video explains it perfectly, the fact that your left arm controls the back swing and continues to during the initial phase of the downswing. Then when the right arm takes over and fires. Who are you to say what Fred or myself have or have not seen !!

Like Fred and Kevin I found this instruction really good as it has really improved my swing speed and accuracy thus giving some extra distance (after a bit of practice) .Watching the hundreds of golf swing videos can sometimes confuse the viewer as it is broken down in many pieces.I never really took any notice of what is the dominant hand on takeaway and never would have been instructed on this after talking lessons from my club pro. Instruction delivered really well making me understand swing a bit better. This instruction suites my game and by the comments others as well. Fred and Kevin looks like we seem to get it -jcice maybe your skills at golf are way beyond out abilities and don't need to be searching through hundreds of videos to find a good swing.

I have to agree with the major sentiment here. You clearly demonstrate and explain the basics of the golf swing. I have had to figure this out on my own as I have never come across a golf instructor who could explain the full swing. I would get, "use your left arm," "don't flip your hands, " etc. But no one would or could explain the kinesthetics of the golf swing. Keep up the good vids. I also liked your vid on speed of the golf swing.

Enjoy watching your videos. My only comment on this video is when my right arm is passive on the backswing, the backswing really flattens out. This leads to pushes and pull hooks. For me, i like to have the right arm passive until the club nears waist high, then do a "curl" motion (like lifting dumdbells) to finish the backswing. A little complicated, but it also helps to keep my left arm straight. Cheers from Michigan, USA!!!

You need to make a lateral right to left (if you are a right handed player) movement to initiate the downswing ground reaction force sequence and yes this may feel like a push out of the right foot. The timing of this move is really important and it should happen just before the top of the backswing 👍🏻

I'm glad to hear I should just take it back with the left arm, was wondering if that was correct. And because it happens fairly slowly you can "feel" that movement. But as far as the rest I don't see how you can tell anything that is happening. The downswing is too fast and your mind can not react to nothing other than hitting the ball. But hopefully leading back with the left arm sets you in the correct position at the top, and then you just swing down. But the video is helpful....

  • @SMASHFACTORGOLFCOACHING

eddie brown you just want to get your attention on one thing so taking the left arm back is a great place to start. Once this is automatic you can place your attention on to another area and solely focus on that - I agree that the swing happens too quickly to be attempting too many things at once

The golf swing is analogous to a springboard diver doing a somersault with a twist. For a right-handed golfer, the left arm guides/swings the club along the swing plane. The right arm simply cocks and then straightens back out at the elbow and the wrist, just like casting a fishing line out into the middle of a lake. The right wrist only moves up and down, never left or right. When you combine the two motions, you hit it solid and long. Lots of leverage.

Natalie, it just occurred to me that as you addressed the left-handed golfers at the beginning of the video at 0:44 that a lot of instructional videos are for right-handed golfers. Many lefties are told to reverse the instructions as they watch a video made for righties. If you were to reverse your video on the horizontal, you would appear to be a left-handed golfer. Letters in the background as in this video would be backwards but you, yourself would appear to be left-handed. You then could synchronize both videos side by side with a visual divider between them. Your narration would work for both. Lefties could watch the left side of the screen and righties could watch the right.

  • @SMASHFACTORGOLFCOACHING

Keith Dennis hi good question and I will do a video to help clarify for you. Basically you need to rotate your pelvis towards the target, then rotate your rib cage towards the target and then engage your left arm down in the direction to strike. So you do need to pull the club down to increase club head speed, after you’ve moved pelvis then rib cage

I think people get confused or make-up do's and don'ts, but the lady is Right... try pulling your left arm in the backswing or trying pulling your right arm in backswing. 1 should have a push motion the other will have a pulling motion. Teachers had recently disagreed with the term pull for some reason, but in physics pushing is far less accurate the pulling

Also paying too much attention to the arms/hands, I will forget the core body movement. Isn't it true that if the core movement is correct, the arms/hands should just follow properly? Sorry if this sounds too much like a beginner's question :-)

kiliou That actually is an excellent question and it deserves an excellent answer . There are a gazillion ways to skin a cat in golf. She is describing a hitting method (power comes from applying force with the right arm at the perfect moment) , you are describing a pure swinging method where the core rotation drags the arms, hands and club along. The arms and hands are passive . The key to the swinging method is to stay "connected" (upper arms squeezed against the chest). Watch videos on "staying connected in the golf swing". The swinging method IMO is superior because it does not require timing the right arm, which may be easy to do at the range but when the choke string gets tight when a 5 dollar Nassau is on the line, it becomes very difficult. So pick your poison. Less flexible players will do better hitting. Flexible players should experiment with both methods and find which is best for them.

I'm trapped between both methods---although I think elements of both can be incorporated into a swing theoretically......just looked at your Des Lynam video on the golf swing.....amazingly simple........loose wrists, no tension in arms/forearms and use of larger muscles.......things I have heard many many times before. However, I think a different NEW pearl of wisdom (for me) is that the ".....the larger muscles work better when they move SLOWLY....." Obviously, that is a relative term....very slow for a pro might be superfast for me.....maybe smoothly is really what he means, unhurried perhaps. Anyway, I do like the video about the arms.

"at the perfect moment" isn't consistently possible for amateur golfers. For advanced, yes. That's the biggest issue for amateurs; timing. That's why IMO that teaching rolling the wrists thru impact is too difficult for beginners or even intermediates. The fewer moving parts the better. Even the uncocking of the wrists at the perfect time is asking a lot. Obviously, power will be less without the wrist cock but solid contact will be better & proper consistent contact is the key to ball striking.

klliou i struggle w this as well meaning I go back and forth between a body swing where I try to forget about hands and arms altogether and have hit some really nice shots that way but my left arm bends and I’m losing power and can get wild shots. So I switch to a swing where I keep my lead arm straight but I feel like it’s a struggle to do that and makes my whole body tighten up, my right hand sometimes takes over, and I also get pain in my lead arm inside the elbow. So my question is how to keep arm straight but keep my body loose lol. Btw I’m an athlete too so it’s not like I’m a spazz but it’s driving me nuts

2 ways to have a less open face and one is to roll wrists through impact but this can lead to inconsistency with directional control. Better to set the club face less open on the down swing and then rotate the body through impact kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGuJ2MiEmpSXqto.html

When I hear the phrase "pull the club down" is it actually a physical pull? Others say "let the club drop" by allowing gravity to do the work. Which is it?

Mike Rodrick if you rotate your body (still in posture) this will move the club downwards - so gravity doing the work. Rotate your body as mentioned and pull your left arm towards target line and target and you will accelerate the club more so hit further. Both are wanting you not to move your hands too much horizontally towards the target line when starting your down swing - that's what it's all about

I’ve been training my left arm to dominate swing and just leave the right arm passive/supporting the swing slightly. Because everything happens in a fraction of a second how can you properly time firing the right arm? I would rather leave that up to autonomic system.

I need to learn the same thing....played with my buddy the other day who was an instructor. He said his swing was all left arm and the right, just along for the ride. I hit the ball with my right, as opposed to swing the club with my left. It's a swing, not a hit. I am great at giving advise........need to learn to take it.....

Do you really pull down with left arm? I though that would steepen the club? I thought arms were supposed to be passive?

You need to rotate your body and your left arm will move downwards. The steepness would come from the rotation in your arms and not the downward action

vimal Mittal it’s more about keeping the right arm passive so that you can then extend the right arm through the strike to gain more club head speed and therefore more shot distance

I enjoy bout male and female golf coaching, but watching a woman with big boobs demonstrate correct technique is very helpful because you can see the "One over; One under rule in effect. Stop the video at 2:20/ 3:53 to see what I mean. As you will see, her left triceps is over her left boob; while her right triceps and elbow are under her right boob. Of course, men don't have boobs, but good golfers get to similar positions in the downswing. I swing similarly, but I drive my right elbow toward the ground and toward my right hip, as I pull with my left hand. For irons, I'm conscious of driving the left hand toward a point a few inches in front of the golf ball. With the driver, I'm conscious of pulling the club handle toward the target. One more thing I do: I'm conscious of my right wrist and right elbow during my back swing. I make sure that my right wrist is bent back on itself as if I'm holding a tray when I'm at the top. I also adjust my right arm by moving it forward and down in its socket so that my right elbow is pointing as straight down at the ground as I can get it. I hit a lot of dead, straight shots using this adaptation of Smash's golf swing.

I think your opinion about the right arm becoming dominant in the late downswing is flawed. The golf shaft is in forward shaft bend approaching impact for long clubs, which (by physics) means that the hands are applying a net negative torque via the hands. The angular velocity of the club is so fast that the hands cannot physically keep up, so the hands are actually being dragged into impact by the club (ie. negative torque). Check out the excellent free website articles that Dave Tutelman has written about the golf swing and many other aspects of club technology, biomechanics, physics , etc . However, the instruction about the lead arm being the dominant swinger in the golf action seems very plausible.

Hi Jack completely correct on the physics side of the club movement it’s the “feel” you want to have too many golfers use their right arm from the top of the downswing which isn’t optimal (it needs to be the rotation of the body starting the downswing) for club speed through impact or creating an optimal swing direction

  • @jackflash8756

    @jackflash8756

I'm afraid (from a science perspective again) you have to be careful with feel because it takes time for an action to actually get 'felt'. For example, the downswing only takes about 0.25 secs and what you 'feel' late in the downswing could be something you did earlier. So, the feel of active trail wrist torque in the late downswing at/near impact might be some active trail wrist torque that you applied earlier at around P5.5- P6. Some scientists say that that golfer may actually apply a little temporary active wrist torque during release to overcome the friction in the wrist joints (which might interfere with the physics of release). By the time you 'feel' that active wrist torque, the club has moved closer to impact, so you naturally think you are applying wrist torque later. Ironically, one might be correct about 'feeling' as if you are applying active wrist torque near impact.

Sorry but I don’t like the left arm straight thought. Straight means rigid for most people. Causes a wooden swing. Separating arms in the swing is not something that the average player (me included).can think of. Sorry don’t like this one.
