How to Connect a Zoom H1 To a Mixer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Links to the equipment used are below.
This is a short video showing you how to Connect a Zoom H1 to a Mixer / Soundboard to achieve clean, undistorted audio in Stereo.
This works well when:
1. Recording a DJ’s Music set at a wedding / party
2. Recording a Band,
3. Recording Live audio at an event.
The Zoom H1 is a really good recorder that records in various recording formats. I've had mine for years and it has never given me
any issues. I think that goes for Rode products in general.

    I got a H1N, I'am not able to set enough gain on the device without getting distorted signals. When I set the gain down, I get some crack sound in some of the tracks, especially in kick sounds, maybe the missing gain interrupts in some ways idk. Will this setup with the attenuation cable fix this? Because I could set more gain on the zoom H1N? thanks!

    Hey RedHotMartinpepper, You're getting distortion or clipping because your audio is going beyond the 'zero level' which is the clipping zone. The Attenuation cable will give you more headroom so you don't wont get the distortion/ clipping. It usually happens with drums and when your your tracks are too loud. So yes the cable will definitely fix that. Let me know your results

    Thanks for this (hopefully) very useful video! So, I got the attenuation cable and the adapter. But I only get signal in one channel. Would the fault most likely be in the attenuation cable or in the adapter? Or is there some kind of a setting that I am not aware of? I tried the H1n using auto level and limiter, but got clippings when recording a live dj set, so I would very much like your trick to work!

  • @RavKan

    Christian Herseth Sørensen Hi Christian, It may the Cable or Adapter you’ve got. Maybe return them both and get a new set. There won’t be any setting in the H1. The auto level or limiter in the H1 won’t work as well in this case.

(im new with audio stuff).. u think using H1 (or H1n) with the on-built microphones and placing it near the Speakers (with autolimiter on) would give a nice result to have as Back Up in case the Line-in from the DJ mixer fails?.. what are your thoughts about that?. thanks buddy. best

  • @RavKan

    @RavKan

    Nicolas Merono I’ve tried the Line in method many times years ago on weddings but it was resulted in clipped audio. I’ve never had much luck with the Auto Limter either. I like to be in control of my audio and not rely on Auto features. Yeh place a few H1’s around the room will work but i wouldn’t place them too close to the speakers. I usually get to a venue early and speak to the DJ or Band and see what audio setup they have.

    I just ordered the H1N to replace my Tascam DR-07 however feel already now some regret. This is not the same as line level input (like at my Tascam DR-07) when you need to weaken the signal to meet the input level of a microphone. I think there are two resistors inside this annuation cable, nothing special. The problem is when you need an extra sensitive amplification step, it will introduce NOISE. Higher noise floor. Weaken the signal and after this amplify it. Maybe it also a little biased, to correct some characteristcs of a microphone, no 1~1. The input is not a microphone. It would be better to bypass the microphone amplification circuitry however this device is unable to so. Useless in my opinion, this 'feature' is not a feature, recorder is not designed to do this. This is a huge downside not to buy this recorder when you want to record from line outputs.

  • @RavKan

    @RavKan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey there, The Tascam DR-07 has a Stereo mic/line input similar to the H1. They both take a line-level source through the mini-jack stereo input. So both recorders have very similar connections. I've never had any issue with noise floors getting raised when using my digital recorders. What are you hoping to record?
