Great video pro Acoustics, thank you for posting. I am just looking for clarification. In your video, you plug into a linkout on the power amp and plug into the input on the active sub. As that "link out" is really a parallel input on the power amplifier, wouldn't you connect an XLR to the output of the power sub into the parallel input (link out) on the power amplifier? Im not 100% sure so just looking for clarification. Thank you

I ran into a sound system installation with a functionally similar setup like this but I don't think this is the right way to go. The solution here does restrict the sub to below the crossover point. However, the mains will try to reproduce all of the program material, including the lows the subwoofer is doing since the input signal to the amplifier is direct form the mixer and not going through a crossover (unless the amplifier has a built-in crossover). In most cases, the "tops" are not designed for reproducing the low frequencies, which the subwoofer can handle much more efficiently. I feel the more standard solution is for the main outputs (line level) of the mixer be connected to the inputs of the subwoofer (all the active subwoofers I have ran into have a stereo pair of inputs). Set the desired crossover frequency on the subwoofer's crossover and level of subwoofer volume. Then take a separate pair of XLR cables and connect the subwoofer's high bypass outs and connect these cables to the input of the power amp and connect the speaker cables from the amp to the non-powered main speakers. Now you have the line level output of the mixer split with the lows going to the subwoofer and the rest to the power amp hence the non-powered main speakers. One consideration is the sequence of powering on and off the system. I believe the proper power on sequence is mixer->subwoofer->power amp. The power off sequence would be the opposite. This is the solution I came up with when I ran into a setup which was functionally the same as the solution presented here. The system became much clearer after I changed it to what is described above. If I am totally missing the point here, please let me know!

Hi there! If you are using a two channel amplifier as demonstrated in the video, you would simply parallel wire 2 of your passive speakers on each channel of the amplifier (assuming the impedance is acceptable for the amplifier) and then wire from the amplifier's input link to your active sub. Another question: I should be able to run the whole signal to my sub, engage its high pass filter and then amplify the high pass signal to the mains, right?

Hi there, The simplest route would be a powered subwoofer. You would take the record out or 1/4" stereo output of your mixer and plug that into the input of a powered sub, and away you go.

My Behringer KM750 has pretty much an identical Inputs section, with an XLR, 1/4 inch on each channel, and an RCA, but it doesn't not specify "Link/Out". I'm assuming it's the same though, right?

Hello if your amplifier doesn’t have link output can you just use channel 1 for midrange and channel 2 for powered subwoofer? Trying to run 2 midrange and 1 subwoofer but only have 2 inputs and 2 outputs no link like your amplifier

Hello, Without knowing more about the preamp and amplifier setup, this is theoretically possible. However, unless some active crossover is deployed, it may end up sounding wonky. Just ensure you are not taking a powered/amplified signal into a powered speaker, or you can risk damaging the unit. We recommend contacting the manufacturer of your audio equipment directly to determine the best usage and connection.

I need some help. I have a different issue. I have 2 powered pa speakers, and 2 powered subwoofers. I have the subwoofers hooked up through the powered pa speakers via rca. However there is only there is only one hook up available on the pa speakers. So I basically splitting the power and feel like my powered subwoofers full potential is not being met. How can I remedy that. They still sound great. However at the same time it still feels like there more there is being utilized. Should I get a mixer and if so what do you recommend. Or is there another way hook up the speakers with what I have now? Thanks in advance.

Hi, in your description your are showing the amp powering both the passive speakers and the powered sub? By powering the signal to the active subs is there any danger of damaging the amp built into the active sub? I always thought the active sub would only need a signal source from the mixer directly. And the passive signal would need powered by the amplifier. I’m a little old school, don’t know everything for sure... so old passive guys like me need all the help we can get... thanks for your input! Todd

Hi Todd, We have a better-written explanation in our blog: www.proacousticsusa.com/blog/post/how-to-connect-a-self-powered-subwoofer-to-a-pa-system-with-passive-speakers/ We're taking the audio output from the mixer to the audio input on the amplifier and then out of the amp from the same channel into the powered subwoofer. These inputs on the Crown XLS amplifier pass audio signal only and not power. You then run from the speaker outputs on the power amplifier into the back of your passive PA speakers. These outputs pass both audio signal and power. This setup passes the signal through from the amplifier input to the passive speakers, sending this same audio signal to the powered sub. We could repeat this same process with other powered speakers or even feed the input section of another power amplifier.

The XLR connection suggests you are using an ACTIVE/POWERED speaker. This XLR output is not powered, it is simply a parallel signal to extend to another powered speaker. You would need to insert an amplifier from the XLR output of your ACTIVE speaker to then power the external PASSIVE subwoofer.

What about x-over. The way u showing it: the satellites will be trying to mumble lows, because the signal is not cut below xover lvl for them. explain how to route signal THROUGH active sub and it's internal xover towards passive speakers

Therefore, the system described is for adding powered subwoofers to a full-range speaker system in a pro or commercial context, and not limited-range home audio speakers. You're correct, if using limited frequency response home speakers, you may need to wire to the subwoofer first in that type of configuration.

My power amp doesn't have a link out (Behringer EP2000) doesn't have a "Link Out". The powered subwoofers I want to get have built is crossovers. Can I run my mixer main outs to my subs, then my subs to the power amp then power amp to mains?

Hi there! Great question. If you have an external subwoofer, then you can activate your crossover and have the subs only handle the lows, while the mains handle the mids and highs.

By coming out the link output from the amp, are we sending the signal BEFORE it gets amplified? Like in this case I guess the main out will send the amplified signal to the passive speaker, but the link will send the pre amp stage signal to the active sub which will then amplify it with its own internal amp. Am I correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, you are correct. Link out takes an un-amplified signal, as shown, and allows for connection to another amplifier or a powered speaker (in this example - a powered subwoofer).

Hi Steven, Yes, it makes a difference if you connect a subwoofer directly to the mixer. Unless the mixer has a specific "subwoofer output" that would be equalized and/or set up with a high-cut filter, the tone and performance of the sub will be affected.

No, you should not connect a powered subwoofer directly to a passive speaker that is connected to an amplifier. Powered subwoofers have their own built-in amplifiers and should be connected separately from the passive speakers.

Don’t forget that some subs will come with hi amp inputs. Connect directly from your amp and then into your speakers.

Hi Marc, This will depend on the speakers' High Pass and Low Pass settings. If you send the full audio signal through to the main speakers then yes they will still get the low signal in addition to the subwoofers. I hope this helps!

Hi Johnny, We would recommend any of their matching subs. So either the PRX818S, SRX818SP, or VRX918SP, depending on which series of speakers you are using. Typically it's best to stay within the same series for your speakers and subwoofer when you can. For most applications the PRX is best value, IMO. SRX is quite a bit more money for a sound difference that can only be noticed by a very discerning ear. VRX is likely overkill unless you’ve consistently got audiences over 500 people.

To connect an active subwoofer with passive speakers, you will need an amplifier. Although the active subwoofer has an internal amplifier to power the sub, unfortunately, you can not use that amplifier to power your passive speakers.
