Thanks...lots of good info. I want to connect my passive sub with +/- wire inputs to my AV receiver that's expecting that single pre sub in. Do I absolutely require a separate amp in the middle? It sounded like you briefly touched on that by connecting the sub to your front speakers [?] or something like that. I've read a few examples but they don't seem to finish off the how to. Great video..i got a Klipsch Cinema 600 soundbar, wich has a sub out...if i wanted to hook up a powered sub to it, when i change the volume of the soundbar..the volume of the sub wont go up or down right?

Randy, another option to the 'inline' capacitor high pass filter is to put a higher power resistor in parallel with the capacitor. This will be kinder to your amplifier at low frequencies. For example if your speaker is 8 ohms, and you want 50% less bass, you will put an 8 ohm 50 watt resistor in parallel with the capacitor you're using.

What edifiers do you have in your office? Also what model is the sealed 10in sub you have? Been looking all over for cheaper sealed sub options

Hi Cheapaudioman, first thanks for your videos they are great! 1) For adding subwoofer on open baffle, one on each channel (L & R total 2) or single one place on centre, will it make a significant different? 2) My pre amp have a tape rca out, power amp only have speaker out, use pre amp tape out or power amp speaker out to subwoofer amp will be better? 3) If I use the high level out from subwoofer to main speakers, will it change the sound fr my power amp? 4) How about connect an active crossover fr pre amp tape out > another power amp > subwoofer drivers? thanks. 🙏

Thank you for this video. I had a question though. I have an old JBL SB400 soundbar with subwoofer. The Soundbar is no longer working but the subwoofer is good. How can I repurpose it? It is a wireless subwoofer so it doesnt have any ports in the back. Is it possible to connect it to my PC so i can use it as a sub for the PC. I already have 2 M-audio desktop speakers connected to the PC.

Hey! I'm having a lot of problems figuring out AMPLIFYING my studio monitors! They are all passive but I can find an amplifier for required specs! What can I do? There are some out there but they are like 500 dollars but it doesn't sound right? I just want to power them a couple hundred watts? It says it can handle 140 watts 8 ohm per speaker. 75 rms! Any thoughts because I see your speakers in the background there! 😋 Do I make my own or what?

Depending on whether you wire them in series, or parallel, coils and capacitors can be used for both high pass, and low pass filters.

If running audysey, what should I set the volume on kind on the suv to before starting the auto setup? Half way? All the way up? Quarter of the way?

I need some help though, I've got a subwoofer with only the red and black RCA inputs and a receiver that only has 1 red and 1 black output they are occupied by the left and right speakers I have hooked up I tried connecting an LFE cable to one of the right RCA outputs on the receiver but got nothing then tried the left and got nothing? so I'm a little confused and there's no LFE output on the receiver only left and right for the speaker outputs any suggestions? maybe an adapter? or some sort.. Good video! A couple of points: 1. Line level is the unamplified preamp level. Use RCA jacks or balanced connections, if you have them on your equipment. 2. You can use a y-connector on your preamp output if you have powered speakers. Run one leg to the main and one to the line input on the sub. It won't provide high pass filtration to the powered speaker, but you can definitely run a sub. 3. Some audio guys like using the speaker level (powered signal) even better than the preamp level signal They claim it helps match the sound signature better. 4. Many people use a sub as an add on to the main speaker when it is for music. In that case. No hp filter on the mains. 5. If you wire in a capacitor to block hi frequencies on the mains, try to use a decent one. Electrolytic types do have bad toleancing and the tend to store the energy longer and smear details a bit. If using 100 speakers, don't sweat it.

#2 is a no-go, unless just for fun. Or at least the volume won't be the same for Right and Left. #4 that is not true, most stand mounts will benefit from a high pass filter, and let the sub exclusively play the very low end. :)

@@jungtarcph I respectfully disagree with your statement. 2. Is fine. A powered sub and then powered speakers. Each with volume control. Then left and right channels, each with a y jack. Or, just run preouts to the sub/s and high pass from subs to powered satellites. 4. This is done all of the time. I personally like a high pass filter to the bookshelf, but it is not always necessary. If they do a great 50 hz, you may just add the sub at the bottom. There are lots ways, but, none of mine were "wrong".

@@wvrnstng Yes you can definitely do that. Depending on the output levels in the PC, the signal may be a bit weak. May not produce 2V at all four of the RCA outputs. Hook it up and check the levels. Is it loud enough? Is the base response punchy enough? The preamp signal is very important for dynamic capability. If it is lacking, get a simple preamp, (there are many) and run the 3.5 jack/RCA adapter into it. Then split the output of the preamp into the active speakers/subs.

Hi Randy. I purchased a Fosi BT20A amp and Sony SSCS5 speakers based on your reviews. This $200 dollar system sounds much better than my $500 Sonos Five. I am going to add the Sony Core sub-woofer SA-CS9 with an in-line bass blocker. The SSCS5 speakers go down to 53 Hz. Question: 1) Can you recommend what size first order high pass filter should I buy for this system? 2) Where can I purchase high pass filter online?

I have a Pioneer SA-6500ii and a Polk PSW505 sub. Am I limited to speaker inputs or can I add DSP or something better for getting cleaner sub level input?

I have been doodling ideas about how to connect my TDK S60 Subwoofer into my Panasonic SC-PM45 shelf stereo system to work with my Sherwood DSS250e speakers that I purchased new December of 1988. Replicating the circuit to accept speaker level inputs and using a capacitor for high pass cut-off sounds possible, maybe a sniffer circuit to pick off the signal and reproduce a line level output to head off to the subwoofer... although the Sony subwoofer that you talked about might be a good idea... I have some old National black and white television equipment looking for a home... you don't want that do you? Just thought you might be into that ... I am in Melbourne, there are direct flights to Dallas...could just put them in stowage if you had some contacts in the airlines...

P.S. To be clear, I mean "nerd" as a compliment. Like, someone who's deeply specialized in some topic.(Didn't want to seem insulting.)

I am still running my Hsu subs. They aren't the fanciest. They aren't the most expensive; they aren't the cheapest. But they have been making me happy for a long time now.

I used to set up subwoofers and used a capacitor as a hi pass filter at the amp’s inputs instead of the speaker inputs. This meant the input impedance was higher and more linear than a speaker’s and eliminates low frequencies from reaching the amplifiers. As an amplifier’s impedance is 10k or higher a much smaller and higher quality capacitor can be used and a speaker’s input impedance is anything but linear. I’ll have to look up my equation for determining the amp’s -3 db point as my memory is vague. Think it’s 1/2pi f c. Polarity change doesn’t need a switch, just reverse the speaker wires.

@cheapaudioman - So, I have a Yamaha CR600 (nearly identical to your CR-800) and I want to add a subwoofer. Is the easiest/best way to do it by just running the speaker output wires from the receiver into the line in on the back of the sub, and the line out wires from the sub to the speakers? I'm considering the Monoprice 12" sub.

I believe I’ve reached musical nirvana 😆 (for now anyway). Also I was wondering do you advise not powering off my vintage receiver Technics SA-202 ( and my Yamaha a/v receiver) or do you recommend turning them off. I just purchased a subwoofer for my near-field listening setup in my office. My integrated amp has a SW out port, but because it is not an AVR it has no internal crossover function that controls the frequency ranges being send to the main speakers and the subs. Some other YT video I watched said that using the LFE input on the sub bypasses the crossover in the sub. Which I think means the sub is now playing all signals below 150 hz. That is too high and the location of the sub is too evident, but it seems I am unable to use the crossover setting on the sub to drop it down to 60 hz or 80 hz. What input port on the sub should I use? Please advise.

Either your integrated amp should have functionality to send only LFE signals out you just haven't discovered or you can plug the RCA into the analog inputs on sub to use crossover. Usually, LFE inputs on subs are expecting only low frequencies thus have no need to use low pass filters.

I have the definitive 9080x for fronts and matching cs 9080 center channel but I can't get the sub to kick in like before I have the sr-6014 marantz did I screw up the settings for the fronts to work right ?? Thanks 😊

You don't have to have a sub out on powered speakers. I ran into that issue with the elac navis. What you can do is if you have a separate pre amp and dac or if it's integrated you connected the pre-amp out connection to the subwoofer's in rca left/right channel and then you connect the powered speakers to the subs rca out. So it goes speakers > subwoofer > preamp > Dac > source (pc ,cd player etc)

You all need to try HSU subwoofers. I have 2. They blend in so smoothly! They make my movies sound incredible. My little Revel center channel sounds like a huge wall of sound. I don’t know how they do it. I’ve got Revel and Definative technology subs and they don’t even come close!

Cheapaudioman- any recommendations for how to connect a 4 Ohm Passive Subwoofer to a 6 Ohm Active Subwoofer Sony SACS9? SACS9 will be connected to the sub out of my Denon AVR. I don't know if connecting the 4 Ohm passive to the speaker terminals on the SACS9 will cause an issue or not. In the end, my goal is to have 2 subwoofers going at the same time.. Thanks!

I have a Bose TV Speaker with a Bass output connector (3.5 mm mic). Bose offers expensive Bass Modules for that port. I have an active subwoofer (different brand) with integral amplifier. I've connected to its "Line in" RCA connectors, but no sound. Is there something proprietary inside the Bose product that only allows their bass modules?

Roger. Good question. It does not. The only crossover is the low pass filter going to the subwoofer itself. I would be great if that were the case. There is a company that does provide a high pass in addition to the ubiquitous low pass filter on most, if not all, powered subs and that is Emotiva. However, the highpass filter only works with RCA's coming out of the subwoofer and not the speaker level outs.

How to orientate condensor's +and- side in relation to amp-sub,?? Also, I have a Peavey 300watts combo bass amp with 18 inch driver. Any way of using that as a sub???

I don’t think so. I’d just use the speaker level inputs and you’ll be good to go. Just run your “a” speaker lines to the speaker level inputs and then back to your speakers.

If the room is big maybe you need two. I’ve never been much on two subwoofers unless it’s just an enormous room. Depends on your budget and what you want to spend. Emotiva has a couple good subs that make good power at a fair price. You can’t go wrong with SVS either. Otherwise look to a Klipsch or Polk on sale. Subs aren’t nearly as important as your speakers and you got it right with the 600m’s

@@cheapaudioman Speaking of the 600m's, have you seen this: www.gr-research.com/store/p56/Klipsch_RP-600M_Upgrade.html ? He sells kits for upgrading 600m's, among other speaker brands. Worth it? Over kill? I've always had main stream audio equipment and I'm sure he would qualify them, just like the 600m's, junk...mass produced junk. But to my untrained ears some of this "junk" sounds good to me. My father had....close your ears, I'm gonna swear here...Bose 901's, series 5 I think and I thought they sounded incredible, in my young, novice ears the 901's were the pinnacle of sound. I'm sure this guy would consider them junk as well. None the less, I'm use to "mass produced junk" and even think some of them sound stellar...not too mention don't have deep pockets or the ears to notice the difference for the "high-end" stuff. I'd argue that the "mass produced junk" has more quality assurance measures in place than the small run "audiophile" equipment. Bose is cool. When people crap on bose they need to realize that the only reason why people get into high end audio is because companies like bose paved the way for them. Bose literally made multiple speaker setups (5.1) mainstream and introduced the public to subwoofers. I had a set of bose accoustimass speakers and I thought they were awesome. Still have them. Don't use them but I have them. To your point about improving upon stock speakers there are things that can be done with the crossovers and bracing etc that will make them better. The 600m's are pretty outstanding already. That's something you can do for sure if you're so inclined. I think the $500-600 speakers today are way better than they were 10 years ago. It's always cool to have an upgrade path though with your speakers if you want.

Interesting story: I purchased a Klipsch R-12SWi on Amazon and it was basically DOA. I called and went back and forth with them about connections and this and that to troubleshoot the issue. In the end they refunded me the money and said do with the speaker as you see fit. I guess it was too expensive to send back. So, without anything to lose, I took the sucker apart and soon found that the positive wire leading to the driver had a failed solder connection. I soldered the connection back and it now works like a charm. I feel slightly guilty but oh well... such is life. It sounds good I guess but I have nothing really to reference it to. I am running all Klipsch and being the noob I am went with the sub as well. Though SVS is staring at me. If I was to change anything now it would probably be the Receiver. I am running an Onkyo TX-NR 636.

You can connect the active sub that has a speaker level input with speaker wires from the amp to the sub and then run speaker wires from the sub to your speakers

Great channel! I just found you last week. You mentioned that you have a sealed sub that you love, but you didn't mention the model. What is the model of sealed sub you were referring to?

It’s a sonance of all things. Never really heard them before. Got it on sale for $350

If a powered sub has a bypass feature, is it okey to leave the sub on? I'm using the SONY SA-WM40 POWERED ACTIVE SUBWOOFER.

What about if your subwoofer that only have pre out and you trying to connect to integrated amplifier that don't have pre out

Ive been on the internet for hours trying to convince myself i didn't make a mistake in purchase, is it possible to connect a Klipsch R-120SW to a fosi audio BT30D Pro ? the sub only has rca out (something i didnt notice because of the 58% off sale) my fosi amp only has speaker wire connectors, do i need to buy a new amp or a different sub, or is there some way i can connect my amp to my sub? im finding conflicting information on rca to speaker wire cords all over.

For powered speakers you could use a mini dsp to create a Filter and use one of the outputs as a sub preout

@@Kelembor If you are using powered speakers, you must be running a set of RCA jacks from your receiver or preamp, correct? If so, buy a couple of RCA Y-jacks. Single male-2 female. Then plug the RCA jacks you currently use to one of the female jacks, per channel. Then connect the other 2 left over female jacks, (1) per channel, to your sub.

Actually it's even easier than my above scenario. If the sub has preamp in and preamp out, which most do, you can just use those connections. But you could have lots of long lines running if your sub is off to one corner.

Not if the DAC is IN the set of speakers already. Buying an external DAC seems to defeat the purpose of simplicity. There are powered studio monitors or powered multimedia speakers.

I always hear that having 2 subwoofers is better than 1. I've heard this for many years and also in at least 6 different videos on youtube. When adding a second one is it ok to use a different model/size as the second subwoofer or do they need to be the same to sound good?

any size would be fine. just use the level controls to balance them out.

You mentioned high level inputs can be used to hook up a sub. But what if the integrated amp had only a pair of binding posts? Is it feasible?

Yes. Just run the speaker lines out of the amp to the sub and then the speaker lines to the speakers.
