ARC and eARC Explained - An Awesome Feature That You're Probably Not Using (HDMI CEC)

Ғылым және технология

A quick video explaining ARC, eARC, and HDMI CEC and how to use them. If you want to stop using so many remotes or you don't want to use a universal remote, ARC may be what you're looking for. It's also often the best way to send sound to your soundbar or home theater receiver.

    If your television doesn't support eARC, and you have an external device providing a Dolby Atmos AV signal, then couldn't you run that signal into your AVR via a HDMI cable, and allow it to act like a splitter by taking the audio portion of the signal, processing it, and then outputting the Dolby Atmos signal to the speakers, while allowing the video portion of the signal to pass on through and out to the television??? Also, I thought ARC could allow one to receive Dolby Atmos audio from streaming services that use the format, which includes Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, because those services embed Dolby Atmos in a Dolby Digital Plus stream, which ARC can handle.

    eARC has been a lifesaver. Only one remote needed like he said and with CEC enabled you control volume and power off/on. I've been swapping out remotes every few years when adding things like a Roku or new game console. Universal remotes used to be a must but not anymore. A good modern smart TV with eARC combined with a modern soundbar or Home Theater AVR eARC and all is fine. The only problem that still remains is getting certain codecs like Atmos, DTS or DTS-HD to pass from the TV to the sound device. I read that many TV manufactures now like LG no longer do DTS or DTS-HD and just pass the signal as PCM 5.1. Still sounds good but very confusing.

The main purpose for Audio Return Channel is the get audio from native display or device apps to "return" to your external audio source (A/V receiver, soundbar, etc.). In my case, all devices plug into my receiver and then video out to the TV (no eARC needed) except for my PS5. That goes direct to the TV to utilize HDMI 2.1 features like VRR. Meanwhile the sony bdv e2100 almost a soundbar with separated 5.1speaker lost sound in sorround speaker dolby digtal plus and atmos, inspite to be HDMI ARC build in, also it is not wide dinamic audio range capable, the sound is flat via PCM. So I disided to stay with the pioneer vsx rs320 becausa even has better effects movies sound than the sony bdv-e2100, I thinks the optical audio is capable in audio only needs good hardware to reproduce sounds, I still didn´t test earc so far. At the time I bought the pioneer vsx rs320 all receivers had only optical and coaxial audio and analagus either 5.1 or 7.1 and stated to be dolby digital plus bulid in. Hi Chris, amazing video. I wanted to share that while your approach for the Xbox series X and soundbar is correct for the HDMI connections there are some soundbars/TVs that are not compatible together and will cause a sound delay on the Xbox when trying to use Dolby Atmos. I experienced this when I bought a Samsung soundbar for my LG cx and Xbox series x. My tv would not let me use the audio Passthrough setting with the Samsung. I then returned the Samsung and bought an LG soundbar and now I can use the Passthrough setting and Dolby Atmos has no delay on my Xbox series x. Might be worth making a separate video for but people are having major problems with this.

    eARC is part of HDMI 2.1 standard, and HDMI 2.1 supports 4K@120hz (and also 8K@60hz). So if your TV and sound bar supports eARC and have ports marked "eARC" *you know* it supports 4K@120hz just fine. The only thing you have to make sure is to have a proper HDMI 2.1 cable plugged in your TV (eARC audio can run fine on just an HDMI 1.4 cable).

    ARC/EARC is a great concept with the exception that alot of people experience random audio dropouts. I have an Xbox Series X connected directly to a Samsung Q90T and use the EARC from the TV to my Denon EARC equipped receiver. I'm using Zeskit hdmi2.1 cables but I will randomly get audio dropouts here and there. They only last for a second when it happens but it's irritating

  • @Revolutionized

    @Revolutionized

    It is not the cable you used and not even the Xbox, it is common with other manufacturers as well. What creates the audio dropouts is your TV itself when it is sending audio out from the ARC port (absolutely nothing you can do).

    They COULD have made HDMI a superfast bidirectional audio and video pipeline from the start. But, it was originally more about copyright protection than usability and features. They keep rolling out features a little at a time to keep you buying new stuff. It's always been that way. HDMI was supposed to replace ALL the other connections, be SMART and simplify things.

    ARC has one downside: its audio is limited to 5.1. So if your gear is not the new and more capable eARC, you kinda have to choose between great audio from your smart TV vs the great control functionality of CEC. Of course, if all your program sources are external to the TV this is not an issue…. but given the awesome capabilities of the new smart TVs, were I configuring a new system today I’d ensure that both the TV and the AVR were eARC.

    Yeah my current TV doesn't have eARC only ARC. Which is why I could never stream Dolby Atmos through it to my processor. Didn't realize it until recently. But I'm upgrading my TV soon. So that will solve that issue.

    What I have notice is image degradation when doing passthrough, I notice it when I had my ps4 and BP. If I plug them directly to my tv the image is a lot crisp and bright. I don't know if its common or just isolated.

    Although not stated in the video, you have found the main reason for ARC. That is that people upgrade their TV more frequently than sound system, resulting in a sound system HDMI bandwidth lower limit than the TV's.

    Very happy and thankful for your clear information, Chris. I bought a 2022 55" Samsung crystal Clear UHD TV in a sale. Later I discovered that the TV didn't support Dolby Atmos. I was already dissapointed and searching for a solution. Good to hear that you can place the soundbar before the TV: meaning that your Streaming service-signal first goes through the Soundbar and then to your TV instead of the other way around. So you don't lose the Dolby Atmos signal which the soundbar supports but the TV doesn't. This probably works because of the eARC-HDMI-ports on both Soundbar and TV. Soundbar only has to put through the visual to the TV and the Surround sound signal is already in the soundbar. Sounds plausible 😎 I only have to buy a good soundbar (with eARC and Dolby Atmos) now. Plus a few Ultra High speed cables for my other devices. Minding that I need a soundbar with a few extra HDMI-ports. Thanks!!!
