    Do you recommend one of them specifically for cleaning the retainer after it was in the case for a couple of years? Haven’t used it in a while.

    that works well with spring retainers (hawely retainers) too ?! one more thing can we use the bathroom bathing soap (the one you use to wash your hands)

    What do you think of ultrasonic cleaners for daily use of hawley retainers? I’m thinking of using the iSonic solution with it too. I know it’s costly but I have to make cleaning easier so I’ll actually wear my retainers again.

    Sorry for the delay! Life got a bit hectic! I do like ultrasonic cleaners and recently there have been more that have been less expensive/easier to get to use at home. If you are looking for easier ways, yes the ultrasonic will help and you could always use the cleaning tablets 'Retainer Brite'.

    Thank u so much doc! U explained it crystal clear...Needed this, as I wanted to do a deep clean! I'm just having a query like the denture has to be placed in water when not in use or it would cause warpage right I just use retainer at night so I'll keep them in case filled with clean distilled water when not in use and make a new one every time?

    I would always follow what your orthodontist says but we have found that toothpaste actually scratches the material (if it is a clear retainer), making it foggy and hold on to bacteria. The more traditional wire/acrylic retainers it probably would be aok on. Hope that helps!

    So if you don't recommend using the leftover toothpaste from brushing, are you just supposed to take the retainer out in the morning and just let it sit the whole day? It sounds like that would just keep it nasty and build up would occur even if you do the 1x/2x a week clean with your options.

  • @ramboorthodontics1827

    @ramboorthodontics1827

    Sorry for the very delayed response - life got a bit hectic! In the morning, it is important to rinse thoroughly with water to get the saliva off of it. If you do that and do a 'deep clean' 1-2x/week, I have not seen build up occur and it stays clean. We don't like toothpaste because it leaves tiny scratches which then cause MORE bacteria/buildup getting stuck in it and long-term it becomes worse.

    @@ramboorthodontics1827No worries, I actually found a nice solution to cleaning my retainer. I can't remember if it was in this video, but I have been using a little drop of antibacterial hand soap on a separate toothbrush to clean and then rinse with water after giving it a good scrub all around. On the weekend, I put it in a concoction, consisting of water and vinegar, to let it soak for 30 mins and get some proteins that may be on it. After the 30 mins, I do another scrub with soap and rinse. It's kept my retainer looking spotless and clean for over a year.

  • @ramboorthodontics1827

    @ramboorthodontics1827

    Sorry for the late response....Make sure to do regular cleaning. That's the #1 way to keep them the cleanest. If the tartar build up is still on there or from a long time of lack of cleaning, you may have to use a stronger solution of vingear and then try brushing it afterwards (gently..don't crack it!) or one of the retainer tablets "Retainer Brite" and brush afterwards as well. I hope that helps!

    I got my braces off in the beginning of December. I wear them over 23 hours a day and take them off just to eat and brush and wear them again. I wear them so much I’m still not used to how my teeth look without them and how my bite feels without them. I know for a fact that if I miss a few days my teeth are gonna move so fast. I hope I could just wear them at night after 2 years

    Karma, first off - Congratulations!! I'm glad to hear you are wearing your retainers. Every person's retainer needs are different and your orthodontist knows what's best for you! While in the beginning it can feel different to be brace free (you've been used to the braces for a bit!), over time you'll feel more comfortable showing off that smile. And, yes, at some point you'll be able to wear them just at night to maintain the smile you worked hard to achieve! Congrats again!

    Your advice conflicts somewhat with other orthodontists on youtube: One said that white vinegar should be used full strength, and another said that hydrogen peroxide should not be used because, over time, it will stiffen the plastic and make it less flexible. Another said that generic Polident is her favorite cleaning method. Why is there so much disagreement?

    There might be some general disagreement as every orthodontist has found different ways to achieve the same results. There is a general agreement on things with slight tweaks that we each have found to work best for us. I like diluted vinegar as with regular cleaning, it does just as well as full strength. Hydrogen peroxide I suggest for when you have a cold/sore throat and more want to disinfect it. And I the tablets do a great job but have a lot of chemicals in them that I wanted to suggest other solutions that are both easy and way less expensive! Whatever you find works for you and keeps your retainer clean and working properly so you can keep on wearing it - I'm happy!

    @@vlcthefish I'm surprised by that but have heard that a few times. I have found that toothpaste makes the retainer look cloudier over time (places small scratches in it which are harder to clean out) so I don't recommend it.

    Hi John, Sorry for the late response but toothpaste can be one of the WORST things to clean your retainer with! It causes small scratches in the plastic which can then lead to a build up of bacteria and not only make it harder to clean but also make it cloudy-looking too!

    Look up a "toothpaste abrasiveness chart" Baking soda is among the least abrasive substances. While most toothpastes are very abrasive in comparison, due to the push to have "white" teeth. I stopped using toothpastes that were so abrasive because I was losing some enamel in some areas of my teeth, making them sensitive. I paid the price for being "too clean" abrasiveness chart: www.williamsonperio.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Toothpaste-Abrasiveness-Ranked-by-RDA.pdf
