When I am cleaning print heads I use a handheld 100x magnification microscope and I check the nozzles throughout the process. I do use cotton swabs for some areas (around the ink ports on the other side of the nozzles), but definitely not on the nozzles and if I did, I would dab, not wipe. Cotton swabs leave behind to many fibers and the wiping action forces some of those fibers into the nozzles. Any remnants of ink can adhere to the fibers and facilitate a clog. Running some ink through with a nozzle check can rinse those fibers out, but if some nozzles remain clogged or partially clogged that can unnecessarily complicate the cleaning process. Disposable alcohol wipes work much better to blot or wipe the nozzles throughout the process. Some techs prefer the little wipes normally used to prep skin prior to an injection, others like myself prefer the larger wipes that come in a pop up container similar to baby wipes. Inspecting the nozzles with my microscope after using the alcohol wipes show a fiber/lint free surface virtually free of debris.

Thanks so much! I recently fired "new printers" due the nightmare of the chipped ink cartridges and purchased an old Canon S400 (no chips on the carts). The "tubes" leading to the printhead were fully clogged with dry black ink. I was able to pick it out then flush them using materials at home after watching this. Works like new now!

Worked great for me on my IPF8300, and then printed perfectly. I did have to reset the head (with resetter I bought on ebay) and it did purge a bunch of ink, but saved me the cost of a head.

what about the chip-set in the printer-head ? isn't it something that has to be dealt with? I thought they had an expiring date or usage count down of some kink...?

problems with generic pf-06 head does not recognize it my canon ta-20, help please

When you start rubbing the q-tip against the nozzle array you are accidentally damaging their tips. Each nozzle has tiny with a small micron size tip on the array surface. Anyways, after injecting the cleaner into each ink reservoir, follow up by injecting air to get rid of the cleaner in the reservoir rather than trying to vacuum it out. You cannot get rid of every trace this way. Then follow up this step by injecting distilled water into the reservoir until any trace of the cleaner residue inside the reservoir tank and/or around the nozzle is completely gone. The final step is injecting air to get rid of any trace of water. You can use hair drier in no heat to blow dry, and then let the print head sit in a warm place in a box nozzle array facing down for about a week. This has been my recipe for a long time, and it works. I use good old windex as my cleaner, much cheaper and safer than the chemicals out there.

hi marrutt, I have an IPF 750 and it worked just fine untill some time before it requested to replace the printhead. In lower resolutions (600 dpi normal and under) it started to do lines across the paper where it did not print, i did all the auto-cleanings (nozzles, head...), because the printhead was 5 or 6 years old i thought it was just reaching its limit, and months later it requested to replace it, wich i did, but the problem remains, it's not that i can't print, but only in higher resolutios, and for architectural plans the 600 dpi normal used to be my top resolution used only in finer drawings. Is this something that magic bullet can fix (the printhead is brand new) and what's your thoughts on how to proceed. Thanks in advance and sorry for any bad english.

E161-4050, what to do? I did a head cleaning and the printer stopped after that, then I tried your procedure, but then I got the E161-4050 error.. My IPF750 start to fill the tanks and at end it show that error and the message tell to call the support.

I've seen print head reset machines sold for ~$100, with the cost of the cleaning material and the reset device you'll not be out much more than the replacement head on amazon, but hopefully the heads will last much longer

Cleaning these printheads almost never works. Buy a new printhead and make sure your capping station absorber pads are clean and correctly seated.
