Can You Reuse Canon Printer Maintenance Carts?

Can You Reuse Canon Printer Maintenance Carts?
If only it was possible. But the sad fact is that the CANON IPF PRO-1000 and higher Maintenance Carts cannot be refurbished like the ones for earlier CANON Photo Printers.
They've made it impossible as they are a single sea, less container with only one entry point for the Waste Ink to Enter.
Besides there there is no way to reset the chips nor enter service mode unless you are a service tech with access to the repair server.
There are single use chips you can buy which are useless for the reasons given. You can not open the carts! And besides a new cart cost less than a chip.

I have a canon imageprograf TA 20. For some reason it will not pass the “Printer Setup” and it appears to be causing the ink to back into the maintenance cartridge. It was giving an error code ec3f-2f4o (1492). Now it is saying to change the maintenance cartridge. Any advice? Printer is only 2 years old.

Goon on you mate. Agree with everything you said about hating to throw stuff into landfill. I found your channel after just finding a Canon ipf780 at the dump today. I thought I'd bring it home and start making a video of me trying to get it working. Turns out it's missing the maintenance cartridge and all the ink cartridges. Hence how I found myself on your channel. Not sure it's worth risking buying these things to see if I can get it going. I thought maybe trying to find a used cartridge and seeing if I could reuse it. Anyway we'll see. Thanks again bud keep up the great work 👍

That model and the 2000-4000-6000 are printers that you need to keep pretty much pro ring daily in order to not create so much waste ink is proportion to ink actually used for printing photos. I will do a video and discuss this during my life stream to fight at 6pm Easter USA time. If you do not follow certain usage practices you may end up generating 1-2 times more.waste ink than laid on paper.

It would be like trying to suck out the "Wetness" out of a baby diaper. A few folks have tried it and it was a mess. There are chip resetters but there is no convenient way to repack the insides as the cart us a unibody construction. I agree about the disposal problem. The only choice we have is a $22 replacement. If you could locate the area of the cart that would become the most saturated and somehow drill just the right diameter hole where one could aspirate at least 250ml of ink and then re plug it and reset the chip...that might somehow work. But most will simply just replace it with a new one. I have 4 of the in a bag that I refuse to trash. When it gets out of hand I will not have much of a choice.

I read the 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' cartridge recycling web site and it says waste hoppers/ containers are accepted in the recycling bins as well as carts and toner bottles. I don't know if you have this program in Trumpland. The program is paid for by the printer companies, including Canon. The recycling bins are at all of the 6 big companies stores that sell printers and also the post offices. They recycle millions of carts every year. Sad your'e not wearing one of your lovely t-shirts 😭

I see too many "LOTS" of hundreds of EPSON and CANON carts for most Home type AIO type printers on EBAY. SO I think EBAYERS buy then huge lots from say Office Depot and then separate them and pawn them off on EBAY! I would rather like to see them be refurbished, refillied and resold.

This is my concern, the cost is much higher than 14 dollars for any third party to replicate it adding the chip of course, most of the time on canon's website it is on a back order, and I think the reason for that they are taking a loss to make it at this price. so once those dumped units on the market are not available any more from Adorama or other venues then we will run the risk of having it at a much higher price by a third party, I guess it will be in the 60 dollar range if they will make one to the specs of the original. Who knows, they may get greedy and crank up the price to 100$+ knowing fully you cannot operate the printer without it ...ridiculous.

It is now 2021. I have been watching Jose’s videos before I purchased the PIXMA PRO-100 around 2017. After I got all the discounts, I paid around $80 for that baby. I knew it was all about the ink. That is where Canon got its “money”. I soon found out that the PRO-100 did not have a maintenance cartridge or tray that could be replaced. Jose gave me lots of great ways to minimize ink waste. My PRO-100 is still working, but I can see that waste ink try, that cannot be replaced, and it is almost ready to overflow. PRO-100 and 200 are, really, just throw-away printers. Shame on Canon. I would like to reduce all the garbage I dispose of and save the planet, but unfortunately, I cannot do it alone. Indeed, all of us working to reuse cartridges reuse ink waist trays, keep our printers running as long as we can, we that recycle, all of the billions of us cannot do it. We need the corporations, industries, and manufacturers of stuff to stop putting the “garbage problem” on us. They need to be pro-active. Why can’t I send all the ink cartridges back to Canon, free even. Why can’t make reasonably cost printers that last many decades and when they finally do breakdown take them back.

Im relatively new to the PRO-1000 and just got a maintenance cartridge full notice. And I have all kinds of print jobs and orders I need to ship out and my printer is now not functioning. No problem just go online and order one and get it shipped overnight right? Nope. Nobody has stock ANYWHERE. Not even Canon. Could be weeks until they are available. I wish I had some warning about this cartridge getting full as I would have ordered some replacements months ago. Now I have an inoperable printer. My only possible solution right now is to order ANOTHER PRO-1000 printer for the simple solution to get another functioning printer with the maintenance cartridge in it. Thats a $1300 solution for a $15 problem. I guess it would provide me printing redundancy and I can expense it as a business expense but this is just ridiculous. I cant wait 1-2-3 weeks to ship orders out b/c these MC-20 maintenance cartridges are on backorder on every web site in the world. Jeesh! Im always proactive on things and I have ordered replacement ink well in advanced because I saw the warnings for low ink. But I had no idea about the maintenance cartridge.

I just bought a Pro 1000. I have an iPF 6300 as well. FWIW, the maintenance cartridge of the iPF6300 is reusable - you don't have to disassemble it or remove the ink pads - I found this out by happenstance. The maintenance cartridge on my 6300 was full so I bought a new maintenance cartridge and put the old one in the box the new one came in and just put it in the closet where I had the 6300 set up. Eventually, the "new" cartridge got full and I was going to order a new one. However, I thought WTH, I'm going to try the "old/original" maintenance cartridge and see if that works (when I pulled the old cart out of the box, I noticed it felt a lot lighter). So I placed the old maint. cart in my 6300 and turned it on and voila, the "replace maint. cart" message disappeared and the display showed the maint. cart. as 100%, i.e., empty, so I was back up and running. The reality is ink is a liquid and after time, like just about all liquids exposed to the atmosphere, the ink evaporates. My new Pro 1000 shows the maint. cart. at @ 40% full after just setting it up. I'm planning to buy a new maint. cart. and set the old one aside once it gets full to see if the same condition occurs with it - the ink evaporates. Just my 2 cents.

José, a question since you stated in the video that you kept these cartridges and weighed them. Does it perhaps depend on when you weigh them? If ink is exposed to the air, won’t it evaporate? Is it possible that this evaporation is even happening while the maintenance cartridge is in the printer thereby preventing us from knowing just how much ink is wasted?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    6 жыл бұрын

You have a point on evaporation. I brought that up with Mike from PC and he said he was not entirely sure at what point from the cart to the print Head is there any exposure to air. Possible at the internal ink compartments. But nowhere else. The carts do not use ink bags so the inks are indeed exposed to air in the cart compartment but is it pretty much enclosed. Relative humidity inside is probably close if not 100% so I don't see much change for the liquid base to.evaporate much if not at all. I will check cart weights tonight.
